  • In this study, we investigated the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOC) in the ambient air of a small scale municipal waste landfill site. Seasonal sampling was carried out simultaneously at two sites, i.e. one in the center of the landfill area, and the other at a boundary site. Among 38 target VOC, toluene appeared to be the most dominant compound, followed by benzene. and xylenes. The higher levels of BTX imply that paint -containing materials and/or organic solvents are the most significant sources of the VOC in the landfill environment. Seasonal variations for the samples collected at the landfill site indicated that the VOC concentrations tend to be higher in the spring and fall season and lower in the winter season. In addition, night- time concentrations appeared to be generally higher than day-time. Such daily variation might be due to more stabilized atmosphere during the night-time. Similar patterns were also found in samples collected at a boundary site. This study demonstrated that the municipal landfill, although it is small -scaled, could be an important emission source of atmospheric VOC, particularly in the vicinities of the landfill. Thus, an appropriate control strategy is required to prevent any undesirable secondary pollutions from the environmental sanitary facilities such as landfill.

  • In nuclear-related facilities, such as nuclear power plants, research reactors, accelerators, and nuclear waste storage sites, radiation detection, and mapping are required to prevent radiation overexposure. Sensor network systems consisting of radiation sensor interfaces and wxireless communication units have become promising tools that can be used for data collection of radiation detection that can in turn be used to draw a radiation map. During data collection, malfunctions in some of the sensors can occasionally occur due to radiation effects, physical damage, network defects, sensor loss, or other reasons. This paper proposes a reproduction strategy for radiation maps using a U-net model to compensate for the loss of radiation detection data. To perform machine learning and verification, 1,561 simulations and 417 measured data of a sensor network were performed. The reproduction results show an accuracy of over 90%. The proposed strategy can offer an effective method that can be used to resolve the data loss problem for conventional sensor network systems and will specifically contribute to making initial responses with preserved data and without the high cost of radiation leak accidents at nuclear facilities.

  • It is expected that the temporary storage facilities at the nuclear power plants will be full of the spent fuels within 10 years. Provided that a centralized interim storage facility is constructed along the coast of the Korean peninsula to solve this problem, a substantial amount of spent fuels should be transported by sea or by land every year. In this paper we developed a computer program for the analysis of transportation logistics of the spent fuels from 4 different nuclear power plant sites to the hypothetical centralized interim storage facility and the final repository. Mass balance equations were used to analyze the logistics between the nuclear power plants and the interim storage facility. To this end a computer program, CASK, was developed by using the VISUAL BASIC language. The annual transportation rates of spent fuels from the four nuclear power plant sites were determined by using the CASK program. The parameter study with the program illustrated the easiness of logistics analysis. The program could be used for the cost analysis of the spent fuel transportation as well.

  • Strong alkaline waste water is generated in large quantities due to using Concrete, shotcrete and various compounds in tunnel construction sites. As the release of this alkaline waste water will contaminate the stream water, it has to be neutralized. Currently, this waste water is mainly neutralized by using sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid, but the risks of corrosion and handling of facilities are inherent and the chemical control act requires strict management measures. Therefore, using CO2 (carbon dioxide) as an alternative has been highlighted and various indoor experiment studies have been conducted to prove its potential. However, it is difficult to apply CO2 to the site because it is still completely lacking in field application research and shows different characteristics from indoor experiments. In this study, the actual site applicability is verified through field testing.

  • High rising of the buildings offers a number of risk factors than ever before with regard to fire prevention. Especially in the construction site of high-rise buildings, people waste golden-time during the evacuation because temporary fire fighting facilities are not installed and transferred to a large fire because of fire suppression failure. In this study, the researcher derives the problems of fire protection in high-rise buildings construction sites and proposed the measures in such the legal aspects as fire building construction code and etc. There are the legal improvements such as orders of construction suspension in the problems of fire safety, appointing fire safety manager, temporary fire protection installation standards, enhancing penalty provisions regarding the use of fire, operating self fire brigade, confirming on-site after completing fire-protection facalities, establishment or strengthening special fire-protection investigations.

  • In order to accurately evaluate the distribution and emission characteristics of volatile organic compounds(VOCs) produced in the landfill environment, we conducted a series of field campaign to measure VOC emissions from a total of eight landfill sites located all across the Korean Peninsula. During the field measurements made from Sept. 2000 to Dec. 2004, we investigated VOC emission characteristics from 1 large scale, 5 mid scale, and 2 small scale landfill sites. The results from our 4-years study is used to provide valuable information for the management of landfill facilities in Korea. If annual emission rates of VOC are compared in terms of toluene, the magnitude of its emission differed between the closed and active landfills. Whereas closed landfills show emission rates from a few tens to 500g/yr, those of active ones were recorded as 1,000 to 40,000g/yr.

  • Biogasification is a technology that produces environmentally friendly fuel using methane gas generated in the process of stably decomposing and processing organic waste. Biogasification is the most used method for energy conversion of organic waste with high moisture content, and is a useful method for organic waste treatment following the prohibition of direct landfill (2005) and marine dumping (2013). Due to African Swine Fever (ASF), which recently occurred in Korea, recycling of wet feed is prohibited, and consumers such as dry feed and compost are negatively recognized, making it difficult to treat food waste. Accordingly, biogasification is attracting more attention for the treatment and recycling of food waste. Korea's energy consumption amounted to 268.41 106toe, ranking 9th in the world. However, it is an energy-poor country that depends on foreign imports for about 95.8% of its energy supply. Therefore, in Korea, the Renewable Energy Portfolio Standard (RPS) is being introduced. The domestic RPS system sets the weight of the new and renewable energy certificate (REC, Renewable energy certificate) of waste energy lower than that of other renewable energy. Therefore, an additional incentive system is required for the activation of waste-to-energy. In this study, the operation of an anaerobic digester that treats food waste, food waste Leachate and various organic wastes was confirmed. It was intended to be used as basic data for preparing the waste-to-energy incentive system through precise monitoring for a certain period of time. Four sites that produce biogas from organic waste and use them for power generation and heavy gas were selected as target facilities, and field surveys and sampling were conducted. Basic properties analysis was performed on the influent sample of organic waste and the effluent sample according to the treatment process. As a result of the analysis of the properties, the total solids of the digester influent was an average of 12.11%, and the volatile solids of the total solids were confirmed to be 85.86%. BOD and CODcr removal rates were 60.8% and 64.8%. The volatile fatty acids in the influent averaged 55,716 mg/L. It can be confirmed that most of the volatile fatty acids were decomposed and removed with an average reduction rate of 92.3% after anaerobic digestion.

  • Among various environmental issues, those for worn-out products are increasingly important due to rapid development and improvement of products, shortages of dumping sites and waste-incineration facilities, and legislation pressures and customer recognitions to protect the environment. Under such circumstances, collection and product recovery activities give rise to additional material flows from customers back to collectors and reprocessors. Reverse logistics, the opposite direction of the conventional forward logistics, is concerned with the management of this material flow. In this paper, we consider the emerging concept of reverse logistics. First, the concept of sustainable development is explained to explain the philosophical background of various environmental issues. Second, we explain the basics of reverse logistics, which includes the overall structure and the classification of network types. Finally, we review the previous research articles, especially in the aspect of industrial engineering, after classifying the decision problems into : (a) product recovery strategy; (b) network design and operation; (c) inventory management; (d) disassembly problems; and (e) remanufacturing problems.
