  • From the point of view of safety of life and property at sea and the protection of the marine environment, the Vessel Traffic Management System along the Korea coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But the establishing priority per area must be evaluated under the restricted budget. In this case, the estimated traffic flow has a major effect on priority evaluation. In the former paper , an algorithm was proposed for estimating the trip distribution between each pair of zones such as harbours and straits. This paper aims to formulate a simulation model for estimating the dynamic traffic flow per area in the Korea coastal waterway. The model consists of the algorithm constrined by the statistical movement of ships and the observed data, the regression analysis and the traffic network evaluations. The processed results of traffic flow except fishing vessel are summarized as follows ; 1) In 2000, the traffic congestions per area are estimated, in proportion of ship's number (tonnage), as Busan area 22.3%(44.5%), Yeosu area 19.8%(11.2%), Wando-Jeju area18.1%(6.8%), Mokpo area 14.9%(9.9%), Gunsan area 9.1%(9.3%), Inchon area 8.1%(7.7%), Pohang area 5.5%(8.5%), and Donghae area 2.2%(2.1%). 2) For example in Busan area, the increment of traffic volume per annum is estimated 4, 102 ships (23 million tons) and the traffic flow in 2000 is evaluated 158, 793 ships (687 million tons). 3) consequently, the increment of traffic volume in Busan area is found the largest and followed by Yeosu, Wando-Jeju area. Also, the traffic flow per area in 2000 has the same order.

  • The amount of cargoes and fishery production have increased continuously during the last decade due to the great growth of the Korean economy. These increasements have made our coastal traffic congested, and the future coastal traffic is also expected to increase considerably. The increased traffic can be a cause of large sea pollution as well a s greater sea casualties us as properties and human lives, which could result in a big national loss. In order to prevent the sea casualties and promote the safety of coastal traffic, the Vessel Traffic Management System (VTMS) along the Korean coastal waterway is inevitably introduced. But, the precise evaluation is necessary required prior to the implementation of VTMS because this system necessitates a huge amount of budgets. This paper aims to propose the model of evaluation process, but the evaluation as to the urgency of establishment is not only very complicated and fuzzy but also affected by the subjectivity of human. Therefore, fuzzy integral is adopted as the mathematical model of evaluation in which decision-maker can intervence by making decision considering the calculated membership-function. Four aspects, namely, the frequency of sea-casualities, the traffic volume, the frequency fuzzy day, and the complexity of waterway are selected as the item of evaluation, and the fuzzy measure are applied to the evaluation of 8 candidated regions such as the adjacent area to the port Inchen, Kunsan, Mokpo, Wando, Yosu, Pusan, Pohang, Donghae. As a result of evaluation, the priority as to the candidated regions is obtained, and the following prior execution regions, namely, the adjacent area to the port Pusan, Yosu, Mokpo & Wando are selected by considering the present situation, but, in the long run, the VTMS should be executed in the whole coast of the nation, through the cost-effectiveness analysis.

  • Twelve morphological characters and the biochemical composition of Undaria pinnatifida f. distans sporophytes growing on the rocky shores of Jindo and Wando and on cultivation ropes in Kijang were measured to determine whether each population could be characterized by morphological features and biochemical composition. The goal of this study was to compare phenotypic variations between populations as they relate to environmental conditions. The sporophytes of the Kijang population were two times longer and 19 times heavier than those at Jindo. Sporophylls of the Jindo U. pinnatifida population were significantly smaller in length, width, frill number, and weight than those at Wando and Kijang. Kijang Undaria plants showed the highest contents of total protein, crude fiber, total amino acids, the amount of essential amino acids, the proportion of total unsaturated fatty acids, and eicosapentaenoic acid. However, the Jindo population showed the greatest content of carbohydrates, lipids, and minerals (Zn and Ca) of the three U. pinnatifida populations. In particular, Zn content of Jindo plants was 30 times greater than that of Kijang plants. Thus, the proximate composition, mineral composition, amino acids, and fatty acids of Undaria pinnatifida plants were distinguishable among the three representative Undaria populations evaluated. These results suggest that morphological and biochemical differences of the three U. pinnatifida populations can be attributed to differences in environmental conditions of their habitats.

  • An epidemiological study was performed to know the recent infection status of Paragonimus westermani metacercariae (PwMc) in freshwater crayfish, Cambaroides similis, from 2 streams in Jeollanam-do, Republic of Korea. Crayfish were collected from creeks in Bogil-do (Island), Wando-gun, and in a creek near Daeheung Temple in Haenam-gun. The infection rate of crayfish with PwMc in Bogil-do was 89.8%, and the metacercarial burden was 37 PwMc per the infected crayfish. Crayfish in a creek near Daeheung Temple were larger and twice heavier than those in Bogil-do. Of them, 96.5% were infected with PwMc. An average of 140 metacercariae was found in the infected crayfish, almost quadruple to those of Bogil-do. There was a strong correlation between the number of PwMc and body weight of the crayfish. These results suggest that P. westermani metacercariae are still prevalent in crayfish of the 2 regions in Jeollanam-do, Korea.

  • $\beta$-Sialon powder was prepared by the reduction-nitridation reaction from the mixture of Wando Pyrophyllite and carbon black at 135$0^{\circ}C$ in $N_2$ atmosphere. $\beta$-SiC powder was added to the prepared $\beta$-Sialon powder to make $\beta$-Sialon-SiC composite. The $\beta$-Sialon-SiC composites were sintered pressurelessly at 175$0^{\circ}C$ for 2h, using $Y_2O_3$ and $ZrO_2$(monoclinic) as sintering aids. Comparatively higher values of the fracture toughness (3.8 MN/㎥/2), M.O.R. (470 MN/$m^2$) and vickers microhardness (13.7 MN/$m^2$) were obtained when 10 wt% $Y_2O_3$ was added as a sintering aid. The improved fracture toughness and M.O.R. are assumed to be the results of crack deflection and crack branching by the second phase SiC particles.

  • Five species of intertidal clams including Ruditapes philippinarum, Tegillarca granosa, Solen strictus, Heteromacoma irus, and Coecella chinensis were tested for the presence of the protozoan parasite, Perkinsus sp. using fluid thioglycollate medium (FTM) fortified with antibiotics and histological techniques. Each individual clam was placed in a test tube filled with 10ml FTM, placed in totally dark place, and incubated over a week. After incubation the clam tissues were stained with Lugol's iodine solution and examined under a light microscope to find out any hypnospores of Perkensus sp. in the tissues. Cross-sections of the clams were also embedded in paraffin, sliced to 3um, and stained with Harry's hematoxylene and Picro eosine to observe the presence of tomont or trophozoites. Perkinsus sp. were found in the presence of tomont or trophozoites. Perkinsus sp. were found in the tissues of R. philippinarum collected from Kangjin and Wando, along the south coast of Korea. However, Perkinsus sp. was not found in four other species of clams nor R. philippinaurm collected from Kimnyong and Waido in Cheju. A size-dependent Perkinsus sp. infection was found in R. philippinarum collected rom Kangjin and Wando the clams smaller than 15mm in shell width do not exhibit and Perkinsus sp. while other clams greater than 20mm in shell width exhibit almost 100% infection. To determine the number of Perkinsus sp. in the clams, FTM cultured clam tissues were digested with 2M NaOH solution and the number of hypnospores in the tube were counted. The number of hypnospores counted from the tissues indicated that each Manila clam contains 100,000 to 3,500,000 Perkinsus cells or 20,000 to 1,000,000 cells per gram tissue wet weight. The results of cell counts also suggests that such a high occurrence of Perkinsus sp. in the clam may cause mortality, as already reported from other studies of Perkinsus spp.

  • Time series analysis was conducted to identify the factors affecting short-term variation of water temperature in Wando. Spectrum analysis showed that air temperature peaks at diurnal period, while water temperature and tide level peak at both semi-diurnal and diurnal periods. Coherence between water temperature and the tide level presented 0.92 at semi-diurnal period. Numerical experiment were carried out to understand the spatio-temporal distribution of water temperature in the study area. Average water temperature difference between maximum ebb and flood was $0.3^{\circ}C$ in spring tide, but $0.13^{\circ}C$ in neap tide. The reason for the large difference in spring tide is that relatively cold water entered with strong tidal currents at flood tide and flowed out at ebb tide. Water temperature on coasts was higher than out at sea. This is because the depth in the coast is shallower than at sea, and water temperature increases rapidly due to solar radiation.

  • The effect of water temperature and feed on the growth, survival, and body composition of juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) fed an artificial formulated diet and a macroalgae (Laminaria japonica) for 12 weeks was investigated. Rearing temperature was maintained at $13{\circ}C,\;16{\circ}C,\;19{\circ}C$ by heated and natural sea water temperatures $(7.5-10.2{\circ}C).$ Shell growth, weight gain, and survival rate of the abalone were affected by water temperature and diet (P<0.05). Survival and growth rate of the abalone fed with the formulated diet and Laminaria at $19{\circ}C$ was significantly higher than those of the abalone fed the formulated diet or Laminaria at $13{\circ}C,\;16{\circ}C,$ and ambient temperatures (P<0.05). Moisture, crude protein, crude lipid, and ash contents of the soft whole body were affected mainly by diet than rearing water temperature (P<0.05). These indicate that a mixture of formulated diet and macroalgae could improve the growth of the abalone independent of water temperature and heated water could improve the growth of abalone during the winter season.

  • Settlement of larvae, growth, and survival of juvenile abalone (Haliotis discus hannai) were examined after feding of 5 species of benthic diatoms (Cocconeis suctellum, Navicula sp Nitzschia longissima Bacillavia paxillifera, Licmophora flabellata). All of the benthic diatoms were isolated from natural populations on plastic plates for the abalone. The settlement of larvae, shell growth, and survival rate of juvenile abalone varied by diatoms species. The highest settlement rate of larvae was $43.1\%$ with the Cocconeis suctellum diet. Daliy growth rate reached a maximum at 64.1 ${\mu}m/day$ with the Navicula sp. diet and a minimum at 22.4 ${\mu}m/day$ with the Licmophora flabellata diet. Survival rate of the juvenile abalone was highest at $62.0\%$ with the Navicula sp., Cocconeis suctellum , and Nitzschia longissima diets. Survival rate of the Juvenile abalone was significantly higher than the control group with mixed diatom population diets (P<0.05). Therefore, diatom . species composition in diets can be a controling factor for the settlement, growth, and survival rates of Juvenile abalone.

  • As a part of the .study on the multiple propagation and use of Dendropanax mcrbifera, distribution of this tree and component analysis of Golden Lacquer were investigated to reappear the Golden Lacquer, traditional paints. These results were summarized as follows. The natural growth habitat of Dendropanax morbifera was observed in 8 sites(Wando, Sanghwangbong, etc.), we could be found that Duryun nountain in Haenam for the first time. Dendropunax morbifera has grown from 100 to 450m above the sea level, appeared high frequency in the 200m. The soil pH of natural growth site was pH 4.9 to pH 5.8. Dendropanax morbifera grew in the area containing considerable moisture in that its contents was 16.5% to 27.4%. In community observation, dominance and community index of Bogildo and Chejudo was 3.3 in the forest tree layer and Wando was showed in the sub-forest tree layer mainly. In the growth conditions, Bogildo appeared the highest growth state that diameter of height of human chest was 1.0 to 20cm and tree height was 0.2 to 9m. As result of IR and GC-MS analysis, main component of Golden Lacquer was ${\beta}$-selinene and capnellane-8-one.
