W-10vol.%ZrC composites reinforced by micrometric and nanosized ZrC particles were prepared by hot-pressing of 25 MPa for 2 h at $1900^{\circ}C$. The effect of ZrC particle size on microstructure and mechanical properties at room temperature and elevated temperatures was investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope observations and the flexural strength test of the W-ZrC composite. Microstructural analysis of the W-ZrC composite revealed that nanosized ZrC particles were homogeneously dispersed in the W matrix inhibiting W grain growth compared to W specimen with micrometric ZrC particle. As a result, its flexural strength was significantly improved. The flexural strength at room temperature for W-ZrC composite using nanosized ZrC particle being 740 MPa increased by around 2 times than that of specimen using micrometric ZrC particle which was 377 MPa. The maximum strength of 935 MPa was tested at $1200^{\circ}C$ on the W composite specimen containing nanosized ZrC particle.
$ZrO_2$ is a candidate material for hip and knee joint replacements because of its excellent combination of biocompatibility, corrosion resistance and low density. However, the drawback of pure $ZrO_2$ is a low fracture toughness at room temperature. One of the most obvious tactics to cope with this problem is to fabricate a nanostructured composite material. Nanomaterials can be produced with improved mechanical properties(hardness and fracture toughness). The high-frequency induction heated sintering method takes advantage of simultaneously applying induced current and mechanical pressure during sintering. As a result, nanostructured materials can be achieved within very short time. In this study, W and $ZrO_2$ nanopowders are mechanochemically synthesized from $WO_3$ and Zr powders according to the reaction($WO_3+3/2Zr{\rightarrow}W+3/2ZrO_2$). The milled powders are then sintered using high-frequency induction heating within two minutes under the uniaxial pressure of 80MPa. The average fracture toughness and hardness of the nanostructured W-3/2 $ZrO_2$ composite sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ are $540kg/mm^2$ and $5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$, respectively. The fracture toughness of the composite is higher than that of monolithic $ZrO_2$. The phase and microstructure of the composite is also investigated by XRD and FE-SEM.
A new process of emulsiion-spray pyrolysis for synthesizing ceramic powders was developed and the characteristics of Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 composite powders prepared by this method were investigated. The composite powders synthesized in this study were spherical dense particles with 0.1~0.4${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of diameter. As found in powders derived by the emulsion-hot kerosene drying method, all zirconia in Al2O3-20w/o ZrO2 powders heat-treated at 120$0^{\circ}C$ was in the tetragonal form at room temperature. The relative density and the fracture toughness of composites sintered at 1$650^{\circ}C$ for 4hrs were 95% and 5.2MPa.m1/2, respectively.
W-ZrC and W-HfC composite powders were fabricated by the Plasma Alloying & Spheroidization (PAS) method and the powders were sprayed into hybrid coating layers by using Low Vacuum Plasma Spray (LVPS) process, respectively. Microstructure, mechanical properties, and ablation characteristics of the fabricated coating layers were investigated. The LVPS process led to successful production of W-Carbide hybrid coatings, approximately 400 ${\mu}M$ or above in thickness. As the substrate preheating temperature increased from $870^{\circ}C$ to $917^{\circ}C$, the hardness of the W-ZrC coating layer increased due to decreased porosity. Vickers hardness showed higher value (about 108.4 HV) in W-ZrC hybrid coating material compared to that of W-HfC while adhesive strength was found to be similar in both coating layers. The plasma torch test revealed good ablation resistance of the W-Carbide hybrid coating layers. The relatively high performance W-ZrC coating layer at the elevated temperature is thought to be attributed to both the strengthening effect of ZrC particle remained in the layer and the formation of ZrO2 phase with high temperature stability.
$Al_2O_3$-20w/o $ZrO_2$ composite powders were prepared by the emulsion-coprecipitation method and the effects of preparative conditions on powder characteristics were investigated. In the preparation of $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders, toluene was used instead of kerosene as the oil phase in emulsions. After coprecipitation, the emulsion was easily broken into a single liquid phase by adding methanol, and then precipitates could be effectively collected by filteration. The fact that all $ZrO_2$ phases present at room temperature in composite powders calcined at $1100^{\circ}C$ after washed by methanol had a tetragonal structure confirmed that methanol-washing enhanced the dispersibility of fine $ZrO_2$ particles in $Al_2O_3$ matrix. $Al_2O_3$-$ZrO_2$ composite powders were spherical particles of 0.2${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ diameter. Pellets sintered at $1650^{\circ}C$ for 2hrs showed the relative theoretical density of 97.3% and the fracture toughness of 5.01MN/$m^{3/2}$.

This paper reports the microstructures and thermal conductivities of $ZrB_2$-SiC composite ceramics with size and amount of SiC. We fabricated sintered bodies of $ZrB_2$-x vol.% SiC (x=10, 20, 30) with submicron and nanosized SiC densified by spark plasma sintering. Microstructure retained the initial powder size of especially SiC, except the agglomeration of nanosized SiC. For sintered bodies, thermal conductivities were examined. The observed thermal conductivity values are 40~60 W/mK, which is slightly lower than the reported values. The relation between microstructural parameter and thermal conductivity was also discussed.

[ $ZrO_2-TiO_2$ ]binary oxides with various Zr:Ti molar ratios were prepared by sol-gel method and Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membranes were fabricated for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) at high temperature and low humidity. Water uptake, Ion exchange capacity (IEC), and proton conductivity of Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membranes were characterized and these composite membranes were tested in a single cell at $120^{\circ}C$ with various relative humidity (R.H.) conditions. The obtained results were compared with the unmodified membranes (Nafion$^{(R)}$ 112 and Recast Nafion$^{(R)}$). A Nafion$^{(R)}$/$ZrO_2-TiO_2$ composite membrane with 1:3 of Zr:Ti molar ratio showed the highest performance. The performance showed 500 mW/$cm^2$ (0.499V) at $120^{\circ}C$, 50% R. H., and 2 atm.
The mechanical properties of $MoSi_2$ based composites containing various types of reinforcement, such as SiC, $ZrO_2$, and W, were investigated, based on detailed examinations of their microstructures. $MoSi_2$ based composites were fabricated at a temperature of $1350^{\circ}C$ using a hot-press device. The volume fraction of SiC and $ZrO_2$ particles in this composite system was fixed as 20%. The volume fraction of three types of W particles was changed from 10% to 30%. The characteristics of the $MoSi_2$ based composites were determined by means of optical microscopy and a three-point bending test. The addition of W particles to the $MoSi_2$ powders exhibited a sufficient improvement in the microstructure and mechanical property of the sintered $MoSi_2$ materials, compared to those of SiC and $ZrO_2$ particles. In particular, W/$MoSi_2$ composites containing W particles of 20 vol% represented a good flexural strength of about 530MPa at room temperature, accompanying a relative density of about 92%. The flexural strength of the W/$MoSi_2$ composites tended to decrease with an increase in the average size of the W particles.
The W-Cu composite powders were synthesized from W and Cu elemental powders by ball-milling process, and their microstructural changes and sintering behaviors were evaluated. The ball milling process was carried out in a 3-dimensional mixer (Turbula mixer) using zirconic ($ZrO_2$) ball and alumina ($Al_2O_3$) vial up to 300 hrs. The ball-milled W-Cu powders revealed nearly spherical shape. Microstructure of the composite powders showed onion-like structure which consists of W and Cu shells due to the moving characteristic of Turbula mixer. The W and Cu elements in the composite powders milled for 300 hrs were homogeneously distributed, and W grain size in the ball-milled powder was smaller than 0.5 $\mu\textrm{m}$. Fe impurity introduced during ball milling process was very low as of 0.001 wt%. The relative sintered density of ball-milled W-Cu specimens reached about 94% after sintering at $1100^{\circ}C$.

The composition and structure of dendrite phase within $Zr_{76.11}Ti_{4.20}Cu_{4.51}Ni_{3.16}Be_{1.49}Nb_{10.53}$ bulk metallic glass (BMG) were confirmed by using an EPMA, XRD and TEM, respectively. The chief elements of dendrite phase were Zr-Ti-Nb and had a BCC structure. The thermal properties of this BMG have been then subsequently investigated by using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The glass transition and crystallization onset temperatures were determined as $339.7^{\circ}C$ and $375.8^{\circ}C$ for this alloy, respectively. Mechanical properties have also been examined by conducting a series of uniaxial compression tests at various temperatures within supercooled liquid region under the strain rates between $10^{-4}/s$ and $3{\times}10^{-2}/s$. The deformation behavior of BMG composite within supercooled liquid region is similar to one of Vit-1 exhibiting amorphous single phase alloy. The flow stresses of BMG composite, however, are entirely higher than those of Vit-1 because dendrite phases are interfere with moving of atoms.
