  • This study is to evaluate the accuracy of the meteorological information provided for the aircraft operating at low altitude. At first, it is necessary to identify crucial elements of weather information closely related to flight safety during low altitude flights. The study conducted a survey of pilots of low altitude aircraft, divided into pre-flight and in-flight phases, and reached an opinion that wind direction, wind speed, cloud coverage and ceiling and visibility are important items. Related to these items, we compared and calculated the accuracy of TAFs and METARs from Taean Airfield, Seosan Airport and Gunsan Airport because of their high number of domestic low-altitude flights. Accuracy analysis evaluated the accuracy of two numerical variables, Mean Absolute Error(MAE) and Root Mean Square Error(RMSE), and the cloud coverage which is categorical variable was calculated and compared by accuracy. For numeric variables, one-way ANOVA, which is a parameter-test, was approached to identify differences between actual forecast values and observations based on absolute errors for each item derived from the results of MAE and RMSE accuracy analyses. To determine the satisfaction of both normality assumptions and equivalence variability assumptions, the Shapiro-Wilk test was performed to verify that they do not have a normality distribution for numerical variables, and for the non-parametric test, Kruscal-Wallis test was conducted to determine whether or not they are satisfied.

  • In order to aid the derivation of the IDF relationship for a station with insufficient duration-rainfall data, an approach to derive a simple and practical IDF formula is presented. The IDF formula is described simply by the term of the two parameters and a design frequency. The model parameters were estimated from a statistical technique based on the normal distribution of transformed rainfall intensities. In order to give the transformed data, both the Kruskal-Wallis statistic and the Manly transformation of duration-rainfall data were adopted. With the methods, the proposed IDF formula becomes a simpler model that compares well with conventional form. In addition, it allows avoiding an exceptional condition of the higher rainfall intensity for longer duration. The performance of the proposed formula was evaluated by using the limited rainfall data for short duration from two gauge stations. The result showed that the IDF formula developed in this work was an effective tool, providing a reliable relationship between the intensity and duration even though insufficient data are only available.

  • Multiple comparisons are required to confirm whether or not something is significant if the null hypothesis to test whether the difference between more than three treatments is rejected in a one-way layout. There are both parametric multiple comparison method Tukey (1953) and Nonparametric multiple comparison method based on Kruskal-Wallis (1952).This procedure is applied to a mixed sample of all data and then an average ranking is used for each of three or more treatments. In this paper, a new nonparametric multiple comparison procedure based on joint placements for a one-way layout as extension of the joint placements described in Chung and Kim (2007) was proposed. Monte Carlo simulation is also adapted to compare the family wise error rate (FWE) and the power of the proposed method with previous methods.

  • In this study, nonhierarchical K-mean cluster analysis is used to classify the types of 230 local governments and the Mann-Whitney U test and Kruskal-Wallis analysis are used to analyze the characteristics of pedestrian accidents by region types. With empirical analysis of pedestrian accidents, this study suggests improvements of walking environments reflecting local characteristics. Type 1-A (relatively dominant urban commercial areas), Type 1-B (predominantly urban residence) and Type 2 (rural areas) have been classified using nonhierarchical K-mean cluster analysis. According to the results, pedestrian accident rate on community roads was more than 60% for all types and incidence rate in rural areas was higher than that in urban areas. In addition, pedestrian accidents of Type 1-B have been found to occur more frequently than Type 2 in intersections and crossings, while the number of roadside casualties for Type 2 was highest.
