  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the cause of fine wrinkles occurred in silky wallpaper and its solution. The characteristics of base papers, wallpapers and adhesives (conventional and modified) were evaluated to find the possibility for the occurrence of fine wrinkles. It was found that the base papers and wallpapers did not cause the occurrence of silky wallpaper. It was concluded that the fine wrinkles in silky wallpaper was caused by the nonuniform distribution of adhesive, the localized shrinkage of adhesive and the breaking the balance between the resistance of wallpaper and shrinkage of adhesive. Three possible solutions for the prevention of the occurrence of fine wrinkles in silky paper were recommended.

  • In this study, natural substance and mineral materials was used for architectural interior wallpaper. Because natural substance and minerals are environment-friendly material with moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Natural substance and mineral materials was evaluated in moisture adsorption and desorption properties. Also, in the diatomite, the pores were observed on SEM photographs. Thus, it is supposed that moisture adsorption and desorption properties were influenced by the microstructure of the pore. The wallpaper according to the ratio of the mixture was analyzed for physical properties and moisture adsorption & desorption properties. As a result, we developed a wallpaper having excellent hygrothermal performance.

  • In the 1900s, the cultural crossing of East and West was realized through the acceptance and reproduction of culture. Cultural change in the Orient was the result of attempts to harmonize the West's images, which they chose in their respective countries, with their own culture. However, research on design history until now has been centered on the West, and East was regarded as a beneficiary of civilization inherited from Western's. From the point of view of Western design history as a main trend, the unique characteristics of Korean design culture are not revealed. Therefore, through this studies, we want to distinguish Korea's modern design, which has been recognized as a minority. For the study, through the wallpaper, which is one of the detailed components of the interior space in modern times, we try to analyze the socio - cultural historical factors and design characteristics influencing the formation of the interior space in modern times. Summarizing a result of research. The early modern wallpaper of England mainly uses plants as motifs. But In Korea, animal patterns and letter patterns were used. The reason why European wallpaper was mainly a plant at the time was that the structure of the motif was useful for the process of creation. However, in the case of the Korean wallpaper pattern, the theme was selected according to the meaning of the motif, and it was abstracted appropriately for the 2D design. As a result, many geometric shapes were formed. In addition, European wallpaper pattern is more complex and organic than Korean wallpaper pattern. Therefore, the boundary of the central pattern as the basic unit is unclear and the patterns are connected. The pattern development method is not a simple repetition but a combination of symmetry and repetition. In Korea, on the other hand, the boundaries of unit patterns are clear and patterns are developed by simple repetition. There are many diamond-type repeating patterns in particular.

  • As the population interested in interior design has been increasing, the global interior market has grown significantly. Global interior companies are developing and providing simulation services for various interior elements. Although wallpaper design is the most important interior element, existing wallpaper design simulation services are difficult to use due to drawbacks such as differences between expected and actual results, long simulation time, and the need for professional skills. We proposed a wallpaper image transformation method for interior design using cycle generative adversarial networks (GAN). The proposed method demonstrates that users can simulate wallpaper design within a short period of time based on interior image data using various types of wallpaper.

  • By taking wallpaper specimens from Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Chilgung Palace preserved from the late Joseon Dynasty to the present, we planned in this study to determine the types and characteristics of the paper used as wallpaper in the Joseon royal family. First, we confirmed the features of paper hanging in the palaces with old literature on the wallpaper used by the royal family based on archival research. Second, we conducted a field survey targeting the royal palaces whose construction period was relatively clear, and analyzed the first layer of wallpaper directly attached to the wall structure after sampling the specimens. Therefore, we confirmed that the main raw material was hanji, which was used as a wallpaper by the royal family, and grasped the types of substances(dyes and pigments) used to produce a blue color in spaces that must have formality by analyzing the blue-colored paper. Based on the results confirmed through the analysis, we checked documents and the existing wallpaper by comparing the old literature related to wallpaper records of the Joseon Dynasty palaces. We also built a database for the restoration of cultural properties when conserving the wallpaper in the royal palaces. We examined the changes in wallpaper types by century and the content according to the place of use by extracting wallpaper-related contents recorded in 36 cases of Uigwe from the 17th to 20th centuries. As a result, it was found that the names used for document paper and wallpaper were not different, thus document paper and wallpaper were used without distinction during the Joseon Dynasty. And though there are differences in the types of wallpaper depending on the period, it was confirmed that the foundation of wallpaper continued until the late Joseon Dynasty, with Baekji(white hanji), Hubaekji(thick white paper), jeojuji(common hanji used to write documents), chojuji(hanji used as a draft for writing documents) and Gakjang(a wide and thick hanji used as a pad). As a result of fiber identification by the morphological characteristics of fibers and the normal color reaction(KS M ISO 9184-4: Graph "C" staining test) for the first layer of paper directly attached to the palace wall, the main materials of hanji used by the royal family were confirmed and the raw materials used to make hanii in buildings of palaces based on the construction period were determined. Also, as a result of analyzing the coloring materials of the blue decorative paper with an optical microscope, ultraviolet-visible spectroscopic analysis(UV-Vis), and X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD), we determined that the type of blue decorative paper dyes and pigments used in the palaces must have formality and identified that the raw materials used to produce the blue color were natural indigo, lazurite and cobalt blue.

  • Plasticizer and heavy metals in domestic PVC wallpaper manufactured in Korea after 2005 were analyzed to identify the contained quantity in comparison with the 2002 manufactured PVC wallpapers. Plasticizer of wallpapers was analyzed by the method KSM1991 which uses soxhlet extraction with n-hexane and GC/FID. Heavy metals were pre-treated with 0.07 mol/L hydrochloric acid (HCl) and analyzed by ICP/OES according to the EN 71-part 3 method. DEHP, DINP, DEP, acetyl tributyl citrate were identified from wallpaper. Contents of DEHP, DINP were 0.2~11.3%, 17.9~27.8% respectively in 6 wallpapers, DEP and acetyl tributyl citrate were 1.5%, 8.9% respectively in one wallpaper. Plasticizers have changed from DEHP that has possibility of hazards to DINP, DEP and acetyl tributyl citrate as compared with 2002. Heavy metals were detected under guide line from all of the wallpapers except fire-retardant wallpaper contain antimony. While PVC wallpaper was improved by use of various plasticizer, functional wallpapers such as fire-resistant wallpaper contain high antimony in this study.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the making method and properties of Hanji(Korean traditional paper) for wallpaper for the purpose of mass production and mass consumption of Hanji. Paper mulberry fiber was longer than wood fiber in length and it had also much extractives and ash in content. Bast fiber was a little damaged in the fibrilation and beating process because it was weak in flexibility and compressive properties. Proper conditions for making two-ply and three-ply Hanji were examined and six kinds of Hanji were made on the basis of the three-ply paper making method. The sample OH(Original Hanji) 2-2 and OH 3-2 among them obtained good results in quality test by appearance from wallpaper makers.

  • In human history, scarf has acted not only as a protection for body but also as a symbolization of class. Today, scarf has become a whole field in fashion and an important accessory to express individuality in fashion. Hence, like other fashion item, it is very important to develop exclusive design for scarf by analyzing the current fashion trend. In this research, we have designed a scarf textile, accordance with the contemporary design trend, applying the floral pattern, designed by William Morris who was an artist considered as the founder of the 1800s arts and crafts movement. We selected four trend themes, "Salon de Archives", "Eco Tech", "Profound Nature", and "Neo Aristo" for the design of 2007/2008 Fall/Winter. The flower motifs in Pimpernel Wallpaper, Honeysuckle textile design, Acanthus Wallpaper, Garden tulip wallpaper, Evenlode printed cotton, Trellis Wallpaper, and Chrysanthemum Wallpaper, by William Morris who expressed an image of environment friendly and nature reversion, applied to develop new creative scarf through design after modifying and rearranging these flower patterns. After the pattern was drawn by hand, adjusting of color and repeating of the design was done with DTP (Digital Textile Printing). Through this research, the researchers hopes to be of assistance to the development of national scarf brand design, and to the recapturing of textile industry that once played a important role in Koreans economic development.
