  • The purpose of the study was to reveal the effects of visual organizer types and cognitive styles in electronic text understanding. 126 graduate students were divided into a field-dependent group and a field-independent group, and then assigned to two different types of web- based instruction programs which included visual organizers of 'reduction' type and 'abstraction' type. Regarding the comprehension of contents, there were no significant effects of visual organizer types and cognitive styles. However, it was revealed that there were significant interaction effects between visual organizer types and cognitive styles on the awareness of structure in electronic texts. That is to say, while Type 2 ('abstraction' type) was more effective to field-dependent learners, Type 1 ('reduction' type) was more effective to field-independent learners in awareness of structure in electronic texts.

  • In the digital media era, coded and non-coded communication are used to convey the message. As the computer interface has been adopted human communication methods, non-coded communication has bee used in the computer interface as well. The changes of message structure in the computer interface have an effect on shifting the way of user's message acceptance from passive to active. The recently developed computer user interfaces are for user to experience diverse visual effect The communication conveyed with this visual effects could be vague but user can conceive strong impact. This experience is understood not only through the visual experience from a monitor screen but also with a sense of tactile. The meaning of sensual and spectacle motion image could be ambiguous. However in the experience of using an interface, it plentifully expands the human sense by giving a visual experience on a whim. The sensually extemporaneous and splendid visual effect that has vague meaning has been very common happening in digital media environment.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate age-related differences in stepping behavior in response to sensory perturbations of postural balance. The participants for this study were 2 healthy elderly adults (mean age=76.0) and 2 younger adults (mean age=25.5). Subjects were asked to step over a 10 cm high obstacle at self-paced speed with the right limb to land on the primary target (normal step length) that is 10 cm in diameter. However, if, during movement, the light was illuminated, then the subject had to step on the secondary target (long step length). It was planned that the onset of the light would be prior to peak Fx of swing limb, between swing peak Fx and swing toe-off, and after swing toe-off. In the younger adults these secondary visual cues were provided at mean times of 240 ms (standard deviation (SD)=11), 402 ms (SD=13), and 476 ms (SD=88) following the movement onset. Corresponding mean times for the healthy elderly were 150 ms (SD=67), 352 ms (SD=39), and 562 ms (SD=115). Results showed great changes in both group and visual cue condition in Fx ground reaction forces and temporal events following the swing toe-off. Swing limb acceleration force (Fx) and stance peak Fx1 was much greater in the young adults compared to the older adults. Both young and older adults increased stance peak Fx2 in the visual cue condition compared to normal stepping. There was no difference in stance peak Fx2 between the visual cue conditions in both groups. Similarly, the time to stance peak Fx2 was much longer for the visual cue condition than for the normal stepping. It was not different between the visual cue conditions in the young adults, but in the elderly mid and late cue was much greater than early cue. In addition, time to stance peak Fx2 and swing and stance time were much longer in the older adults compared to the young adults for the visual cue conditions. These results suggest that unlike young adults, elderly adults did not flexibly modify their responses to unexpected changes in step length while stepping over obstacles.

  • Objective:Event-related potentials(ERPs) are electrical changes recorded at the surface of the scalp in response to stimulus presentation, and their latency and amplitude change according to cognitive processes. Through past studies of the auditory ERP in schizophrenia, the P300 has been reported to be statistically smaller and delayed in schizophrenia than comparison groups. However, studies of the visual ERP have not been systematically examined. The present study was designed to investigate the visual P300 in patients with schizophrenia and normal controls and to compare the pattern of P300 between them. Methods:The subjects were composed of patients(N=22) with schizophrenia by DSM-IV and normal controls(N=22). The visual ERPs were measured by the visual continuous performance test. P300 amplitude and latency measured on 5 scalp electrodes(Fz, Cz, Pz, $T_7$, $T_8$) were compared between patients and controls. Results:The P300 latencies measured on Fz, Cz, Pz, and $T_7$ electrodes were significantly longer in patients than controls(p<0.05). The P300 amplitudes in patients were smaller than controls. However, the difference between them was not statistically significant. Conclusion:Analysis of the visual ERPs showed that the P300 latency is significantly delayed and the P300 amplitude is slightly smaller in patients than controls. These results are similar to established studies of the auditory P300 in schizophrenia.

  • In this study, the characteristics of visually impaired elementary students' conceptions on dissolution were investigated. The semi-structured interviews about phenomenon of dissolution, uniformity of solution, conservation of mass on dissolving and volume change during dissolving were conducted with 4 fifth-grade elementary students with visual impairments (three were blind, and one had low-vision). Interviews were recorded and the data were analyzed after transcription. As a result, students with visual impairments knew well about the phenomenon of dissolution, uniformity of solution, and conservation of mass on dissolving, while they couldn't explain volume change during dissolving. Although students with visual impairments were found to have similar level of understanding with students without visual impairments, they had sounder understanding about uniformity of solution. However, students with visual impairments had superficial understanding based on phenomenal experiences. Some of students with visual impairments tried to give micro-level explanation. Based on these results, educational implications were discussed.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of exercise intervention combined with 3D visual feedback and motion observation on postural alignment and cerebral cortical activity in subjects with forward head posture (FHP). Methods : The study included 28 participants with FHP, randomly divided into a 3D visual feedback plus motion observation group (n=14) or control group (n=14). The experimental group received corrective exercise combined with 3D visual feedback and motion observation for FHP, three times a week for four weeks. We examined cervical spine radiographs in the lateral standing position with both arms crossed to measure the craniovertebral angle (CVA) and cervical lordosis (CL). Relative alpha (RA) and beta waves (RB) were measured by wireless dry EEG. Results : The CVA value was significantly different between the groups, and the CL value was significantly different only in the experimental group. RA and RB values were not significantly different before and after intervention in the control group. RB values were significantly decreased before and after intervention in the experimental group. Conclusion : Based on the results of this study, we suggest that interventions combined with motion observation and 3D visual feedback may be effective as exercise methods to improve postural alignment and cerebral activity in subjects with FHP. Further research is required to generalize our results on technical supplementation complemented with 3D visual feedback devices.

  • This study aims to compare the performance of syllable identification task according to auditory and visual stimuli presentation methods and syllable position. Twenty-two typically developing children (age 4-6) participated in the study. Three-syllable words were used to identify the first syllable and the final syllable in each word with auditory and visual stimuli. For the auditory stimuli presentation, the researcher presented the test word only with oral speech. For the visual stimuli presentation, the test words were presented as a picture, and asked each child to choose appropriate pictures for the task. The results showed that when tasks were presented visually, the performances of phonological awareness were significantly higher than in presenting with auditory stimuli. Also, the performances of the first syllable identification were significantly higher than those of the last syllable identification. When phonological awareness task are presented by auditory stimuli, it is necessary to go through all the steps of the speech production process. Therefore, the phonological awareness performance by auditory stimuli may be low due to the weakness of the other stages in the speech production process. When phonological awareness tasks are presented using visual picture stimuli, it can be performed directly at the phonological representation stage without going through the peripheral auditory processing, phonological recognition, and motor programming. This study suggests that phonological awareness skills can be different depending on the methods of stimulus presentation and syllable position of the tasks. The comparison of performances between visual and auditory stimulus tasks will help identify where children may show weakness and vulnerability in speech production process.

  • This study divides the expression techniques of Zaha Hadid into various types who has manipulated her targeted drawings as her unique design tools in the process of architectural design, analyzes them in terms of the vanishing point, visual point for observation and object of observation and attempts to figure out how the multi-visual expression is applied in the conception of form and space and method of observation. By doing so, this study will suggest the characteristics of the expression techniques using multi-visual. Through the above study, the utilization and characteristics of multi-visual expression of the architecture design process of Zaha Hadid are summarized as follows. Firstly, Zaha Hadid utilizes the strained multi-visual perspective technique which can look out over the interaction between masses simultaneously at multi-angles by changing a perspective drawing of vanishing point 1, 2, and 3. Secondly, it utilizes a landscape perspective technique and embodies an Idea of landscape's spatial arrangement through it as the means to search a dynamic relation of architecture, city, land, and space. Thirdly, there is a projected expression using X-ray perspective technique to make the relations between inside and outside of building to three-dimension volume. Zaha Hadid has used the expression techniques using multi-visual by utilizing various points and has developed and used them as her creative tools for idea. By means of escaping from the expression techniques of simple revival, she has used a new expression technique that can represent recognized space. In the past, the content could change the expression techniques in architecture; however, the liberation of architectural expression techniques can change the content in modern times when require new attempts.

  • In this study, I examined the psychological visual effect and clothes preference by clothes designs for the mid-aged Korean and American women's somatotypes. The psychological visual effects of each somatotypes' clothes are like these. First, the primary factors for psychological visual effect were analyzed into 5, neat, feminine, polished, modern and active. Second, in thin somatotype, Korean evaluated that china collar and V-neckline are the least feminine, and stand collar is the most polished and the modernest. American evaluated that V-neckline is the most feminine, and tailored collar is the modernest. It shows that there's the difference of culture. In standard somatotype, Korean thought stand collar with pants is the neatest, but tailored collar and china collar with pants are not neat. Contrary, they thought tailored collar with skirt is the neatest and stand collar with skirt is not neat. American thought tailored collar with skirt is the neatest and modernest. The neat visual effects are evaluated differently according to the clothes' styles of bottom. In obesity, Korean evaluated that tailored collar with skirt is the neatest and modernest, but stand collar with skirt is not modern. Stand collar with pants is the modernest, but tailored collar with pants is the least modern and active. American evaluated that round neckline with pants is not neat, modern and active, and round neckline with skirt is the modernest and the most active. So neckline's visual effects are differently showed by culture and the clothes' styles of bottom.

  • Visual Object Query language(VOQL) proposed recently is a visual object-oriented database query language which can effectively represent queries on complex structured data, since schema information is visually included in query expressions. VOQL, which is a graph-based query language with inductively defined semantics, can concisely represent various text-based path expressions by graph, and clearly convey the semantics of complex path expressions. however, the existing VOQL assumes that all the attributes are multi-valued, and cannot visualize the concept of binding of object variables. therefore, VPAL query expressions are not intuitive, so that it is difficult to extend the existing VOQL theoretically. In this paper, we propose VOQL that improved on these problems. The improved VOQL visualizes the result of a single-valued attribute and that of a multi-valued attribute as a visual element and a subblob, respectively, and specifies the binding of object variables by introducing visual variables, so that the improved VOQL intuitively and clearly represents the semantics of queries.
