This paper is concerned with a new concept for the damper without neither a coil spring nor fluid. The new damper concept consists of the permanent magnets and the cylinder of the conducting material. The opposite pole magnets produces the repulsive forces and this is substituted for the coil spring. The relative motion between the magnets and conducting cylinder produces eddy currents thus resulting in the electromagnetic force, which turns out to be the damping force and is substituted for a damping fluid. This damper is called the eddy current damper(ECD). The important advantage of the proposed ECD is that it does not require any damping fluid and any external power and is non-contacting and relatively insensitive to temperature. In the present study, the proposed ECD was constructed and the experiments were performed to investigate its dynamic characteristics. The experiments shows that the proposed ECD has the excellent damping ability.

Under magnetism , as the magneticfluid is being itself magnetized, increase the apparent viscosity because of its body force and has the magnetic characteristics in response ot magnetism, the magnetic fluid is getting attention in various field. The magnetic fluid has the fluidity, which is a special characteristics of fluid and the magneticism , which is a special one of solid. Using this characteristics, this study has been proceeded to show the basic data for developing of a viscous damper with magnetism fluid as hydraulic fluid. Experimental study shows that the application of magnetic field is effective reducing the resonance characteristics of the spring-mass system.

In this paper, a simplified model is studied to predict analytically the radiated noise from the helical gear system due to an axial excitation of helical gear. The simplified model describes gear, shaft, bearing, and housing. To obtain the axial force of helical gear, mesh stiffness is calculated in the load deflection relation. The axial force is obtained from the solution of the equation of motion, using the mesh stiffness. It is used as a longitudinal excitation of the shaft, which in turn drives the gear housing through the bearing. In this study, the shaft is modeled as a rod, while the bearing is modeled as a parallel spring and damper only supporting longitudinal forces. The gear housing is modeled as a clamped circular plate with viscous damping. For the modeling of this system, transfer function from the shaft to the clamped plate are used, using a spectral method with four pole parameters. Out-of-plane displacement for the thin circular plate with viscous damping is derived and sound pressure radiated from the plate is also derived. Using the model, parameter studies are carried out.

The aim this study is to provide fundamental informations for the development of magneticfluid damper. To achieve the aim. the damping effect of magneticfluid is investigated by experiments that the diameter of inner circular bar and the input amplitude vary in the magnetic field generated by the permanent magnet and the electromagnet. From the study, the following conclusive remarks can be made. As the diameter of inner circular bar and the input amplitude increase. the damping effect is improved. And we can know that as the contact area between inner circular bar and magneticfluid increases, damping ratio is improved. Also we consider the cases that there is magnetism generated by electromagnet and DC voltage is supplied to electromagnet from 10V to 50V by 10V. In these cases, the amplitude ratio decreases sharply from 1.8 1.0 And for these cases, the damping ratio is .745.

This work analytically investigated the radiated noise of a helical gear-housing system due to the excitation of helical gears. The helical gears were modeled as a 12-degree of freedom mass-spring-damper system; the shaft was modeled as a rod, a beam, and a torsional shaft; and the gear housing was modeled as a clamped circular plate with viscous damping. The modeling of this system used transfer matrices for helical gears, shafts, and bearings. Damping for both the bearings and the plate were obtained by modal testing. For the evaluation of noise, sound pressure from the plate due to the force and the moment in both radial and tangential directions was analytically derived by the Rayleigh integral. The analytical derivation and parameters from the experiment were applied to an analysis of noise for the two sets of helical gears with differing gear ratios. The analysis showed that the moment excitation in both helical gears contributed more to the noise of the plate than axial force excitation.

A probabilistic optimum design method of the base isolation system consisting of linear spring, viscous damper and frictional element is presented. For the probabilistic approach, the base excitation is assumed to be a stationary Gaussian filtered random process. For optimum design, the objective function and constraints are derived based on the stochastic responses of the system. As a numerical example, the optimum design problem of a three-story base isolated shear type structure is formulated and solved by the sequential quadratic programming method. As a result, the effects of variation of design variables such as parameters of the base isolation system and the mass of base on the objective function and constraints are investigated and the optimum parameters of the base isolation system under study are derived.

In a high-speed press, numerous moving links are interconnected and each link executes a constrained motion at high speed. As a consequence, high-level dynamic unbalance force and unbalance moment are transmitted to the main frame of the press, which results in unwanted vibration and significantly degrades manufacturing accuracy. Dynamic unbalance force and unbalance moment inevitably transmits high-level vibrational force to the foundation on which the press is installed. Minimizing the vibrational force transmitted to the foundation is critical for the protection of both the operators and the surrounding structures. The whole task should be carried out in two steps. The first step is to reduce dynamic unbalance based upon kinematic and dynamic analyses. The second step is to design and build an optimal vibration isolation system minimizing the vibrational force transmitted to the foundation. Firstly, the dynamic design method is presented to reduce dynamic unbalance force and moment. For this a 3D CAD software was utilized and a computer program was written to compute dynamic unbalance force and moment. Secondly, the design method for vibration isolation system is presented. The method for designing coil springs and viscous dampers are explained in detail.

In this paper, a new modeling of a fine actuator for an optical pick-up has been proposed and multiobjective optimization of the actuator has been performed. The fine actuator is constituted of the bobbin which is supported by wire suspension, the coils which wind around the bobbin, and the magnets which cause the magnetic flux. If current flows in the coils, magnetic force is so produced as to be balanced with spring force of wire, so the bobbin is pisitioned. In this model the transfer function from input voltage to output displacementof bobbin has been obtained so that we can describe this integrated system with electromagnetic and mechanical parts. Wire suspension is regarded as a continuous Euler beam, damper as distributed viscous damping, and bobbin as a rigid body which can move up- and down- ward motion only. According to the model, the high frequency dynamic characteristics of the fine actuator can be known and the effect of damping can be investigated while the conventional second order model cannot. In multiobjective optimization, two objective functions have been chosen to maximize the fundamental frequency and the sensitivity with respect to the input voltage of the actuator so that Pareto's optimal solutions have been obtained using .epsilon.-constraint method. These objective functions will satisfy the trends which will enhance the access speed and reduce the tracking error in the optical pick-up technology of next generation. In the result of optimization, we obtain the designs of the optical pick-up fine actuator which has high speed, high sensitivity and low resonant peak. Furthermore, we offer the relation between two object functions so that the designer can make easy choice.

Using the model, parameter studies are carried out. As a result, the linearized dynamic shaft force due to the gear excitation in the frequency domain was proposed. Out-of-plan displacement from the forced vibrating circular plate and the renewed mode normalization constant of the circular plate were also proposed. In order to control the axial vibration of the helical gear system, the plate was more important than the shaft and the bearing. Finally, the effect of the dominant design parameters for the gear system can be investigated by this model.

In order to compute the forces which are transmitted through rubber bushings with a commercial multibody dynamic analysis (MBDA) program, a rubber bushing model is needed. The rubber bushing model of MBDA programs such as DADS or ADAMS is the Voigt model which is simply a parallel spring-viscous damper system, meaning that the damping force of the Voigt model is proportional to the frequency. However, experiments do not necessarily support this proportionality. Alternatively, the viscoelastic characteristics of rubber bushings can be better represented by the complex stiffness. The purpose of this paper is to develop a viscoelastic rubber bushing model for the MBDA programs. Firstly, a methodology is proposed to calculate the complex stiffness of rubber bushings considering static and dynamic load conditions. Secondly, a viscoelastic rubber bushing model developed which uses standard elements provided by DADS. The proposed methods are applied to the rubber bushings of the lower control arms of a rear suspension of a 1994 Ford Taurus model. Then, the forces computed for the rubber bushing model are analyzed and compared with the Voigt model in time and frequency domains.
