This paper presents the effect of internal corrosion, external corrosion, material properties, operation condition, earthquake, traffic load and design thickness in pipeline on the failure prediction using a failure probability model. A nonlinear corrosion is used to represent the loss of pipe wall thickness with time. The effects of environmental, operational, and design random variables such as a pipe diameter, earthquake, fluid pressure, a corrosion rate, a material yield stress and a pipe thickness on the failure probability are systematically investigated using a failure probability model for the corrosion pipeline.
Laminar natural convection heat transfer from a horizontal heat exchanger tube with one infinitely long vertical plate fin has been studied by a finite-difference numerical procedure. In predicting convective heat transfer from a circular tube, the thermal boundary condition at solid fluid interface is usually assumed to be isothermal. However, in reality, the thermal boundary condition is not isothermal, and the tube has the thickness and the conductivity. So the temperature at the interface is not known a priori to the calculation. This problem has the conjugate phenomena which occur between the tube conduction and external natural convection, and between the fin conduction and external natural convection. Numerical results are obtained to determine the effects of the conductivity of solid wall and the thickness of tube wall on heat transfer. It is found that the conduction causes significant influence on the natural convection heat transfer at low K and high ${\delta}$.
The nanofluidics is characterized by a large surface-to-volume ratio, so that the surface properties strongly affect the flow resistance. We present here the results showing that the effect of wetting properties and the surface roughness may considerably reduce the friction of fluid past the boundaries. For a simple fluid flowing over hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces, the influences of surface roughness are investigated by the nonequilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) simulations. The fluid slip at near a solid surface highly depends on the wall-fluid interaction. For hydrophobic surfaces, apparent fluid slips are observed on smooth and rough surfaces. The solid wall is modeled as a rough atomic sinusoidal wall. The effects on the boundary condition of the roughness characteristics are given by the period and amplitude of the sinusoidal wall. It was found that the slip velocity for wetting conditions at interface decreases with increasing effects of surface roughness. The results show the surface rougheness and wettability determines the slip or no-slip boundary conditions. The surface roughness geometry shows significant effects on the boundary conditions at the interface.
NSBT(No Slip Boundary Treatment) is a newly developed scheme for the treatment of a no slip condition on the solid wall of obstacle in a flow field. In our research, NSBT was used to perform LBM simulation of a flow over a circular cylinder to determine the flow feature and aerodynamics characteristic of the cylinder. To ascertain the applicability of NSBT on the complex shape of the obstacle, it was first simulated for the case of the flow over a circular and square cylinder in a channel and the results were compared against the solution of Navier-Stokes equation. The simulations were performed in a moderate range of Reynolds number at each cylinder position to identify the flow feature and aerodynamic characteristics of circular cylinder in a channel. The drag coefficients of the cylinder were calculated from the simulation results. We have numerically confirmed that the critical reynolds number for vortex shedding is in the range of 200$\sim$250. For the gap parameter $\gamma$ = 2 cases at Re > 240, the vortex shedding were symmetric and it resembled the Karmann vortex. As the cylinder approached to one wall, the vorticity significantly reduced in length while the vorticity on the other side elongated and the vorticity combined with the wall boundary-layer vorticity. The resultant $C_d$ by LBM concurred with the results of DNS simulation performed by previous researchers.
The turbulent flow with wake, reattachment and recirculation is a very important problem that is related to vehicle dynamics and aerodynamics. The Smagorinsky Model (SM), the Dynamics Subgrid Scale Model (DSM), and the Lagrangian Dynamic Subgrid Scale Model (LDSM) are used to predict the three-dimensional flow field around a bluff body model. The Reynolds number used is 45,000 based on the bulk velocity and the height of the bluff body. The fully developed turbulent flow, which is generated by the driver part, is used for the inlet boundary condition. The Convective boundary condition is imposed on the outlet boundary condition, and the Spalding wall function is used for the wall boundary condition. We compare the results of each model with the results of the PIV measurement. First of all, the LES predicts flow behavior better than the k-$\xi$ turbulence model. When ew compare various LES models, the DSM and the LDSM agree with the PIV experimental data better than the SM in the complex flow, with the separation and the reattachment at the upper front part of th bluff body. But in the rear part of the bluff body, the SM agrees with the PIV experimental results better than them. In this case, the SM predicts overall flow behavior better than the DSM nd the LDSM.
The noise sources in ship and offshore structure have an influence on adjacent receiving area through a partition between noise sources and receiving area. The partition in ship is usually made of stiffened plate. Sound transmission loss (STL) of the partition at high frequency could be improved by additional installation of insulation or wall panel. At low frequency, however, it is very difficult and needs an increase of plate thickness which causes a considerable weight increase of ship. In this paper, we have investigated the effect of the bulkhead boundary condition. From measurement result, we found that the bulkhead boundary condition can affect a lot in STL, especially at low frequency range. Finally, we get the 5dB increase in STL through the modification of boundary condition.
Large amplitude sloshing can occur in contained fluid region due to the seismic ground motion. Also, The pressure by large amplitude sloshing damages the connections between the wall and roof of a fluid container and causes outflow of contained fluid. Therefore, to predict the dynamic behavior accurately, three dimensional analysis with the nonlinear boundary condition must be performed. In this study, the numerical solution procedure is developed using the boundary element method with the Lagrangian particle approach. In order to demonstrate the accuracy and validity of the developed method, the fluid motion for a free oscillation with small amplitude and a forced vibration are analyzed. And the numerical results are compared with the linear theory results and the previous studies with the nonlinear boundary condition.
A computational study has been performed to examine the effects of catalytic walls on the stagnation region heat transfer. The boundary conditions for none, finite, and fully catalytic walls have been incorporated into a multi-block compressible Navier-Stokes solver. In the present study, both chemical and thermal non-equilibrium effects were included. The flows over a blunt body model were simulated by varying surface catalytic recombination rates. A full range of catalycities was explored in the context of a constant wall temperature assumption. Detailed information on species concentrations, temperature, and surface heat flux are presented. Comparison with available flight data of surface heat flux is also made.
In this thesis, the Sol-Air temperature distribution for the side-wall of a cylindrical cryogenic storage tank made of nonhomogenious composite layer was studied, in order to calculate the thermal load by Newton's cooling law, when the solar radiation was applied upon the side wall. In the analysis, the atmospheric slab was assumed to be horizontal and infinitely large, and the Sol -Air temperature, which was found by the Net- Radiation method considering the longwave radiation wi th surroundings, was used for boundary condition. Energy equation and boundary conditions were normalized by the defined reference- temperature, and solved. The solutions were developed by the Fourier cosine series. Then, the Sol-Air temperature distribution for the side-wall of LNG storage tank was calculated.
When a flame is stabilized in a tube of a finite thickness, a conductive heat transfer through the tube significantly changes the wall temperature and affects the flame characteristics. Thus the tube length and thermal boundary conditions affect on the structure of the flame in a conductive tube. A one-dimensional analytical study was conducted by employing two energy equations for tubes and mixtures and a species equation for the mixture. Variation of the maximum temperatures and indicating displacements were observed. A parametric study on the effects of inner Peclet numbers, normalized wall conductivities, and heat transfer conditions of the tube was conducted. This study provides essential data for a more efficient computational simulation of the flame stabilized in conductive tubes.
