  • In this paper, a node architecture of WDM metro network for connecting broadband access networks to converge wire/wireless networks. In consideration of the proposed node architecture and network requirements we proposed and evaluated medium access control protocols. We review WDM related technologies of sub-carrier multiplexing and optical components in order to resolve the bottleneck between optical backbone networks md access networks, and a access node architecture sharing common wavelength is introduced. Source-stripping (SS) MAC protocol Is evaluated under the proposed functional node architecture. DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Source-Stripping) and DS+IS (Destination-Stripping and Intermediate-Stripping) MAC protocols are described to increase the slot-reuse factor which is low on SS MAC protocol. The key function of new MAC protocols regards the optical switch module of proposed node architecture and helps intermediate or source access nodes for dropping slots to destinations of different wavelength group. Thus, slot-reuse factor increases as the MAC protocols reduce the unnecessary ring-rotation of transferred slots. We use a numerical analysis to expect bandwidth efficiency and maximum throughput by slot-reuse factor Throughput network simulation, the verification of throughput, queuing delay, and transmission fairness are compared among MAC protocols.

  • In this paper, novel traffic gromming algorithms are proposed with a primary goal of maximize the throughput in WDM(Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring networks. To achieve this goal, we analyze two network designs that are Lightpath Designs and Virtual Topology Designs and simulate the throughput in various traffic environments. From this methods, we propose novel traffic gromming algorithms to maximize the throughput.

  • This paper presents the routing and wavelength and timeslot assignment problems for a circuit-switched time division multiplexed (TDM) wavelength-routed networks. In this paper, we propose an efficient distributed control protocol for establishing lightpath dynamically. The protocol uses backward reservation to reduce the chance of blocking. We use aggressive reservation method with usable multiple channels and select only one in multiple channel. We show through simulation that the proposed protocol improves the success rate in TDM-based lightpath establishment and the proposed aggressive reservation method improve blocking probability with appropriate reservation channel count.

  • WDM is an incredibly promising technique in which multiple channels are operated along a single fiber, providing the facilities of terabit per second bandwidth. Thus, the survivability of WDM networks becomes critical for the success of the next generation internet architecture. Despite the fact that the path-based proactive restoration scheme guarantees 100% restoration as it computes a backup light path while the primary light path is being set up, this method results in additional capacity consumption. In this paper, an ideal technique is proposed that modifies the active multi-backup paths method and results in a better restoration scheme. Based on a theoretical analysis, a new method is shown to reduce the number of hopes as well as the restoration time.

  • This thesis describes two wavelength allocation algorithms applied to OMS (Optical Multiplex Section) or OCh (Optical Channel) SPRING (Shared Protection Ring) and compares their characteristics by simulations. Two wavelength allocation algorithms are optimal algorithm and nonblocking algorithm applicable on SPRING WDM networks. In particular, when a node is added in previous ring network, how to work for each algorithm is considered. The optimal algorithm is better than nonblocking for most of comparisons. Nonblocking algorithm has an important advantage, though. Nonblocking algorithm has no wavelength connection or allocation to reconfigure some previous connections.

  • In this paper we propose an every-other-row-connecting bilayered ShuffkeNet for optical WDM(wavelength division multiplexing) multihop networks. We calculate the diameter and the average number of hops of the proposed every-other-row-connecting bilayered ShuffleNet. Using the result, we also calcuate throughputs and delays of the proposed topology, which show higher efficiencies compared to the conventional ShuffleNet, the bilayered ShuffleNet and asymmetric bilayered ShuffleNet.

  • Passive optical networks (PONs) are the emerging solution for access networks since PONs provide high bandwidth. TDM ((time-division multiplexing) PON cannot support sufficient bandwidth for new broadband services such as UHD (ultra high-definition) IP TV, and VOD (video on demand). The solution is TWDM PON which is a mixture of WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) and TDM. This paper proposes a new MAC (media access control) protocol for TWDM PON.

  • In this study, we propose a mathematical model based on the graph theory for the wavelength assignment problem arising in the design of SDH (Synchronous Digital Hierarchy) over WDM (Wavelength Division Multiplexing) ring networks. We propose a branch- and -price algorithm to solve the suggested models effectively within reasonable time in realistic SDH over WDM ring networks. By exploiting the structure of ring networks, we developed a polynomial time algorithm for efficient column generation and a branching rule that conserves the structure of column generation. In a computer simulation study, the suggested approach can find the optimal solutions within reasonable time and show better performance than the existing heuristics.

  • This paper compares four network con-figurations for using as the logical topology in multi- hop wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) networks. The regular network configurations studied in this paper axe ShuffleNet, de Bruijn graph, hypercube, and Man-hattan street network. Instead of using the weight mean hop distance of node placement problem for comparing optimum logical topology, we introduce a new objective function that includes h and the network cost. It can be seen that the network cost strongly depends on the logical topology selected for the implementation of the network. The objective of this paper is to find an optimum logical topology for WDM networks that gives low as well as low network cost.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient sequencing technique, namely minimum Row time scheduling (MFTS), to manage variable-Iength message transmissions for single-hop passive starcoupled WDM optical networks. By considering not only the message length but also the state of the receivers and the tuning latency, the proposed protocol can reduce the average delay of the network greatly. This paper also introduces a new channel assignment technique latency minimizing scheduling (LMS), which aims to reduce the scheduling latency. We evaluate the proposed algorithm, using extensive discrete-event simulations, by comparing its performance with shortest job first (SJF) algorithm. We find that significant improvement in average delay could be achieved by MFTS algorithm. By combining the proposed message sequencing technique with the channel selection technique, the performance of the optical network could be further improved.
