This paper mainly deals with the performance evaluation of 33 asphalt sections of Korea Expressway Corporation Test Road (KECTR) during the past four years. Since the construction of the KECTR in December 2002, key performance indicators of asphalt pavements have been collected five times with an Automatic Road Analyzer (ARAN), and have been analyzed for permanent deformation, surface distress, and road roughness. Linear viscoelastic characteristics of four dense graded HMAs used in KECTR were investigated with a series of complex modulus test. The effect of air void in HMAs on dynamic modulus was investigate at two air void contents for a surface course HMA (19 mm Nominal Maximum Size of Aggregate). Layer densification due to traffic was estimated from air void contents of field cored samples, and was correlated with pavement distresses and performances. One of findings of this study was that both permanent deformation and cracking were suspectible to pavement temperatures, rather than traffic. However, it was found that road roughness was mostly affected by traffic loading.

A specially designed flat plate was mounted vertically over the axial line in the wind tunnel of the Pusan National University. Strain balances were mounted in the trailing part of the plate to measure the skin friction drag over removable insertions of $0.55{\times}0.25m^2$ size. A set of the insertions was designed and manufactured: 3 mm thick polished metal surface and three compliant surfaces. The compliant surfaces were manufactured of a silicone rubber Silastic$^{(R)}$ S2 (Dow Corning company). To modify the viscoelastic properties of the rubber, its composition was varied: 90% rubber + 10% catalyst (standard), 92.5% + 7.5% (weak), 85% + 15% (strong). Modulus of elasticity and the loss factor were measured accurately for these materials in the frequency range from 40 Hz to 3 kHz. The aging of the materials (variation of their properties) for the period of one year was documented as well. Along with the drag measurement using the strain balance, velocity and pressure were measured for different coating. The strong compliant coating achieved 5% drag reduction within a velocity range $20{\sim}40$ m/s while standard and weak coatings increased drag reduction.

Mucilage containing ${\gamma}-polyglutamic$ acid (PGA) was efficiently generated by the solid-state fermentation (SSF) of soybean grit by Bacillus firmus NA-1. B. firmus NA-1 was shown to be a glutamate-dependent strain for PGA production. The SSF of soybean grit was optimized in order to produce mucilage with a fortification of 5% glutamate, resulting in higher levels of mucilage production (6.14%) and a higher consistency index ($1.1\;Pa\;sec^n$). The sticky mucilage was comprised of 38% PGA, 7% levan, and some biopolymers. With regard to the viscoelastic properties of the mucilage solution, the viscous modulus (G") obtained from soybean grit fortified with 5% glutamate was approximately 64 times higher titan that of the mucilage solution obtained without glutamate. Although the addition of glutamate in the SSF of soybean grit influenced the rate of PGA production, the molecular weight of PGA remained unaltered, and was detected in a range between 1,400-1,440 kDa.
We investigated complex damped modes in beams in the presence of a viscoelastic layer sandwiched between two elastic layers. The problem was solved using two approaches, (1) Rayleigh beam theory and analyzed using the Ritz method, and (2) by using 2D plane stress elasticity based finite-element method. The damping in the layers was modeled using the complex modulus. Simply-supported, cantilever, and viscously supported boundary conditions were considered in this study. Simple trigonometric functions were used as admissible functions in the Ritz method. The key idea behind sandwich structure is to increase damping in a beam as affected by the presence of a highly-damped core layer vibrating mainly in shear. Different assumptions are utilized in the literature, to model shear deformation in the core layer. In this manuscript, we used FEM without any kinematic assumptions for the transverse shear in both the core and elastic layers. Moreover, numerical examples were studied, where the base and constraining layers were also damped. The loss factor was calculated by modal strain energy method, and by solving a complex eigenvalue problem. The efficiency of the modal strain energy method was tested for different loss factors in the core layer. Complex mode shapes of the beam were also examined in the study, and a comparison was made between viscoelastically and viscously damped structures. The numerical results were compared with those available in the literature, and the results were found to be satisfactory.

Thickness of damping layer in sandwich plate needs to be optimized in order to make modal loss factor of the sandwich plate maximum. Since previous studies were interested in noise reductions over high frequency range, the modal properties were derived based on simply supported boundaries. This conventional formula is approximately applicable to other boundary conditions over high frequency range only. The purpose of this study is to propose a method to determine optimum damping layer thickness of sandwich plate for maximum modal damping in low frequency range when the boundary condition is not a simple support. The conventional RKU equation based on simply supported boundary is modified to reflect other boundary conditions and the modified RKU equation is subsequently applied to determine the optimum damping layer thickness for arbitrary conditions. In order to reflect frequency-dependent characteristics of elastic modulus of the damping layer, an iteration method is proposed in determining the modal properties. Test results on sandwich plates for optimum damping layer thickness are compared with predictions by the proposed method and conventional method.
Results of isothermal torsional oscillation tests are reported on melts of linear low density polyethylene and isotactic polypropylene. Prior to rheological tests, specimens were annealed at various temperatures ranging from $T_a$ = 180 to $310^{\circ}C$ for various amounts of time (from 30 to 120 min). Thermal treatment induced degradation of the melts and caused pronounced decreases in their molecular weights. With reference to the concept of transient networks, constitutive equations are developed for the viscoelastic response of polymer melts. A melt is treated as an equivalent network of strands bridged by junctions (entanglements and physical cross-links). The time-dependent response of the network is modelled as separation of active strands from and merging of dangling strands with temporary nodes. The stress-strain relations involve three adjustable parameters (the instantaneous shear modulus, the average activation energy for detachment of active strands, and the standard deviation of activation energies) that are determined by matching the dependencies of storage and loss moduli on frequency of oscillations. Good agreement is demonstrated between the experimental data and the results of numerical simulation. The study focuses on the effect of molecular weight of polymer melts on the material constants in the constitutive equations.
PTT[poly(trimethylene terephthalate)] fiber was annealed by passing on the plate heater to illuminate the effects of annealing on the mechanical properties and dyeability with varying the treatment temperature for 0.5 second. The apparent crystal sizes and crystallinity were increased with increases in temperature. With the increases of the temperature, the dynamic viscoelastic behaviors were analyzed to be reduction in $T_{max} (tan{\delta})$. The initial modulus were observed to be a small enhanced. The shrinkage in hot water were reduced. The dyeability for disperse dye enhanced dramatically, for example, a satisfactory degree of exhaustion was obtained by dyeing at $95^\circ{C}$ for 30 min with the PTT fibers heat treated at $180^\circ{C}$.

Electro-Rheological(ER) fluids undergo a phase-change when subjected to an external electic field, and this phase-change typically manifests itself as a many-order-of-magnitude change in the rheological behavior. This phenomenon permits the global stiffness and energy- dissipation properties of the beam structures to be tuned in order to synthesize the desired vibration characteristics. This paper reports on a proof-of-concept experimental investigation focussed on evaluation the vibration properties of hollow cantilevered beams filled with an ER fluid. and consequently deriving an empirical model for predicting field-dependent vibration characteristics. A hydrous-based ER fluid consisting of corn starch and silicone oil is employed. The beams are considered to be uniform viscoelastic materials and modelled as a viscously-damped harmonic oscillator. Natural frequency, damping ratio and elastic modulus are evaluated with respect to the electric field and compared among three different beams: two types of different volume fraction of ER fluid and one type of different particle concentration of ER fluid by weight. Transient and forced vibration responses are examined in time domain to demonstrate the validity of the proposed empirical model and to evaluate the feasibility of using the ERfluid as an actuator in a closed-loop control system.
Clay suspensions in liquid polymers exhibit a time-dependent behaviour that includes viscoelastic as well as thixotropic features. Because of the presence of interacting clay platelets, particulate networks can develop, which are broken down during flow and rebuild upon cessation of the flow. Here, the use of thixotropic techniques in probing flow-induced structures in nanocomposites is explored with data on a hectorite-poly(isobutylene) model system. By means of fast stress jump measurements the hydrodynamic contributions to the steady state stresses are determined as well as those caused by the stretching of the clay floes. Flow reversal measurements do not provide a clear indication of flow-induced anisotropy in the present case. The recovery of the clay microstructure upon cessation of flow is followed by means of overshoot and dynamic measurements. The development of a particulate network is detected by the appearance and growth of a low frequency plateau of the storage moduli. The modulus-frequency curves after various rest times collapse onto universal master curves, regardless of the pre-shear history or temperature. The scaling factors for this master curve are the crossover parameters. The crossover moduli are nearly a linear function of the crossover frequency, the relation being identical for recovery after shearing at different shear rates. This function depends, however, on temperature.
