  • There are rarely effective methods to help visually impaired people when they want to know the expiration date of products excepted to only Braille. In this study, we developed an expiration date notification system based on YOLO and OCR for visually impaired people. The handicapped people can automatically know the expiration date of a specific product by using our system without the help of a caregiver, fast and accurately. The proposed system is worked by four different steps: (1) identification of a target product by scanning its barcode; (2) segmentation of an image area with the expiration date using YOLO; (3) classification of the expiration date by OCR: (4) notification of the expiration date by TTS. Our system showed an average classification accuracy of about 86.00% when blindfolded subjects used the proposed system in real-time. This result validates that the proposed system can be potentially used for visually impaired people.

  • This research has been conducted to determine the effect that the visually handicapped's participation in an aerobic exercise program has on cardiorespiratory function and arterial pulse wave. The subjects of this research were 20 people who have a 1st degree visual impairment. They recognized the purpose of this research and agreed to take part in it. After receiving agreements from their guardians, we divided them into an exercise group of 10 and a comparison group of 10 at random. The exercise group conducted a 50-70%HRmax treadmill exercise for 60 minutes a day, five times a week, for 12 weeks, including warm up and warm down exercises. We then conducted a two-way repeated ANOVA, which regards the period of exercise and the two groups as independent variables. The follow-up verification for exercise periods according to each group was carried out with a paired t-test. The statistical significance level was p<.05. The following are the results of this research. First, the weight and body fat of the experiment group after exercise show a meaningful reduction compared to before the exercise program (p<.05).Second, the VO2max, HRmax, and VEmax of the experiment group after exercise show a meaningful increase compared to before the exercise program (p<.05). Third, the arterial pulse wave of the experiment group after exercise display a meaningful increase compared to before the exercise program (p<.05). Fourth, the systolic blood pressure of the experiment group after exercise does not show a meaningful reduction compared to before the exercise program (p>.05). These results prove that the visually handicapped's participation in an aerobic exercise program is effective in the improvement of their cardiorespiratory function, bloodstream circulation function and blood vessel function.

  • Since people with visual impairments are mostly hard to access the Internet they have been neglected from the information-oriented society. Therefore, the contents which consider the web accessibility to readily access to the web by people with visual impairments are an essential component. In this paper, we developed the contents to improve the web accessibility for people with visual impairments. To provide easy access to the web by people with visual impairments, we analyzed the existing web sites for blind people and considered a concise design, and hierarchical structure. Using the PHP, CSS, and Javascript, the necessary functions for the visually handicapped such as focusing, shortcut key, and text equivalent are implemented. The results which are tested by blind users prove the efficiency of the proposed contents.

  • Currently, blind people are experiencing a lot of inconvenience in their daily lives. In order to provide helpful service for the visually impaired, this study was carried out to make a new smart glasses that transmit information monitoring walking environment in real-time object recognition. In terms of object recognition, YOLOv4 was used as the artificial intelligence model. The objects, that should be identified during walking of the visually impaired, were selected, and the learning data was populated from them and re-learning of YOLOv4 was performed. As a result, the accuracy was average of 68% for all objects, but for essential objects (Person, Bus, Car, Traffic_light, Bicycle, Motorcycle) was measured to be 84%. In the future, it is necessary to secure the learning data in more various ways and conduct CNN learning with various parameters using darkflow rather than YOLOv4 to perform comparisons in the various ways.

  • This research evaluates the accessibility of the mobile applications for the South Korean libraries based on the accessibility guideline from the Ministry of Security and Public Administration. In order to enhance the credibility of the evaluation, this current research covers both the accessibility for the visually impaired and the accessibility for the people without disabilities. The research found four main results. First, we found that only 21 libraries (31%) provide alternative texts. Out of the 21 libraries, only one provide alternative texts across all sections of the mobile applications, including the main page, data search, information assistance, etc. Second, most of the mobile applications provide contents in texts, and the subtitles, sign language, blinking and background music provided as required or recommended standard by the guideline lack correlation. Third, alternative texts, focus movement, accessibility of operating system, button motion control, spacing between control and alarm functions must follow the standard guideline for the people with disabilities to use the mobile applications. Fourth, follow-up research on the development of accessibility standard for library mobile application is necessary in order to enable people with disabilities to freely use the library mobile applications.

  • This study observes information education of facilities for the disabled. A certain facility for the disabled was selected in Daejeon to compare the educational environment for visually disabled of regular school for visually disabled and facilities for the disabled, and then personnel current situation by age and form of the disabled, teacher current situation by age, computer possessing current situation, weekly education schedule for the disabled, and equipment possessing current situation for visually disabled were observed. As a result, expansion of Braille education was necessary for the Braille skilled, which is the basis of information education information to visually disabled is insufficient, and forming of learning environment was desperate since equipment necessary for computer education was absurdly lacking unlike regular schools. Also, only 10 out of 21 teachers(47%) majored in social welfare or special education, and none majored in computer. It is because support for employment of those who majored social welfare, special education, and computer is insufficient compared to treatment for teachers at general schools at the facility for the disabled since teacher employment regulation at the facility for the disabled is not set. It is studied that providing high-quality of education environment to the disabled was desperate through physical and social treatment that suits nurturing of the professionally knowledge personnel through expansion of equipments and constant education and training based on government support to promote information education of the facility for the disabled.
