  • Mineral oil has been widely used as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers due to its excellent performance in-service. However, there are few issues with mineral oil such as it has poor biodegradability and could contaminate the environment if a spillage occurs. With the increasing tight regulation on safety and environment, alternative fluids for mineral oil are currently being investigated and among the suitable candidate is the vegetable oil. There are different types of vegetable oils and one of them is the palm based oil. At the moment, extensive research works are carried out to examine its feasibility to be applied in transformers. This paper will review the previous research works that were carried out to examine the suitability of palm based oil as dielectric insulating fluid in transformers. The physical and chemical properties of palm based oil are studied based on viscosity, acidity, oxidation stability and flash point. Next, the electrical characteristics of palm based oil are examined based on AC breakdown voltage, relative permittivity, dissipation factor and partial discharge.

  • A programmable smart charger compatible to various load conditions is proposed in this paper. Since the proposed smart charger is compatible to various mobile devices having different rated voltage and power, it is convenient for carrying and easy to standardize many kinds of battery chargers. Moreover, since it uses the input impedance and built-in PMIC (Power management IC) of the load system to recognize the connection state and specifications of load system, hardware changes of load system is not only hardly necessary but it also features no addition communication cable and easy implementation. To confirm the validity of the proposed charger, the theoretical analysis and experiment results from a prototype compatible to three load conditions 5V/1A, 5V/2A and 12V/1A are provided.

  • Multiple output converters (MOCs) are widely used for applications which require various levels of the output voltages due to their benefits in cost, volume, and efficiency. However, most of the MOCs developed so far can regulate only one output tightly and require as many secondary windings in the transformer as the number of the outputs. In this paper, a novel Time Division Multiple Control (TDMC) method to regulate all the outputs in high precision is proposed and applied for the multiple output battery charger based on the phase shift full bridge topology to charge a multiple number of batteries at one time. The proposed converter can charge three different kinds of batteries or same kind of batteries in different state of charges (SOCs) by using constant current/constant voltage (CC/CV) charge mode independently. At the same time it can provide an even degree of tight regulation for each output to satisfy the strict ripple requirement of the battery. The validity and feasibility of the proposed method are verified through the experiments.

  • In this paper, the elastic epoxy added elastomer having viscoelasticity to existing epoxy was measured thermal, structural properties through TGA(Thermogravimetric Analysis) and FESEM(Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope). Specimens were made of dumbbell forms by the ratio of 5[phr], 10[phr], 15[phr], and 20[phr] by regulation with elastomer contents. The measurement temperature dimensions of TGA were $0[^{\circ}C]\;to\;800[^{\circ}C]$, and rising temperature was $5[^{\circ}C/min]$. And we observed structure through FESEM at the magnification of 1000times with the voltage of 15[kV] after breaking by quenching specimens. As thermal analysis results, we could know that thermal and structural properties was improved quantity according to decrease of elastomer contents. In general, thermal, structural properties of 15[phr] was excellent among the specimens.

  • We have previously shown that 2,4,3',5'-tetramethoxystilbene (TMS), a trans-stilbene analogue, induces apoptosis in human cancer cells. However, the detailed mechanisms of mitochondria-dependent apoptosis induced by TMS are not fully understood. In the present study, the possible roles of annexin A5 in TMS-mediated apoptosis were investigated in MCF7 human breast cancer cells. Quantitative real-time PCR analysis and Western blot analysis showed that the expression of annexin A5 was strongly increased in TMS-treated cells. TMS caused a strong translocation of annexin A5 from cytosol into mitochondria. Confocal laser scanning microscopic analysis clearly showed that TMS induced translocation of annexin A5 into mitochondria. TMS increased the expression and oligomerization of voltage-dependent anion channel (VDAC) 1, which may promote mitochondria-dependent apoptosis through disruption of mitochondrial membrane potential. When cells were treated with TMS, the levels of Bax, and Bak as well as annexin A5 were strongly enhanced. Moreover, we found that the cytosolic release of apoptogenic factors such as cytochrome c, or apoptosis-inducing factor (AIF) in mitochondria was markedly increased. Annexin A5 depletion by siRNA led to decreased proapoptotic factors such as Bax, Bak, and annexin A5. Taken together, our results indicate that annexin A5 may play an important role in TMS-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis through the regulation of proapoptotic proteins and VDAC1 expression.

  • Power systems have uncertain dynamics due to a variety of effects such as lightning, severe storms and equipment failures. The variation of the effective reactance of a transmission line due to a fault is an example of uncertainty in power system dynamics. Hence, a robust controller to cope with these uncertainties is needed. Recently, fuzzy controllers are becoming quite popular for robust control due to its potential of dealing with uncertain systems. Thus in this paper we design an adaptive fuzzy controller based on an input-output linearization approach for the transient stabilization and voltage regulation of a power system under a sudden fault. Also this paper proposes a fuzzy system that estimates the upper bound of uncertain term in the system dynamics to guarantee the Lyapunov stability. Simulation results show that good performance is achieved by the proposed controller.

  • In this study, A Magnetic stimulation Pulse Train control technique is introduced and applied to Flyback converter operating in discontinuous conduction mode. In contrast to the conventional pulse width modulation control scheme, the principal idea of a Magnetic stimulation Pulse Train is to achieve output voltage regulation using high and low power pulses. The proposed technique is applicable to any converter operating in discontinuous conduction. However, this work mainly focuses on Flyback topology. In this paper, the main mathematical concept of the new control algorithm is introduced and simulations as well as experimental results are presented.

  • The last two decades have shown a marked expansion in publications of diverse effects of Panax ginseng. Ginsenosides, as active ingredients of Panax ginseng, are saponins found in only ginseng. Recently, a line of evidences shows that ginsenosides regulate various types of ion channel activity such as $Ca^{2+},\;K^+,\;Na^+,\;Cl^-$, or ligand gated ion channels (i.e. $5-HT_3$, nicotinic acetylcholine, or NMDA receptor) in neuronal, non-neuronal cells, and heterologously expressed cells. Ginsenosides inhibit voltage-dependent $Ca^{2+},\;K^+,\;and\;Na^+$ channels, whereas ginsenosides activate $Ca^{2+}-activated\;Cl^-\;and\;Ca^{2+}-activated\;K^+$ channels. Ginsenosides also inhibit excitatory ligand-gated ion channels such as $5-HT_3$, nicotinic acetylcholine, and NMDA receptors. This review will introduce recent findings on the ginsenoside-induced differential regulations of ion channel activities and will further expand the possibilities how these ginsenoside-induced ion channel regulations are coupled to biological effects of Panax ginseng.

  • Based on liquid-lens technology and our previous findings on the optical model of the Chinese eye, the liquid lens is applied in the research of the crystalline-lens optical model. Theoretical models of three-layer liquid lenses are built with COMSOL software, and the effect of voltage on the shape of the interface between two liquids is analyzed. By polynomial fitting, different equations describing the interface shape are set up under different voltages. Finally, the optical system of the human eye with a three-layer liquid lens is built and analyzed with Zemax optical design software, and moreover the optical system models of emmetropia, myopia, and hyperopia are presented. This method to build a model of the human eye with a variable-focus liquid lens can provide a novel idea for more practical human-eye models for clinical regulation and control in the future.
