Objective : Radiofrequency (RF) medial branch neurotomy is an effective management of lumbar facet syndrome. However, pain may recur after period of time. When pain recurs, it can be repeated, but the successful outcome and duration of relief from repeated procedures are not clearly known. The objective of this study was to determine the success rate and duration of pain relief from repeated radiofrequency medial branch neurotomy for lumbar facet syndrome. Methods : A retrospective review of medical records was done on 60 consecutive patients, from March of 2006 to February of 2009, who had an initial successful RF neurotomy but subsequently underwent repeated procedures due to recurrence of pain. All procedures were done in carefully selected patients after at least two responsive medial branch nerve blocks. C-arm fluoroscopic guide, impedance, sensory and motor threshold monitoring tools were used for the precise placement of electrodes. Responses of repeated procedures were compared with initial radiofrequency neurotomy for success rates and duration of pain relief. Results : There were 48 females and 12 males. Mean age was 52.4 years (range, 26-83). RF medial branch neurotomy was done on one side in 38 and both sides in 22 patients, each covering at least three segments. Average visual analog scale at last procedure was 6.8. Twelve patients had previous lumbar operations, including 4 patients with instrumentations. Fifty-five patients had two procedures and five patients had three procedures. Mean duration of successful pain relief (> 50% of previous pain for at least 3 months period) after initial radiofrequency neurotomy was 10.9 months (range, 3-28) in 51 (85%) patients. From repeated procedures, successful pain relief was seen in 50 (91%) patients with average duration of 10.2 months (range, 3-24). Five patients had third procedure, which was successful in 4 (80%) patients with mean duration of 9.8 months (range, 5-16). This was not statistically different from initial results. There were no permanent neurological complications from the procedures. Conclusion : Results of this study indicate that the frequency of success and durations of relief from repeated RF medial branch neurotomy for lumbar facet syndrome are similar to initial results that provided relatively prolonged period of pain relief without major side effects Each procedure seems to provide successful pain relief for about 10 months in more than 85% of carefully selected patients when properly done.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of myofascical release (MR) on the degree of pain and nerve conduction velocity (NCV) in middle-aged women. Participants were 28 middle-aged women and MR carried out three times (1, 3, 5 day) at intervals of two times. We did survey about changes of pain before the MR and how they changed after the MR. Also measured pressure pain threshold (PPT) and visual analogue scale (VAS) by using the algometer at trapezius muscle. In median nerve, we did motor nerve conduction velocity (MNCV) test and sensory nerve conduction velocity (SNCV) test for measuring incubation period, amplitude and nerve conduction. The most painful time was 18~21 and the most painful part was shoulder. The pain scale, PPT and VAS after the MR had significantly decreased than before the MR. The latency was significantly decreased and the amplitude was significantly increased in the MNCV and the latency was significantly decreased in the SNCV after the MR. Also it was effective in ameliorating pain scale and latency of NCV. Consequently, the MR can be effective in prevent pain scale caused by fatigue in middle-aged women as replacement therapy.
We have long kept our Cartesian tradition in which Mind privileges over Body; the invention of printing technology has accelerated the tradition in which the intelligence and legibility of media were considered as a higher human value. However, the development of media and technology are supporting the multisensory mechanisms of the body as it was in preliterate era when we communicated with our whole bodily experiences. The development and spread of mass-media and new technologies have broaden the boundary of human sensory that are largely dominated by visual information and expanded it to auditory, olfactory and even gustatory sensation. Since 1960's, some philosophers and artists have recognized the human body as a subjective matter, starting the movement in which the body plays a role as an essential factor in study of human perception and cognition, aesthetics in art, and sociology, and the changed perspectives are practiced vigorously in the field of new media art; the theory of Maurice Merleau-Ponty who clarified the body as a general means for the body's possession of world, so that recognize the importance of cognition of one's body and approved the embodiment could be applied and practiced here. Therefore, we discuss how Merleau-Ponty's philosophical theory can be practiced and how McLuhan's perspective could be applied on the notion of body's extension in media by analysing some new media art cases.
Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate 1) somatotopic arrangement of the second and third fingers in SI area 2) difference of neural activation in the SI area produced by stimulation with different frequencies 3) correlation between the intensity of tactile perception by different stimulus intensity and the level of brain activation measurable by means of fMRI. Background: Somatosensory cortex can obtain the information of environmental stimuli about "where" (e.g., on the left palm), "what" (e.g., a book or a dog), and "how" (e.g., scrub gently or scrub roughly) to organism. However, compared to visual sense, the neural mechanism underlying the processing of specific electrotactile stimulus is still unknown. Method: 10 right-handed subjects participated in this study. Non-painful electrotactile stimuli were delivered to two different finger tips of right hand. Functional brain images were collected from 3.0T MRI using the single-shot EPI method. The scanning parameters were as follows: TR and TE were 3000, 35ms, respectively, flip angle 60, FOV $24{\times}24cm$, matrix size $64{\times}64$, slice thickness 4mm (no gap). SPM5 was used to analyze the fMRI data. Results: Significant activations produced by the stimulation were found in the SI, SII, the subcentral gyrus, the precentral gyrus, and the insula. In all participants, statistically significant activation was observed in the contralateral SI area and the bilateral SII areas by the stimulation on the fingers but ipsilaterally dominant. The SI area representing the second finger generally located in the more lateral and inferior side than that of the third finger across all the subjects. But no difference in brain area was found for the stimulation of the fingers by different frequencies. And two typical patterns were observed on the relationship between the perceived psychological intensity and the amount of voxels in the primary sensory cortex during the stimulation. Conclusion: It was possible to discriminate the representation sites in the SI by electrotactile stimulation of digit2 and digit3. But we could not find the differences of the brain areas according to different stimulation frequencies from 3 to 300Hz. Application: The results of the study can provide a deeper understanding of somatosensory cortex and offer the information for tactile display for blinds.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the functional characteristics of fermented mixed grain beverages obtained using different microbial species and to evaluate their suitability for consumption. Various fermented mixed grain beverages were prepared through fermentation with Aspergillus (A.) oryzae CF1003 (A), A. acidus KACC46420 (B), Rhizopus (R.) delemar KACC46149 (C), R. oryzae KACC45714 (D), R. oryzae KACC46148 (E), A-E mixed strains (F), A. oryzae CF1001 (G), A. acidus CF1005 (H) and A+H mixed strains (I). The visual appearance, flavor, taste, and the antioxidant capacity of each fermented beverage were then assessed. The chromaticity and aesthetic quality of the fermented beverage was measured and all fermented beverages appeared yellow. The C-, G-, H- and I-fermented beverages received scores of 3.319, 3.206, 3.170 and 3.025 points, respectively, following a sensory evaluation, while the others received less than 3 points. The polyphenol content of the different beverages were similar, while the flavonoid content significantly differed. In particular, the flavonoid content of the C- and E-fermented beverages was significantly higher than other beverages. Although the electron donating ability and reducing power of the fermented beverages was very low, the superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity of all beverages (except the E-fermented beverage) increased in a concentration-dependent manner. Specifically, the SOD-like activity from the F-fermented beverage at 10,000 ppm was more than 50%. Interestingly, the antioxidant activities of the beverages were unrelated to their polyphenol or flavonoid levels. This study also found that the aesthetic qualities of G- and H-fermented beverages were the highest and that this was completely independent of their antioxidant capacity. Therefore, our results suggest that further studies are required to develop mixed grain-derived fermented beverages that can also fulfill a useful functional purpose.

Modified atmosphere packaging was applied to oriental melon(Cucumis melo L. var. makuwa Mak.) to extend its freshness during distribution. Gas composition and ethylene content in the film bags changed rapidly at the early stage of storage. Within 10 days, weight loss of the unpackaged increased upto 7.68% while those of the packaged remained less than 1.0% except LDPE film modified by addition of 5%(w/w) zeolite with $20\;{\mu}m$ thickness(20CK, 2.38%). Firmness was effectively maintained in the LDPE film modified by addition of 5%(w/w) zeolite with $40\;{\mu}m$ thickness(40CK) and the LDPE film with $40\;{\mu}m$ thickness containing ethylene absorber sachet(40LP). Peel color of the fruit changed rapidly in control and a little in 40CK. Oriental melon packages using 40CK provided better visual and sensory quality retention compared with others. Results suggested that packaging treatment such as 40CK could be used for extending freshness of oriental melon during transport period at ambient temperature.
Storage quality of minimally processed onion as influenced by hot-water dipping was investigated to examine feasibility of mild heat treatment as efficient post-processing method. fresh onions were peeled, trimmed, and dipped in hot water at various temperatures ($50-80^{\circ}C$) for 1 min. Heat-treated onions were cooled, de-watered, packaged in low density polyethylene (LDPE) film pouches ($63\;{\mu}m\;thickness$), and stored at $10^{\circ}C$. Samples treated at higher temperatures ($70-80^{\circ}C$) showed significant increases in flesh weight loss and discoloration during storage as compared to others. Hot-water dipping remarkably reduced initial microbial load of prepeeled onions, with over 1 log cycle decrease in aerobic bacterial count. After 7 days storage, no significant differences in viable aerobe count were observed among treated and untreated samples, with both showing $10^{6}-10^{7}\;CFU/g$. For sensory attributes including discoloration, wilting, decay, and visual quality, onions treated with hot-water dipping at $60^{\circ}C$ scored highest. Results suggested hot-water dipping at specific condition as practical post-processing treatment could effectively prolong shelf life of minimally processed onion.
Quality changes in fresh-cut potatoes during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ after treatment with low-temperature blanching and antibrowning agents were studied. Fresh-cut potatoes were treated by dipping for 1.5 min in a browning inhibitor solution containing 0.5% (w/v) ascorbic acid, 0.5% (w/v) citric acid, 0.5% (w/v) sodium chloride, 0.1% (w/v) trehalose, and 0.005% (w/v) biotin, at $60^{\circ}C$, with subsequent cooling for 1.5 min and storage at $4^{\circ}C$. The browning properties of fresh-cut potatoes were examined by measurement of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activity and total phenolic content. Changes in quality attributes over a 14-day period were assessed in terms of titratable acidity, pH, water-soluble solid level, and gas analysis at $4^{\circ}C$. During storage, PPO activity increased, with the lowest activity seen after about 7 days of storage. Treatment with antibrowning solution at $4^{\circ}C$ increased visual sensory attributes during storage. Low-temperature blanching in distilled water more effectively inhibited browning compared with exposure to browning inhibitor solution, as assessed after 7 days of storage. Fresh-cut potatoes respired aerobically after different treatments during storage at $4^{\circ}C$.

The aim of this study is to determine the effect of motion sickness on pupil rhythm. Sixteen volunteers of both genders (8 male, 8 female, mean age $25.67{\pm}2.43$ years) experienced VR contents in both 2D and HMD versions for 15 minutes, and their pupillary rhythms were compared. The irregular pattern of the pupillary rhythms, as demonstrated by increasing mean pupil diameter (mPD) and standard deviation of the pupil diameter (sPD), revealed motion sickness after experiencing HMD condition. The pupillary response is strongly related to the cognitive load, and the motion sickness can be interpreted as a change in the cognitive load caused by the increasing volume of visual information that must be processed and the conflict or inconsistency between different sensory modalities. The method proposed in this study could be a non-contact measurement method for the monitoring of motion sickness using a web-camera rather than previous sensor-based methods.
This study aims not only to access the visual thought-oriented approach that has been implemented in established art therapy and education but also to integrate language education and therapeutic approach to support the development of school-age children. Thus, text mining technique was applied to search for areas where different areas of language and art can be integrated. This research was conducted in accordance with the procedure of basic research, preliminary DB construction, text screening, DB pre-processing and confirmation, stop-words removing, text mining analysis and the deduction about the convergent areas. These results demonstrated that this study draws convergence areas related to regional, communication, and learning functions, areas related to problem solving and sensory organs, areas related to art and intelligence, areas related to information and communication, areas related to home and disability, topics, conceptualization, peer-related areas, integration, reorganization, attitudes. In conclusion, this study is meaningful in that it established a framework for designing an activity-centered convergence program of art and language in the future and attempted a holistic approach to support child development.
