  • This study aimed at investigating the effects of grouping participants in pairs according to their relative vocabulary proficiency on the incidental improvement of vocabulary knowledge. Forty six university students were divided into three groups (high-high(n=14), high-low(n=18), or low-low(n=14)) and took part in the study. They performed three vocabulary activities in pairs as extra-class works. Data were collected from one receptive vocabulary knowledge test scores before treatment and two posttest scores after treatment. The results showed that, unlike former study results, HL dyads acquired more vocabulary receptively and productively than HH or LL dyads did, which demonstrated that collaborative pair activity was conducive to the growth of vocabulary knowledge. Furthermore, not only higher proficiency participants in HL pairs made greater vocabulary gains than participants in HH pairs did but also lower proficiency participants gained more vocabulary than participants in LL pairs did. Based on these results, we discussed pedagogical implications.

  • In general, Levenshtein distance algorithm have a problem with not distinguish the consideration of vacabulary retrieve, because Levenshtein methode is used to vocabulary order are not defined. In this paper, we propose a improved Levenshtein methode, it effectively manage the vocabulary retrieve by frequency use of a vocabulary, and it gives the weight number which have a order between vocabularies. Therefore proposed methode have a advantage of solve the defect of perception rate in the case of increase the vocabulary, improve the recognition time become higher and it can be effectively retrieval space management.. System performance as a result of represent vocabulary dependence recognition rate of 97.81%, vocabulary independence recognition rate of 96.91% in indoor environment. Also, vocabulary dependence recognition rate of 91.11%, vocabulary independence recognition rate of 90.01% in outdoor environment.

  • The goal of this paper is to seek an educational method that can cause some communicational improvements to petty officer majoring students through listing and utilizing the academic vocabulary. The academic vocabulary has been listed by using three major steps. The first, the academic vocabulary is needed to extract from the studies based on this field in past 3 years. Second, the academic vocabulary for petty officers is required to compare with high school level of the academic vocabulary. For the last, the academic vocabulary is demanded to be listed for teaching petty officer majoring students. The signification of the academic vocabulary in this study is limited by focusing on the educational skills for writing in petty officer majors. This study presents a way to develop the communicational abilities through using the academic vocabulary into the collaborative learning. For the conclusion, this study presents its limits and further directions.

  • This study analyzed the vocabulary level in the 'Water' unit of chemistry I textbook. It also analyzed its relevance to the 11th graders' vocabulary level. The main tool for analyzing vocabulary level was SWA(Science Word Analysis) program which was referenced the Standard Korean Dictionary and Graduated Vocabulary of Korean Language Education. The results in this study turned out to be as follows: The distribution of scientific vocabulary level increased from Level-1 to Level-3 and showed a tendency to decrease from Level-3 until Level-5. The average percentage of Out of level is the largest as 37%. The highest percentage of non-scientific vocabulary was Level-1. The distribution of non-scientific vocabulary level decreased progressively. The Level-5 and Out of level are used 18% averagely. So, there are 6 vocabularies of Level-5 and 82 vocabularies of extra-level inappropriate in scientific vocabularies. And there are 53 vocabularies of Level-5 and 145 vocabularies of Out of level inappropriate in non-scientific vocabularies. Therefore, the overall state of textbooks for grade 11 students are reasonable. But there are a great many vocabularies inappropriate for them. Those should be used minimum, and to be changed to the 1-4 of level vocabulary as stated in the student's level of understanding of appropriate vocabulary.

  • Objective: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the Power Card strategy on the receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary in children with autism spectrum disorders. Method: Three children with autism spectrum disorder were selected for this study and the power card strategy language intervention was applied, using a multiple baseline design across individuals. The target vocabulary was selected by examining the individual preferred characters. Power cards were constructed, and intervention was applied to improve the receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary through the baseline stage, intervention, and maintenance. Result: The application of the power card strategy showed that the acquisition rate of receptive vocabulary in children with autism spectrum disorder was increased, and expressive vocabulary acquisition rate was also improved. Conclusion: During the intervention period using the power card strategy, the children's target receptive vocabulary and expressive vocabulary acquisition rates improved, and the acquisition rate was maintained, even after the intervention. This suggests that the power card strategy is effective in improving the vocabulary of autistic children with disabilities, of school age.

  • While noticing that there is insufficient interest in the assessment of EFL learners' vocabulary levels or sizes, the researchers developed two tests identical in form (Forms A and B) to assess the lexical knowledge of Korean university learners at the $1^{st}{\sim}10^{th}$ 1,000 word bands by adapting a pre-established vocabulary levels test (VLT). Of equal concern was to investigate if the VLT was equally a valid and reliable instrument to be used on measuring the lexical knowledge of EFL learners. The participants were 804 university freshmen enrolled in a General Education English Course from four different colleges. The learners were asked to respond to either Form A or B. While scores generally fell towards the lower frequency bands, multiple regression found the Korean College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT) to be a significant variable for predicting the learners' vocabulary sizes. From a methodological perspective, however, noticeable differences between Forms A and B could be found with item response theory analysis. The findings of the study provide suggestions on how future VLT for testing EFL learners may have to be redesigned.

  • In this paper, we investigated performance of a vocabulary-independent speech recognizer with speaker adaptation. The vocabulary-independent speech recognizer does not require task-oriented speech databases to estimate HMM parameters, but adapts the parameters recursively by using input speech and recognition results. The recognizer has the advantage that it relieves efforts to record the speech databases and can be easily adapted to a new task and a new speaker with different recognition vocabulary without losing recognition accuracies. Experimental results showed that the vocabulary-independent speech recognizer with supervised offline speaker adaptation reduced 40% of recognition errors when 80 words from the same vocabulary as test data were used as adaptation data. The recognizer with unsupervised online speaker adaptation reduced abut 43% of recognition errors. This performance is comparable to that of a speaker-independent speech recognizer trained by a task-oriented speech database.

  • A sample of 322 18-month-old infants and their mothers were assessed longitudinally at 24 and 30 months. Maternal utterances and styles of linguistic interaction were measured during a 10 minute free play session. Mothers completed a vocabulary checklist for infants. Longitudinal data were analyzed by multilevel modeling. Results indicated that vocabulary increased with age of infants and the growth rate was highly predictable by the size of vocabulary at 18 months. The growth rate was strongly influenced by maternal questioning and feedback. The effect of the maternal linguistic input was constant with age. Gender differences in size of vocabulary did not vary systematically with age.

  • This study examined the relationship between children's temperament and their early vocabulary acquisition. Mothers of 317 toddlers (18 months of age) completed the Toddler Temperament Scale(Bak, 1996) and a vocabulary checklist(Pae, 2002). Results showed that mood, adaptability, and activity were associated with vocabulary acquisition. Specifically, infants rated as having a positive mood and low activity level acquired more expressive words. On the other hands, infants rated as easily adaptive and low activity level acquired more receptive words. These results suggest that different components of temperament may influence the way in which toddlers acquire vocabulary.
