The area of discourse analysis has long neglected the value of images as a semiotic resource in communication. This paper suggests that like language, images are rich in meaning potential and are governed by visual grammar structures which can be utilized to decode the meanings of images. Employing a theoretical framework in visual communication, two digital images are examined for their representational and interactive dimensions and the dimensions' relation to the magazine advertisement genre. The results show that the framework identified narrative and conceptual processes, relations between participants and viewers, and symbolic attributes of the images, which all contribute to the sociological interpretations of the images. The identities and relationships between viewers and participants suggested in the images signify desirable qualities that may be associated to the product of the advertiser. The findings support the theory of visual grammar and highlight the potential of images to convey multi-layered meanings.
Visual images are important elements of the communication of environment in secondary school environment textbooks, which dominate classroom approaches to teaching and learning. This study was to analysed the perspectives of pedagogical and social-pedagogic of visual images in 'global warming' unit of six different Korean environment textbooks. Analysis makes use of the dimensions pedagogical functions, content specialization, social-pedagogic relationships, and abstraction of the visual codes. The results showed that most of the visual images in school environment textbooks tend to establish social-pedagogic relationships with students. The results of our study have implications for textbook authors and secondary environment teachers. We suggest that future studies may focus on students' and teacher's interpretation of visual images new secondary environment textbooks.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of the visual evaluation for the Picture image combination of Clothing and Ground. The major finding were as follows ; 1) For the visual evaluation of the Picture image as Clothing variation there were significant differences in all factors 2) For the visual evaluation of the Picture image as Ground variation there were significant differences in Attractiveness Hardness and softness Cuteness Attention Cool and Warm factor 3) For the visual evaluation of the Picture image as Percentage of Clothing there were significant differences in Attractiveness cool and Warm factor. It will Percentage of Clothing there were significant differences in Attractiveness Cool and Warm factor. It will aid in choosing the most beneficial background for any clothing brand. It will enhance the picture images to their full potential in any advertising medium 4) As a result of Regression analysis image effecting on " Preference" is refined-country like harmonious-inharmonious comfortable-uncomfortable beautiful-ugly splendid-dull stable-uneasy live-gentle 5) For the Image effecting on "Harmony" according to clothing image there were significant differences. the results analyzed according to the change of background are as follows. Mdern and strong images formed charming urban and cool visual images with urban and neat artificial backgrounds. Mature images were created with romantic and static artificial backgrounds. Mannish straight and conservative images created charming and rigid visual images in urban and formatted artificial background. Using a white natural background for the urban style created a cool visual image. The use of an interior background lead to warmer images and more defination lines Causal images created a rural and warm image which expressed charm and a soft visual while using a rural and natural background. A most unharmonious and hard image was created when using an urban and formatted artificial background. The coolest visual image was created with a cool and natural background. Feminine and flawless images created urban and neat visual image using an urban and formatted artificial background. The coolest visual image was fresh created with a cool and natural background. natural background.
Mix & Match Visual Image, appearing in T-shirt one-point graphics, is a new visual image emerged as a result of several trends: development of cutting-edge machinery and computer programs, various needs of consumers, and an international trend of fusion concept. Thus, a concrete research of Mix & Match Visual Images is demanding. This paper studies one-point graphic, which appeared in the SamsungDesignNet, Interfashion Planning, and firstviewkorea, with a focus on apparel T-shirt of women's wear and casual wear from 2001 to 2004. The study shows that the most preferred independent visual image in Mix & Match Visual Images is a typography, and next is in the order of marks, symbols, geometric diagrams and abstract shapes, animals and plants, characters, materials, and collages. As Mix & Match of independent visual images was mainly combined typography with other independent visual images, we need to develop more Mix & Match Visual Images using various independent visual images's mix and match. Then, T-shirt will be one of the most representative items in Korean fashion trend that enable consumers to express their characters, escaping from the old-fashioned concept that T-shirt is just a T-shirt.
It has long been speculated that the visual system should use a coding strategy that takes advantage of statistical redundancies in images. But how such a coding strategy should manifest in neural responses has been less clear. Low-level image structure related to the power spectrum of natural images appears to be captured by a hard-wired efficient code in the retina of the fly and precortical structures like the LGN of cats that maximizes information content through the limited capacity channel of the optic nerve. But visual images are typically filled with higher-order structure beyond that captured by the power spectrum and visual cortex is not constrained by the same capacity limits as the optic nerve. Whether and how visual cortex can flexibly code for higher order redundancies is unknown. Here we show using psychophysical techniques that the neural response in early human visual cortex may be modulated by orientation redundancies in images such that a visual feature that is contained within a predictive pattern results in slower reaction times than a feature that deviates from a pattern, suggesting lower neural responses to predictable stimuli in the visual cortex. Our results point to a neural response in early visual cortex that is sensitive to global patterns and redundancies in visual images and is in marked contrast to standard models of cortical visual processing.
This study analyzed the visual images covering 'the changes of weather' in elementary science textbooks by 2007 curriculum revision from a perspective of linguistics. The findings showed that there were inclined to increasing in terms of ideational and textual metafunctions. It meant that the informative images were increased and the form of images became more abstractive. It also showed an increase in terms of interpersonal metafunctions. It was interpreted as decreasing the ratios of images inducing epistemological detachments and increasing images help familiarity and involvement between images and readers. These results showed that the visual images of 'the changes of weather' in 2007 revised elementary science textbook were professionally, technical, and abstractive in terms of the contents and formality. And these trends of images were complemented by the involvement and familiarity of images in the aspect of interpersonal metafunctions.
The demand of image compression is increasing now for the integration of medical images into the hospital information system. Even though the quantitative distortion can be measured from the difference between original and reconstructed images, it doesn't include the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system. In this study, we have evaluated the nonlinear characteristics of human visual system and applied them to the compression of medical images. The distortion measures which reflect the characteristics of human visual system has been considered. This image compression procedure consists of coding scheme using JND (Just Noticeable Difference) curve, polynomial approximation and BTC (Block Truncation Coding). Results show that this method can be applied to CT images, scanned film images and other kinds of medical images with the compression ratio of 5-10:1 without any noticeable distortion.

Conventional stereoscopic (3D) displays using binocular parallax generate unnatural conflicts between convergence and accommodation. These conflicts can affect the observer's ability to fuse binocular images and may cause visual fatigue. In this study, time series changes in visual fatigue and depth sensation when viewing stereoscopic images with changing parallax were examined. In particular, the physiological changes, including the subjective symptoms of visual fatigue, when viewing five parallax conditions, were examined. Then a comparative analysis of the 2D and 3D conditions was performed based on the visual function. To obtain data regarding the visual function, the time series changes in the spontaneous-blinking rate before and during the viewing of 3D images were measured. The time series change results suggest that 2D and 3D images cause significantly different types of visual fatigue over the range of binocular disparity.
