  • The reactive precursors, vinyl ethers, and epoxy-silicones, were synthesized. The vinyl ether monomers were prepared from primary alcohol and ethyl vinyl ether with mercury (II) acetate. The epoxy-functionalized silicones have been achieved by the controlled, rhodium-catalyzed, chemoselective hydrosilation of vinyl ether with siloxanes or silane. It was shown that the hydrosilation proceeds exclusively at the vinyl ether group of alkenyl vinyl ether without participation at the alkenyl group. The photoinduced cationic polymerization of these monomers was studied and found to be all highly reactive.

  • This miniaccount presents the selective examples of our recent discoveries in the photopolymerization of vinyl monomers using the organic initiators such as hydrosilanes, poly(hydroarylsilane)s, benzoin silyl ethers, and thianthrene cation radical. In the photopolymerization of vinyl monomers with silanes polysilanes, while the polymerization yields and polymer molecular weights of the poly(MMA)s containing the silyl moieties decreased, the TGA residue yields and intensities of SiH stretching IR bands increased as the mole ratio of the silanes over MMA increased. The hydroarylsilane and poly(hydroarylsilane) seemed to influence strongly on the photopolymerizaiton of olefinic monomers as both chain initiation and chain transfer agents. For the photohomopolymerization and photocopolymerization of MA and AA, the similar trends were observed. Benzoin silyl ethers and thianthrene cation radical also exhibit the photoinitiating ability in the photopolymerization of MMA.

  • The development of metal catalysts that can polymerize or copolymerize "polar" $Ch_2=CHX$ monomers by insertion mechanisms would significantly expand the scope of metal-catalyzed polymerization and enable the synthesis of new materials with enhanced properties. We have studied the reactions of single-site olefin polymerization catalysts with vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, and vinyl ethers, in order to probe monomer coordination trends, insertion rates and regioselectivity, and the structures and reactivity of metal alkyls that contain functional groups on the alpha and beta positions of the alkyl chain. These studies provide insights to the key issues that underlie the "polar monomer" problem. Copolymerization of olefins and selected vinyl ethers has been achieved.

  • Graft polymerization of vinyl monomers onto silk were carried out in aqueous medium using ceric salt as an initiator, and discussed about the mechanical properties of silk. The results obtained are summarized as follows: 1. Percent grafting is greatly enhanced by the increasing of the temperature. 2. Effect of percent grafting is in the order of methyl methacrylate, and vinyl acetate. 3. Strength is decreased in the high grafted silk, and elongation is increased in the low grafted silk.

  • The four different vinyl monomers in the reaction of isocyanate-terminated polyurethane prepolymer were used for the preparation of macromonomers and successfully employed in the dispersion polymerization of styrene. The chemical structures of vinyl monomer in macromonomers influenced on the polystyrene particle characteristics, such as the conversion, weight average molecular weights ($M_w$), polydispersity index (PDI), weight average diameter ($D_w$), and uniformity. The conversion of polystyrene increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer. Also the uniformity of polystyrene particles increased with amounts of methyl group in vinyl monomer.

  • $Bu_3Sn$-endded poly(vinyl)s with biological activity were obtained by the radical polymerization of vinyl monomers using thianthrene cation radical/$^nBu_3H$. Thianthrene cation and stannyl radicals promoted the homopolymerization and copolymerization of styrene and ethyl vinyl ether having number average molecular weights of 2000-3100. Tributyltin hydride functions as a chain transfer agent. Such polymereization by cationic thianthrene and stannyl radicals could provide some clues for the biological reaction in living animals. Plausible polymerization mechanisms were suggested.

  • A series of vinyl monomers and their saturated model compounds containing different chromophores were synthesized. These monomers display strong intra-molecular fluorescence quenching, their fluorescence quantum yields and lifetimes are generally lower than those of their model compounds. It was found that the C=C bonds in these monomers played a key role in the intra-molecular quenching, which was confirmed by intermolecular fluorescence quenching and time-resolved fluorescence studies. On the basis of the intra-molecular quenching, a new fluorescence approach can be developed to monitor the process of the polymerization and curing of bismaleimides, which can directly reflect the C=C bond consumption during polymerization and curing.

  • The metallocene compounds had been applied to the polymerizations of olefins and vinyl monomers with methylaluminoxane (MAO) cocatalyst, and they have usually one transition metal atom per molecule, i.e., mononuclear metallocene. Recently it has been found that the dinuclear metallocene compounds containing two transition metal atoms exhibit the peculiar polymerization behaviors for olefins and vinyl monomers. In this article, the dinuclear metallocenes are classified into four groups of dinuclear bent-metallocene, dinuclear ansa-metallocene, dinuclear constrained geometry catalyst and dinuclear half-metallocene, and then the synthesis of dinuclear metallocene of each group as well as the polymerization behaviors for ethylene, propylene, and styrene are described.

  • A series of new, vinyl sulfone-containing monomers was prepared by p-aminophenyl vinyl sulfone (1) with various acid chlorides such as adipoly chloride, terephthaloyl chloride and isophthaloyl chloride. Finally, tertiary amine-containing poly(amide-sulfone)s were prepared by the Michael-type addition polymerization using N,N-dimethylethylenediamine (DMEDA), p-phenylenediamine and piperazin. To evaluate the relevant properties for permselective membranes and enzyme substrate, various physical properties such as molecular weight, solubility, quaternization behavior and thermal properties were examined.

  • The direct chromatographic separation of enantiomers by chiral stationary phases (CSPs) has been extensively developed over the past two decades, and has now become the most popular method for the analytical and preparative separations of enantiomers. Polysaccharide derivatives coated onto silica gel, as CSPs, playa significantly important role in the enantioseparations of a wide range of chiral compounds using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Unfortunately, the strict solvent limitation of the mobile phases is the main defect in the method developments of these types of coated CSPs. Therefore, the immobilization of polysaccharide derivatives onto silica gel, via chemical bonding, to obtain a new generation of CSPs compatible with the universal solvents used in HPLC is increasingly important. In this article, our recent studies on the immobilization of polysaccharide derivatives onto the silica gel, as CSPs, through radical copolymerization with various vinyl monomers are reported. Polysaccharide derivatives, with low vinyl content, can be efficiently fixed onto silica gel with high chiral recognition.
