  • As the era of metaverse approaches, there are challenges that need to be solved. Among them, 'cyber motion sickness' is a representative problem from 2016;when VR technology began to attract attention. According to the theory of sensory conflict, motion sickness is caused when the perceived direction of motion information and the expected value are not the same. The paper was written to theoretically explore the relationship between brain cognition and cyber motion sickness, and to prove the effect of user immersion on motion sickness symptoms based on this. Through the SSQ experiment, it was found that the rotation value of the camera aggravates the symptoms of cyber motion sickness and can alleviate cyber motion sickness by increasing the immersion of the game by giving the viewer visual and shift missions to solve. This study was conducted to solve the problem of cyber motion sickness during the process of developing the VR rhythm game "beatale", and it is expected to be the basis for improving cyber motion sickness not only in the development of the project but also in the production of VR contents in the future.

  • Augmented Reality (AR) overlays virtual information on real world data, such as displaying useful information on videos/images of a scene. This paper presents an Enhanced AR (EAR) system that displays useful statistical players' information on captured images of a sports game. We focus on the situation where the input image is degraded by strong sunlight. Proposed EAR system consists of an image enhancement technique to improve the accuracy of subsequent player and face detection. The image enhancement is followed by player and face detection, face recognition, and players' statistics display. First, an algorithm based on multi-scale retinex is proposed for image enhancement. Then, to detect players' and faces', we use adaptive boosting and Haar features for feature extraction and classification. The player face recognition algorithm uses boosted linear discriminant analysis to select features and nearest neighbor classifier for classification. The system can be adjusted to work in different types of sports where the input is an image and the desired output is display of information nearby the recognized players. Simulations are carried out on 2096 different images that contain players in diverse conditions. Proposed EAR system demonstrates the great potential of computer vision based approaches to develop AR applications.

  • The purpose of this paper is to explain the recipient's psychology, which results from the operation of media, from the perspective of the fluctuation between immersion and contemplation. Media allow to perceive and speculate about specific objects or meanings. In addition, the media perform the function of expanding or changing the objects of perception and thought. McLuhan or Luhmann's media theory emphasized this function of changing the state of perception by inducing a contemplative attitude. This notion is exemplified by interpretation of the visual media history. In this paper, the cases of film and computer game are discussed. In particular, it is considered that VR media causing strong immersion have also developed in a way that allows recipients to contemplate an virtually constructed reality. The commercialization of Tilt Brush and the experimentation of VR painting artwork are the examples for this dual development.

  • A GUI (graphical user interface) has been a dominant platform for HCI (human computer interaction). A GUI - based interaction has made computers simpler and easier to use. The GUI - based interaction, however, does not easily support the range of interaction necessary to meet users' needs that are natural. intuitive, and adaptive. In this paper, the modified BMA (block matching algorithm) is proposed to track a hand in a sequence of an image and to recognize it in each video frame in order to replace a mouse with a pointing device for a virtual reality. The HCI system with 30 frames per second is realized in this paper. The modified BMA is proposed to estimate a position of the hand and segmentation with an orientation of motion and a color distribution of the hand region for real - time processing. The experimental result shows that the modified BMA with the YCbCr (luminance Y, component blue, component red) color coordinate guarantees the real - time processing and the recognition rate. The hand tracking by the modified BMA can be applied to a virtual reclity or a game or an HCI system for the disable.

  • In order to use the VR HMD, operation through separate controllers in both hands is required. Methods for text input in VR include a method of selecting virtual keyboard keys on the screen one by one using a controller, a method of inputting through a keyboard that is a resource of a computer by connecting a computer and VR, or a method of inputting through a keyboard that is a resource of a computer by purchasing a wireless keyboard in VR and wireless keyboard connection method. As such, the text input method in current VR equipment causes inconvenience and additional costs to users. For these reasons, most of the VR-related contents are limited to simple functions such as games or viewers, and there is a risk that VR equipment will be recognized as a simple game machine. Therefore, in this study, a multi-input interface using hand tracking provided by the Oculus Quest2 device is designed and partially implemented. Through this, it is expected that various tasks such as document work and business processing as well as games can be conveniently used using VR equipment.

  • In this paper, we propose an evaluation model to evaluate the usability of locomotion technologies in a virtual environment (VE; Virtual Environment) and try to verify them through a case study. The order of this study firstly, the factors for analysis are derived through theoretical approach to locomotion technology on VR. Second, the definition and concept of mobile technology and usability evaluation in VR are established theoretically and the elements for analysis are derived through the literature survey through the theoretical approach to VE. Third, based on this, a usability evaluation model is proposed to evaluate locomotion technologies in the VE. Finally, the results are derived by experimenting and analyzing the existing VR games applied with the three locomotion technologies derived from the literature survey. Through this paper, the locomotion technology in VR is not used separately, but can propose mobile technology that conforms to VR game content characteristics by assessing its usability and analyzing it, and it is considered to be a significant data that can suggest criteria for identifying problems in locomotion technology.

  • In this paper, we introduce an efficient GPU-based real-time rendering technique applicable to every kind of game. Our method, without an extra geometry, can represent terrain just with a height map. It makes it possible to freely go around in the air or on the surface, so we can directly apply it to any computer games as well as a virtual reality. Since our method is not based on any geometrical structure, it doesn't need special LOD policy and the precision of geometrical representation and visual quality absolutely depend on the resolution of height map and color map. Moreover, GPU-only technique allows the general CPU to be dedicated to more general work, and as a result, enhances the overall performance of the computer. To date, there have been many researches related to the terrain representation, but most of them rely on CPU or confmed its applications to flight simulation, Improving existing displacement mapping techniques and applying it to our terrain rendering, we completely ruled out the problems, such as cracking, poping etc, which cause in polygon-based techniques, The most important contributions are to efficiently deal with arbitrary LOS(Line Of Sight) and dramatically improve visual quality during walk-through by reconstructing a height field with curved patches. We suggest a simple and useful method for calculating ray-patch intersections. We implemented all these on GPU 100%, and got tens to hundreds of framerates with height maps a variety of resolutions$(256{\times}256\;to\;4096{\times}4096)$.

  • Space and place have distinctively different meanings from each other. As virtual reality has become a routine of daily life, placeness concepts have been introduced on discussion tables. Yet, place has not been widely discussed in conceptual approaches Thus, using the concepts of space and place this study attempts to figure out the structure and the processes of how users recognize digital space and give placeness. For the study purpose, it identifies core elements of placeness attribution in digital game places, and then explains the development processes of space into place through characteristics of MDA(Mechanics-Dynamics-Aesthetics)framework. Based on present theoretical concepts and their application process this study also demonstrates the transformation process through which physical space becomes a place in the similar context with a necessary condition in order for a space to be a place. This study confirms that digital games can be transformed into a space that creates placeness in the process. Considering that players' affinity and nostalgia are generated through the placeness acquiring process in digital game space, the processes eventually imply an extension of largely meaningful and influencing contents as digital games induce players' immersion.

  • The non-face-to-face environment accelerated by COVID-19 has speeded up the dissemination of digital virtual ecosystems and metaverse. In order for the metaverse to be sustainable, digital twins that are compatible with the real world are key, and critical technology for that is AR (Augmented Reality). In this study, we examined research trends about AR, and will propose the directions for future AR research. We conducted LDA based topic modeling on 11,049 abstracts of published domestic and foreign AR related papers from 2009 to Mar 2022, and then looked into AR that was comprehensive research trends, comparison of domestic and foreign research trends, and research trends before and after the popularity of metaverse concepts. As a result, the topics of AR related research were deduced from 11 topics such as device, network communication, surgery, digital twin, education, serious game, camera/vision, color application, therapy, location accuracy, and interface design. After popularity of metaverse, 6 topics were deduced such as camera/vision, training, digital twin, surgical/surgical, interaction performance, and network communication. We will expect, through this study, to encourage active research on metaverse AR with convergent characteristics in multidisciplinary fields and contribute to giving useful implications to practitioners.
