In this paper, we proposed a method for estimating energy expenditure using the unfixed axis of the accelerometer. Most studies adopted waist-placement because of the fact that the waist is close to the center of mass of a whole human body. But we adopted pocket-placement, which is capable of using unfixed axis of sensor, that is more convenient than conventional methods. To evaluate the proposed method, 28 male subjects performed walking and running on a motor driven treadmill. All of subject put on the indirect calorimeter and fixed accelerometer, then data were simultaneously measured during exercise. The regression analysis was performed using the test group(n=20) and the regression equation was applied to the control group(n=8). A strong linear relationship between energy expenditure and unfixed accelerometer signal was found. Futhermore, the coefficient of determination was significantly reliable($R^2$=0.98) and showed zero of p-value. The error of energy expenditure estimation between indirect calorimeter and two types of accelerometer was 15.0%(fixed) and 17.0%(unfixed) respectively. These results show the possibilities that the unfixed accelerometer can be used in estimating the energy expenditure during exercise.

A multidisciplinary weight control program was conducted for obese women. The major components of the program included low calorie diet therapy, exercise, behavior modification and nutritional education and counseling. Sixteen healthy volunteers in excess of body fat, above 30%, were enrolled in the group support program. But 5 person were dropped out in the 2nd week of treatment. During the 1st week of group orientation, individual cause of obesity was assessed through a computer program including survey of dietary intake, activity, eating habits and life styles. During the 5 weeks of treatment, 4.8kg of average weight loss was accomplished using a following program ; low calorie diet(1200kcal/day with all essential nutrients), low impact aerobic exercise(50~60% of $VO_{2max}$, 1 hour/day in a group, 3~5 days/week), behavior modification of individual life styles and eating habits causing obesity and nutritional education concerning nutrition, role of exercise such as brisk walking, importance of slow eating in regular meal pattern and internal motivation for weight reduction, health risk of obesity and rapid weight loss, weight recycling and yo-yo syndrome, etc. Nutritional conseling was conducted 3 times per week with checking self-records of foods, activity, emotional state and tiredness. Before and immediately after 5 weeks of treatment, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, cholesterol and triglyceride were measured and comparied with paired t-test. After 5 weeks of treatment, body weight, body mass index, body fat and circumferences of waist, upper arm and hip were significantly decreased. Also LDL-cholesterol was significantly decreased after obesity treatment.
Purpose: This study was designed to investigate the effects of treadmill exercise on functional recovery after rat with experimental SCI. Methods: SCI was induced by the NYU-spinal cord impactor(NYU, USA) dropped a weight of 10 gm after laminectomy. In general, Personal Navigation Systems (PNSs) can be defined systems to acquire pedestrian positional information. GPS is an example of PNS. However, GPS can only be used where the GPS signal can be received. Pedestrian Dead Reckoning (PDR) can estimate the positional information of pedestrians using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). Therefore, PDR can be used for GPS-disabled areas. This paper proposes a PDR scheme considering various movement types over GPS-disabled areas as combat environments. We propose a movement distance estimation scheme and movement direction estimation scheme as pedestrian's various movement types such as walking, running and crawling using IMU. Also, we propose a fusion algorithm between GPS and PDR to mitigate the lack of accuracy of positional information at the entrance to the building. The proposed algorithm has been tested in a real test bed. In the experimental results, the proposed algorithms exhibited an average position error distance of 5.64m and position error rate in goal point of 3.41% as a pedestrian traveled 0.6km.

Study Design: Case-control. Purpose: To determine optimal cut-off value for body mass index (BMI) in predicting surgical success in patients with lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSCS). Overview of Literature: BMI is an essential variable in the assessment of patients with LSCS. Methods: We conducted a prospective study with obese and non-obese LSCS surgical patients and analyzed data on age, sex, duration of symptoms, walking distance, morphologic grade of stenosis, BMI, postoperative complications, and functional disability. Obesity was defined as BMI of ${\geq}30kg/m^2$. Patients completed the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI) questionnaire before surgery and 2 years after surgery. Surgical success was defined as ${\geq}30%$ improvement from the baseline ODI score. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was used to estimate the optimal cut-off values of BMI to predict surgical success. In addition, correlation was assessed between BMI and stenosis grade based on morphology as defined by Schizas and colleague in total, 189 patients were eligible to enter the study. Results: Mean age of patients was $61.5{\pm}9.6years$. Mean follow-up was $36{\pm}12months$. Most patients (88.4%) were classified with grades C (severe stenosis) and D (extreme stenosis). Post-surgical success was 85.7% at the 2-year follow-up. A weak correlation was observed between morphologic grade of stenosis and BMI. Rates of postoperative complications were similar between patients who were obese and those who were non-obese. Both cohorts had similar degree of improvement in the ODI at the 2-year followup. However, patients who were non-obese presented significantly higher surgical success than those who were obese. In ROC curve analysis, a cut-off value of ${\leq}29.1kg/m^2$ for BMI in patients with LSCS was suggestive of surgical success, with 81.1% sensitivity and 82.2% specificity (area under the curve, 0.857; 95% confidence interval, 0.788-0.927). Conclusion: This study showed that the BMI can be considered a parameter for predicting surgical success in patients with LSCS and can be useful in clinical practice.

This study is aimed to find out the effect of PAPS-D on physical fitness of developmental disabled students who participated of Inline skate program. The subject of this study was 10 middle and high school students diagnosed as developmental disability. The subject attended a total of 32 classes twice a week for 16 weeks and the class was 1 hour each time. Improvement of physical fitness was assessed based on PAPS-D program developed by the Department of Education science in 2016 except for obesity measurement; cardio pulmonary function (walking in 6 minutes), flexibility (seated forward bend, clasped hand behind the back), muscle function (sit-up) and agility (standing long jump). To find out the interaction between control group and experimental group, two-way repeated measure ANOVA was used. As a result, there was a statistically significant relation in cardio pulmonary function and agility but not in flexibility and muscle function. 3 variables (cardio pulmonary function, flexibility and muscle function) among 4 variables showed positive effect of Inline skate program on physical fitness while one variable which was agility showed decreased result in post-test. Based on the results of three variables that were found to have improved in the pre post-examination, the result of this study indicates positive effect of Inline skating program on physical fitness of developmentally disabled students.

This study investigated the effect of extracorporeal shock wave therapy on the knee angle, MAS, and TUG of the affected side in patients with hemiplegic strokes. This study selected 20 patients who received rehabilitation treatment at a hospital after having been diagnosed with stroke. The control group (n=10) received the general physiotherapy (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation), and the experimental group (n=10) applied the extracorporeal shock wave therapy (ESWT) to the injured limb after PNF treatment. This study used an integrated kinematics analyzer (4D-MT, Relive, Korea) to analyze walking, timed up and go test to evaluate the dynamic balance ability of patients, and MAS to evaluate the spasticity. In the study results, knee angle were significantly different in all groups(p<0.05) but there was no significant difference between the groups(p>0.05). In the study results, TUG were significantly different in all groups(p<0.05) but there was no significant difference between the groups(p>0.05). Based on the results of this study, I hope that more detailed research will proceed.

Stroke results in balance disorders, these directly affect autonomy and gait ability. The aim of this meta-analysis was to determine the efficacy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on balance and gait. We included all randomized controlled trials assessing the efficacy of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation on balance and gait control in patients after stroke. This study was conducted according to the PRISMA guideline. Cochrane library, CINAHL, and PubMed were searched for studies published up to November 2021, and all randomized controlled trails(RCT) assessing PNF therapy were included. This analysis included only RCT. A total of 18 studies were selected from 1091 records obtained from the databases. The meta-analysis was performed using the R project for statistical computing version 4.0.2. The overall intervention effect was middle (standardized mean difference (SMD): 0.56) Additionally, berg balance scale (SMD: 0.48), functional reach test (SMD: 0.51), timed up and go test (SMD: 0.78), 10m walking test (SMD: 0.52), and dynamic gait index (SMD: 0.33) had medium effect sizes. The average Pedro scale was 6.63 out of 18, with a low risk of bias. These findings indicate that PNF is an effective therapy for improving balance gait in stroke patients.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of resistance exercise with vibration stimulation methods on static balance and gait parameters in experienced back pain adults. This study was Three group pretest-posttest design. A total of 30 experienced back pain adults voluntarily participated in the study. Subjects were randomly assigned to the resistance exercise with 8 Hz vibration stimulation(n=10), resistance exercise with 30 Hz vibration stimulation(n=10), and lumbar stabilization exercise groups(n=10). The static balance and the gait parameters, as such stance phase, swing phase, stride length and cadence, were measured using balance measuring equipment and gait analysis treadmill at before and after 6 week. Intervention of each group were performed, three times a week for 6 weeks, and 30 minutes a day. The effect of intervention on static balance, stance phase, swing phase, stride length and cadence were significantly differences after 6 weeks in each group(p<.05). In the comparison of the effects between the groups, static balance and stance phase were significantly difference after 6 weeks(p<.05), but in the swing phase, stride length and cadence, there were no significant differences. As a result, it is considered that resistance exercise with vibration stimulation improved leg muscle strength by a mechanism causing muscle contraction, and the strengthened leg muscle enhanced had a positive effect on balance ability. And improved balance ability was considered a more positive effect on walking ability by allowing the body to stably control posture while moving.
