  • Many researchers have made efforts to control the stereoregularity in radical polymerization of vinyl monomers because the physical and chemical properties of the polymer are significantly affected by the stereostructure.[1]-[4] In general, monomer design, reaction conditions(e.g. solvent, temperature, and monomer concentration), and additives can alter the stereochemistry of the radical polymerization of acrylic monomer. • A new strategy using protection-deprotection chemistry was used to prepare branched polymers using the ATRP method only. Among the several monomers with different protecting groups, vinyl benzyl t-butyloxy carbonate (VBt-BOC) and 4-methyl styrene (4-MeSt) could be polymerized successfully to form backbones using the ATRP method in a controlled fashion. The protected groups in the backbones were converted to alkyl bromides and used as initiating sites for branch formation. The benzyl t-butyloxy carbonate groups in the backbones containing VBt-BOC units were first deprotected to benzyl alcohol by trifluoroacetic acid, then converted to benzyl bromide by reacting them with triphenylphosphine/carbon tetrabromide. The benzyl bromide groups in the backbones containing 4-MeSt units could be generated by bromination of the methyl groups using N-bromosuccinimide/benzoyl peroxide. The structures of the prepared polymers were well-controlled, as evidenced by the controlled molecular weight as well as the narrow and unimodal molecular weight distribution.

  • Nanofiltration membranes were prepared based on coating a sulfonated comb-like copolymer layer on top of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) support. The comb-like copolymer comprising poly(vinyl chloride) backbone and poly(styrene sulfonic acid) side chains, i.e. PVC-g-PSSA was synthesized by atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) using direct initiation of the secondary chlorines of PVC. The successful synthesis of graft copolymers were confirmed by nuclear magnetic resonance ($^1H$-NMR), FT-IR spectroscopy and wide angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). Composite nanofiltration membranes consisting PVC-g-PSSA as a top layer exhibited the increase of both rejections and solution flux with increasing PSSA concentration. This performance enhancement is presumably due to the increase of SO3H groups and membrane hydrophilicity. The rejections of composite membranes containing 71 wt% of PSSA were 88% for $Na_2SO_4$ and 33% for NaCl, and the solution flux were 26 and $34L/m^2h$, respectively, at 0.3 MPa pressure.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) draw attention as promising materials due to their excellent electrical and mechanical properties. However, the intrinsic strong interaction between CNTs presents a challenge to their use in various applications. Here, we present a facile method to disperse single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in a polar solution using a graft copolymer, poly(vinyl chloride)-graft-poly(oxyethylene methacrylate), PVC-g-POEM. The graft copolymer was synthesized via atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), as confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and $^1H$ NMR spectroscopy. The SWCNTs were uniformly dispersed in a polar solvent such as dimethylsiloxane (DMSO) using PVC-g-POEM as a dispersant, due to interaction between CNT and the graft copolymer, as revealed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. Upon removal of the solvent, free standing nanocomposite films with good homogeneity were obtained.

  • Water soluble polymer, poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) was chosen to conjugate with 1,2-dioleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphoethanolamine-N-(succinyl) (N-succinyl DPPE) to make a new drug delivery system. PVP with an amine group (amino-PVP) was polymerized by free radical polymerization. The amine group of amino-PVP was conjugated with the carboxylic group of N-succinyl DPPE. The resultant conjugate could form nanoparticles in the aqueous solution; these nanoparticles were termed a lipid-polymer system. The critical aggregation concentration was measured with pyrene to give a value of $1{\times}10^{-3}g/L$. The particle size of the lipid-polymer system, as measured by DLS, AFM and TEM, was about 70 nm. Lipophilic component in the inner part of the lipid-polymer system could derive the physical interaction with hydrophobic drugs. Griseofulvin was used as a model drug in this study. The loading efficiency and release profile of the drug were measured by HPLC. The loading efficiency was about 54%. The release behavior was sustained for a prolonged time of 12 days. The proposed lipid-polymer system with biodegradable and biocompatible properties has promising potential as a passive-targeting drug delivery carrier because of its small particle size.

  • The aim of this study was to develop novel intestinal specific drug delivery systems with pH sensitive swelling and drug release properties. The carboxyl group of ibuprofen was converted to a vinyl ester group by reacting ibuprofen and vinyl acetate as an acylating agent in the presence of catalyst. The glucose-6-acrylate-1, 2, 3, 4-tetraacetate (GATA) monomer was prepared under mild conditions. Cubane-1, 4-dicarboxylic acid (CDA) linked to two 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) group was used as the crosslinking agent (CA). Methacrylic-type polymeric prodrugs were synthesized by the free radical copolymerization of methacrylic acid, vinyl ester derivative of ibuprofen (VIP) and GATA in the presence of cubane cross linking agent. The structure of VIP was characterized and confirmed by FTIR, $^1H$ NMR and $^{13}C$ NMR spectroscopy. The composition of the cross-linked three-dimensional polymers was determined by FTIR spectroscopy. The hydrolysis of drug polymer conjugates was carried out in cel-lophane membrane dialysis bags, and the in vitro release profiles were established separately in enzyme-free simulated gastric and intestinal fluids (SGF, pH 1 and SIF, pH 7.4). The detection of a hydrolysis solution by UV spectroscopy at selected intervals showed that the drug can be released by hydrolysis of the ester bond between the drug and polymer backbone at a low rate. Drug release studies showed that increasing the MAA content in the copolymer enhances the rate of hydrolysis in SIP. These results suggest that these polymeric prodrugs can be useful for the release of ibuprofen in controlled release systems.

  • 2-Ethoxy-6-methoxy-5-cyano-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyran (1_a$), 2-n-butoxy-6-methoxy-5-cyano-3,4-dihydro-2H-pyr an (1b), 2-isobutoxy-6-methoxy-5-cyano-3,4-dihydro-2H-py ran ($1_c$), and 2-ethoxy-6-methoxy-3-methyl-5-cyano-3,4-dihydro -2H-pyran ($1_d$) were prepared by (4 + 2) cycloaddition reaction of methyl $\alpha$-cyanoacrylate with the corresponding alkyl vinyl ethers. Compounds $1_{a-d}$ were ring-open polymerized by cationic catalyst to obtain alternating head-to-head (H-H) copolymers. For comparison, head-to-tail (H-T) copolymer $3_a$ was also prepared by free radical copolymerization of the corresponding monomers. The H-H copolymer exhibited minor differences in its $1_H% NMR and IR spectra, but in the $^{13}C$ NMR spectra significant differences were observed between the H-H and H-T copolymers. Glass transition temperature ($T_g$) of H-H copolymer was higher than that of the H-T copolymer, but thermal decomposition temperature of the H-H copolymer was lower than that of the H-T copolymer. Compounds $1_a$, $a_b$, and $1_c$, copolymerized well with styrene by cationic catalyst, but compound 1d failed to copolymerize with styrene. All of the H-H and H-T copolymers were soluble in common solvents and the inherent viscosities were in the range 0.2-0.4 dl/g.

  • The "grafting from" technology to prepare the well-defined microphase-separated structure of polymer using atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) will be introduced in this presentation. Various amphiphilic comb copolymers were synthesized through this approach using poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-co-CTFE) and poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as a macroinitiator. Hydrophilic side chains such as poly (styrene sulfonic acid) (PSSA) or poly (sulfopropyl methacrylate) (PSPMA) were grafted from the mains chains using direct initiation of the chlorine atoms. The structure of mass transport channels has been controlled and fixed by crosslinking the hydrophobic domains, which also provides the greater mechanical properties of membranes. Successful synthesis and microphase-separated structure of the polymer were confirmed by $^1H$ NMR, FT-IR spectroscopy and TEM. The grafted/crosslinked membranes exhibited good mechanical properties (400 MPa of Young's modulus) and high thermal stability (up to $300^{\circ}C$), as determined by a universal testing machine (UTM) and TGA, respectively.
