  • The People usually adapt themselves to circumstances and its changes. in some cases they are try to improve it for better comfortable living environment. However various factors such as a building's own character cultual symbolism cause some problems in creating interior environment because of inappropriate visual communication. It is general fact that the problems of visual environment objects have not been solved organically under the total environmental concept. In this paper I try to find out how graphic symbol sign system a visual transfer process between people and phsical environment facts work on creating interior environmental analysis current cases and propose a solution.

A Study on the Guidance Signage System of Outpatient in General Hospital using Spatial Configuration Theory - View from G.D.Weisman's Way-finding Influence Factors (공간구조론을 적용한 종합병원 외래부 유도사인 배치 및 평가에 관한 연구 - G.D.Weisman의 길찾기 요소를 중심으로)

  • Purpose: Signs that are installed at unnoticeable places or that disconnect before the destination can bring errors of location information delivery. Therefore, this study aims to find out the spatial relation between structure of space and signs in the perspective of visual exposure possibility, operating arrangement and assesment by applying spatial structure theory. Methods: Effectiveness of organization of guidance signs was evaluated after the four way-finding factors(Plan Configuration, Sign System, Perceptual Access, Architectural Difference) that G.D.Weisman suggested were interpreted by spatial structure theory(J-Graph analysis, Space Syntax, Visual Graph Analysis) under the premise that it is closely related to the structure of space. Results: 1) Because the south corridor that connects each department of outpatient division is located in the hierarchy center of the space, and walking density is expected to be high, guidance signs need to be organized at the place with high integration value. 2) The depth to the destination space can be estimated through J-Graph analysis. The depth means a switch of direction, and the guidance signs are needed according to the number. 3) According to visibility graph analysis, visual exposure can be different in the same hierarchy unit space according to the shape of the flat surface. Based on these data, location adjustment of signs is possible, and the improvement effect can be estimated quantitatively. Implications: Spatial structure theory can be utilized to design and evaluate sign systems, and it helps to clearly understand the improvement effect. It is desirable to specify design and estimation of sign systems in the order of J-Graph analysis${\rightarrow}$Space Syntax Theory${\rightarrow}$visibility graph analysis.

Sign System of Common Spaces in Nursing Home (노인요양시설 공용생활공간의 안내표식 시스템에 관한 연구)

  • The Sign system of nursing home plays an important role when an elderly adapts to new environment and gets on daily life autonomously. Common living spaces are expecially important in maintaining social nature, adequate signage should be installed to aid them in finding their ways. Sign system is a comprehensive system consisted of various factors. In this research, it has been categorized as signage and cueing. Signage includes text and graphic signs, and cueing consists of floor plan configuration and sensual mechanism of visual, auditory, olfactory senses. Using this framework, held investigation and analysis were held in common area(shared living room, shared dining room, toilet) of 14 Korean, 8 Northern European, and 10 Japanese nursing home facilities. The result revealed that even though sign system should work as a combined unit, each factor was planed without relations to each other and did not perform mutually complementary role. Signage was installed too high, without considering the posture of elderly. Korean facilities used abundant and diverse signage compared to other countries. Japanese nursing home preferred cueing method over signage, and those of Northern Europe used plentiful visual cues such as color and ornaments.

  • The function of image in visual communication is increasing by development of information. It pursuits not only direct and concrete reappearance of information but also infinite possibility of image expression by image. It is also course of future image communication. Therefore, in this paper, if the images which pour out of rapid present society are communication means, it is formed to a point of view that improvement in function of communication will be performed excellently to interaction among consumers by recognizing meaning action process of methods of visual sign about user information processing which perceive Image of visual information.

A Study on the Cartoon Style in Digital Game (디지털 게임에 나타나는 만화적 표현양식 연구)

  • This study finds out the types and meanings of the cartoon style in digital game. First, this study suggests two types, visual sign and aural sign. The cartoon style of visual sign signify denotative means, that helps user's instant gaming experience. Meanwhile the cartoon style of aural sign strengthens user's identity and immersion. Also it delivers background story of the game. These significations implies the semiological meanings of the cartoon style in digital game, and this study comprehensively handles aspects of the user experience in gaming world, too.

  • Domestic sign industry has seen a rapid growth in recent years, however, the level of quality is not so high. The main reason for this is due to the lack of well educated specialists. Thus, in this investigation, we will develop sign design experience software for the experienced employees in sign industry. Especially, focusing on the indoor letter information, we will develop the software that can provide the graphic effect associated with letter information. First, current situation and preliminary study in sign system used in public information were conducted, then design elements were analyzed from this. Then, experiments were performed on teh analyzed elements, and evaluation methods for the sign design were determined. Experiments including typography, color, layout, line alignment, letter space, and line space were conducted to analyze the visual perception. From these experiments, effective elements can be extracted and used as a elements for sign design software. As a next step, we will propose the development of experience software in sign design that can help to determine the sign elements. Thus, our investigation will provide sign design experience software that can be used by any inexperienced individuals, and be a great help for the more effective sign planning.

  • Considering the present outdoor environment of city landscapes, the improvement of well-formed street landscapes is a very important issue in Korea. At this point of time, it is very meaningful to understand the sign design and the planning condition of buildings and examine various problems about this and the possibilities for improvement. Thus the purpose of this study is to accumulate basic data to establish design guideline and visual factors for the sign design for useful environment. The conclusions of this study are as follows: to understand the factors of sign designs is through survey and analysis of building condition and city landscape. Planning factors for outdoor advertising design should be developed systematically and more fit to the street environment and designers in the aspect of control and guidance.

  • Sign languages, commonly used in aurally challenged communities, are a kind of visual language expressing sign words with motion. Spatiality and motility of a sign language are conveyed mainly via sign words as predicates. A predicate is modified by an adverbial phrase with an accompanying change in its semantics so that the adverbial phrase can also affect the overall spatiality and motility of expressions of a sign language. In this paper, we analyze the semantic features of adverbial phrases which may affect the motion-related semantics of a predicate in converting expressions in Korean into those in a sign language and propose a system that generates corresponding animation by utilizing these features.
