A custom power device provides an integrated solution to the present problems that are faced by the utilities and power distribution. In this paper, a new controller is designed which is connected to a multiconverter unified power quality conditioner (MC-UPQC) for improving the power quality issues adopted modified synchronous reference frame (MSRF) theory with Fuzzy logic control (FLC) technique. This newly designed controller is connected to a source in order to compensate voltage and current in two feeders. The expanded concept of UPQC is multi converter-UPQC; this system has a two-series voltage source inverter and one shunt voltage source inverter connected back to back. This configuration will helps mitigate any type of voltage / current fluctuations and power factor correction in power distribution network to improve power quality issues. In the proposed system the power can be conveyed from one feeder to another in order to mitigate the voltage sag, swell, interruption and transient response of the system. The control strategies of multi converter- UPQC are designed based on the modified synchronous reference frame theory with fuzzy logic controller. The fast dynamics response of dc link capacitor is achieved with the help of Fuzzy logic controller. Different types of fault conditions are taken and simulated for the analysis and the results are compared with the conventional method. The relevant simulation and compensation performance analysis of the proposed multi converter-UPQC with fuzzy logic controller is performed.
Individual DC voltage balance problem is an inherent issue for cascaded H-bridge (CHB) based converter. When the CHB-based static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) is operating at zero current mode, the software-based individual DC voltage balancing control techniques may not work because of the infinitesimal output current. However, the different power losses of each cell would lead to the individual DC voltages unbalance. The uneven power losses on the local supplied cell-controllers (including the control circuit and drive circuit) would especially cause the divergence of individual DC voltages, due to their characteristic as constant power loads. To solve this problem, this paper proposes an adaptive voltage balancing module which is designed in the cell-controller board with small size and low cost circuits. It is controlled to make the power loss of the cell a constant resistance load, thus the DC voltages are balanced in zero current mode. Field test in a 10kV STATCOM confirms the performance of the proposed method.
Direct Power Control technique has become popular in the grid connected Voltage Source Converter (VSC) applications due to its simplicity, direct voltage vector selection and improved dynamic performance. In this paper, a direct method to determine the effect of voltage vector on the instantaneous active and reactive power variations is developed. An alternative Look Up Table is proposed which minimizes the commutations in the converter and results in minimum reactive power variation. The application of suggested table is established for Shunt Active Power Filter (SAPF) application. The Predictive Direct Power Control method, which minimizes apparent power variation, is further investigated to reduce commutations in converters. Both the methods are validated using 2 kVA laboratory prototype of Shunt Active Power Filters (SAPF).

This paper describes a switching-level operation analysis of BTB(Back-To-Back) converter for HVDC(high voltage DC) application based on MMC(modular multi-level converter). A switching-level operation analysis for BTB converter is very important to understand the converter operation in detail and check the voltage and current transients in each components. However, the development of switching-level simulation model for the actual size BTB Converter is very difficult because the MMC normally has more than 150 sub-modules for each arm. So, a switching level simulation model for the 11-level MMC-based BTB converter was developed with PSCAD/EMTDC software, which has 12 sub-modules for the positive arm and another 12 sub-modules for the negative arm. The DC-voltage balance algorithm, the circulating-current reduction algorithm, the harmonic reduction algorithm, and the redundancy operation algorithm were included in this simulation model. The developed simulation model can be utilized to analyze the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application in switching level and to develop the protection scheme for the MMC-based BTB converter for HVDC application.
This paper presents a new control approach of DSTATCOM (distribution static compensator) for compensation of reactive power, unbalanced loading and harmonic currents under unbalanced non-sinusoidal ac mains. The control of DSTATCOM is achieved using Adaline based current estimator based on LMS algorithm to maintain source currents real and undistorted. The dc bus voltage of voltage source converter (VSC) working as DSTATCOM is maintained at constant voltage using a proportional-integral (PI) controller. The DSTATCOM system alongwith proposed control scheme is modeled in MATLAB to simulate the behavior of the system. The practical implementation of the DSTATCOM is carried out using dSPACE DS1104 R&D controller having TMS320F240 as a slave DSP. Simulated and implementation results are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of the DSTATCOM with Adaline based control to meet the severe load perturbations with different types of loads (linear and non-linear) under distorted and unbalanced AC mains.
A hybrid HVDC system that is composed of line commutated converter (LCC) at the rectifier side and voltage source converter (VSC) in series with LCC at the inverter side is studied in this paper. The start-up strategy, DC fault ride-through capability, and fault recovery strategy for the hybrid HVDC system are proposed. The steady state and dynamic performances under start-up, AC fault, and DC fault scenarios are analyzed based on a bipolar hybrid HVDC system. Furthermore, the immunity of the LCC inverter in hybrid HVDC to commutation failure is investigated. The simulation results in PSCAD/EMTDC show that the hybrid HVDC system exhibits favorable steady state and dynamic performances, in particular, low susceptibility to commutation failure, excellent DC fault ride-through, and fast fault recovery capability. Results also indicate that the hybrid HVDC system can be a good alternative for large-capacity power transmission over a long distance byoverhead line.

In this paper, a fault location algorithm using wavelet transform is proposed for HVDC cable lines. The arriving instants of the first and second fault-induced backward travelling waves can be detected by using wavelet transform. The fault distance is estimated by using the time difference between the two instants of backward travelling waves and the velocity of the travelling wave. To distinguish between the backward wave from fault point and the backward wave from the remote end, polarities of backward waves are used. The proposed algorithm is verified varying with fault distances and fault resistances in underground cables of VSC(voltage source converter) HVDC system and CSC(Current Source Converter) HVDC respectively. Performance evaluations of the proposed algorithm shows that it has good ability for a fault location of HVDC cable faults.
This paper deals with an integrated voltage and frequency (VF) controller for isolated asynchronous generators (IAG) driven by a constant power pico-hydro uncontrolled turbine feeding three-phase four-wire loads. The proposed VF controller is used to control the frequency and voltage of an IAG with load leveling. Such a VF controller is also known as an integrated electronic load controller (IELC) which is realized using an isolated star/polygon transformer with a voltage source converter (VSC) and a battery at its DC bus. The proposed generating system with a VFC is modeled and simulated in MATLAB along with Simulink and Simpower system (SPS) toolboxes. The simulated results are presented to demonstrate the performance of an isolated asynchronous generator feeding three-phase four-wire loads with neutral current compensation.
This paper proposes a comparison of Voltage Oriented Control (VOC) and Direct Power Control (DPC) under command mode transition for PMSG Wind Turbines (WT). Based on a neutral point clamped three level back to back type Voltage Source Converter (VSC), proposed control scheme automatically control the generated output power to satisfy a grid requirement from the hierarchical wind farm controller. Automatic command mode transition based on the dc-link voltage error provides a command mode changing between grid command and MPPT mode. It is confirmed through PLECS simulations in Matlab. Simulation result shows that proposed control scheme of VOC and DPC achieves a much shorter transient time of generated output power than the conventional control scheme of MPPT with optimal torque control and VOC under a step response. The proposed control scheme makes it possible to provide a good dynamic performance for PMSG wind turbines in order to generate a high quality output power.
This paper proposes a SSSC(Static Synchronous Series Compensator) power flow model to be incorporated into power flow calculation for the steady state analysis of the power system. SSSC provides controllable compensating voltage, which is in quadrature with the line current, over an capacitive and an inductive range, independently of the magnitude of the line current. This SSSC model is obtained from the injection model for series connected VSC(Voltage Source Converter) by adding a constraint that the injected voltage should be in quadrature with the line current. In this paper the static model is implemented into the continuation power-flow (CPF) program. It is shown that SSSC has its intrinsic superiority over TCSC in controllable power flow range.
