  • In order to promote the volunteer activity management of public libraries, the need on the standard manual for volunteer activity of public libraries has become inevitably urgent. In this context, this study builds a theoretical background on the volunteer activity of public libraries, on its management and on its standard manual; examines the volunteer activity management of public libraries including its planning, personal management and administration; and classifies them into twelve domains and six work flows based on the literature review and case studies; and develops the standard manual for volunteer activity of public libraries. By so doing, this study aims at enhancing our understanding on the volunteer activity management of public libraries.

  • As the volunteer activity has become universal, volunteers of public libraries have also grown both quantitatively and qualitatively. In this context, this study builds a theoretical background on the volunteer activity of public libraries; examines the volunteer activity management of public libraries using survey method including its planning, personal management and administration; and suggests some recommendations to promote the voluntary activity of public libraries. By so doing, this study aims at enhancing our understanding on the volunteer activity management of public libraries.

  • Purpose: This study investigates the factors affecting spirituality in nursing students. Method: A total of 247 nursing students participated in the study. Data were analyzed by frequencies, t-tests, ANOVA, Pearson correlation coefficients and multiple stepwise regression via SPSS WIN 18.0. Results: The mean scores for hope, gratitude, and spirituality were above-average. However, there were significant mean differences in spirituality according to religion, religious activity, voluntary service, satisfaction with the nursing field, and motivation for entering a college of nursing. Spirituality positively correlated with hope and gratitude. Significant predictors of spirituality included hope, gratitude, voluntary service and religious activity. The regression model explained 51.3% of perceived spirituality. Conclusion: To improve spirituality among nursing students, nursing educators should develop educational intervention programs to promote hope and gratitude, and support participation in voluntary service and religious activity.

  • Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to examine the effects of the area of the base of support formed by the human body on the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of upper limb muscles. Methods: The study was conducted with 20 normal adults. To identify changes in the base of support, the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the biceps muscle was measured in a standing position, a sitting position, and a lying position for each subject. The sizes of the base of support formed in the standing, sitting, and lying positions were set to 1, 2, and 3 respectively, based on the sizes, to analyze the correlations. The maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the biceps muscle was measured using surface electromyograms (EMGs) (Noraxon DTS, Germany). Results: The results showed negative correlations in which, as the size of the base of support increased, the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the biceps muscle decreased. Conclusion: Changes in the base of support of the body affect the maximal voluntary isometric contraction of the upper limbs. Therefore, when resistance exercises are applied for muscle strengthening, the positions should be changed considering the changes in muscle activity according to those positions. In addition, when EMGs are used to measure the maximal voluntary isometric contraction, the measurements should be conducted in the same positions, considering muscle activity that changes according to the base of support and positions, for data quantification.

  • This study was intended to find out the differences of characteristics between the married women who were participating in the voluntary activities and those who were not. Based on the review of various theories on the volunteerism, the three variable groups - demographic, psychosocial and family related- were identified as the possible factors which differentiate the characteristics of those two groups. The results were as follows 1) Significant group differences were found in the age, the last child's age, education, income, sense of health, religion, the degree of religious activities, leisure satisfaction and type of leisures. 2) Married women participating in the voluntary activities showed more sociable, higher sense of responsibility to the society and more distinct feeling of social identity. 3) Family -related variables such as family function, type of family, the degree of socialization in the family and experiences and quality of contact with successful volunteers were found to be closely related to the married women's participation in the voluntary activities.

  • This article investigates the impacts of firms' regulatory compliance and voluntary innovation activities in environmental management on the development of their organizational capabilities and the enhancement of their performance, within the Korean context. The study invokes a structural equation analysis. The results indicate that voluntary innovation activity in response to market pressures makes a significant contribution to the development of firm-specific organizational capability and the enhancement of firms' performance, but regulatory compliance activity does not significantly affect either organizational capability or performance. This capability was also seen to have implications for firm's performance. This article also suggests several policy implications related to the research.

  • The purpose of this study was to research the effects of socio-demographic factors and values in each group on satisfaction with life by categorizing the activity types of the elderly into volunteer work and economic activities. The subjects of this study were 60 years an old higher. The questionnaires were categorized depending on activity types and collected. The voluntary work group consisted of 201 people (76 males, 36.8% and 125 females, 62.2%), The economic activity group consisted of 219 people (127 males, 58.0% and 92 females, 42.0%). The SPSS 14.0 Windows program was used to analyze data. Frequency, average, standard deviation, factor analysis, Pearson correlation coefficient, t-test, One-Way ANOVA analysis, and hierarchical multiple linear regression were analyzed. The major findings of this study indicate that the elderly in the voluntary work group have a high collectivism value, higher income earned by performing economic activities, and good cognitive health affected by a high satisfaction with life. From these research results, it was proved that a collectivism value is a common factor that affects satisfaction with life in both of the economic activity group. Those who were older had a traditional collectivism value. The voluntary work group showed a stronger collectivism value and higher satisfaction with life than the economic activity group. Thus, the diverse types of voluntary work should be developed and a systematic system should be established as methods for improving quality of life and satisfaction.
