Synthesis and Photopolymerization of Vinyl Ether and Epoxy-Functionalized Silicones

  • The reactive precursors, vinyl ethers, and epoxy-silicones, were synthesized. The vinyl ether monomers were prepared from primary alcohol and ethyl vinyl ether with mercury (II) acetate. The epoxy-functionalized silicones have been achieved by the controlled, rhodium-catalyzed, chemoselective hydrosilation of vinyl ether with siloxanes or silane. It was shown that the hydrosilation proceeds exclusively at the vinyl ether group of alkenyl vinyl ether without participation at the alkenyl group. The photoinduced cationic polymerization of these monomers was studied and found to be all highly reactive.

  • Methyl vinyl ether, propyl vinyl ether, isopropyl vinyl ether, butyl vinyl ether 그리고 isobutyl vinyl ether 등의 alkyl vinyl ether는 화학 및 의약산업에서 용매와 합성중간체로 널리 사용된다. 최근 들어 alkyl vinyl ether는 고분자 전해질막 연료 전지에 대한 원료와 셀룰로오스의 염색가공에 선호되나, 공정 및 운전변수의 최적화를 위한 alkyl vinyl ether계의 혼합물성은 극히 일부가 보고되고 있고, propyl vinyl ether(PVE)에 대한 상평형과 물성 데이터는 거의 알려진 바가 없다. 따라서 본 연구는 {PVE + ethanol + benzene} 삼성분계 333.15 K에서 기액평형을 headspace gas chromatography (HSGC)을 이용하여 측정하였고 Wilson, NRTL 및 UNIQUAC 식에 상관시켰다. 또한 삼성분계를 구성하는 혼합물성으로써 {PVE + ethanol}, {ethanol + benzene} 그리고 {PVE + benzene}계에 대한 과잉부피($V^E$) 및 굴절율 편차(${\Delta}R$)를 303.15 K에서 측정하였다. 측정된 이성분계 혼합물성은 Redlich-Kister 다항식을 이용하여 매개변수를 상관시켰으며, 이를 이용하여 Radojkovi 식으로 삼성분계 혼합물성을 예측하였다.

  • 본 연구에서는 양이온 교환막으로 Sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK)를 사용하였고, 음이온 교환막은 poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)과 poly(vinyl amine) (PVAm)을 혼합하여 가교시킨 막을 이용하였으며, 이에 대한 막결합형 축전식 탈염 공정(Membrane capacitive deionization, MCDI)의 성능실험을 진행하였다. 음이온 교환막의 함수율, 이온교환용량, FT-IR 측정을 통하여 막의 특성을 알아보았다. 음이온 교환막의 가교 시간이 3 h에서 5 h으로 증가할수록 염 제거 효율은 81.3%에서 65.7, 53.8%로 감소하였다. PVAm의 농도를 40, 60, 80%로 달리하여 실험한 결과 염 제거 효율은 81.3, 75.2, 37.7%로 PVAm이 80% 함량일 때 가장 효율이 떨어졌다. 이는 음이온 교환막의 가교 시간과 PVAm의 농도가 염제거 성능에 영향을 미치는 것으로 사료된다.

계면확산에 의한 Poly(hydroxy ether) 코팅된 탄소섬유의 계면접착력 변화 연구 (Effect of Diffusion on the Interfacial Adhesion of Poly(hydroxy ether) Coated Caron Fibers)

  • 비닐에스테르 수지와 탄소섬유의 계면접착력 향상을 위하여 탄소섬유에 물에 분산된 carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether) (C-PHE)와 수용성 고분자인 poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine) (PHEA) 및 비수용성인 poly(hydroxy ether) (PHE) 로 코팅하였다. 고분자로 코팅된 탄소섬유와 수지의 계면전단강도는 micro-droplet 시편을 제조하여 측정하였으며,각 시료마다 30개 이상의 시편을 사용하였다. 접착기구 규명을 위하여 코팅재로 사용된 고분자와 비닐에스테르 수지와 계면에서 확산현상을 고찰하였으며, 접착성 시험 후 탄소섬유의 표면을 SEM을 이용하여 분석하였다. PHE와 C-PHE코팅으로 탄소섬유의 계면전단강도가 크게 증가하였으며, 이는 이들 고분자의 비닐에스테르에 대한 우수한 용해도(solubility)때문으로 보여진다. 하지만 용해도가 낮은 PHEA코팅은 접착력 향상에 효과가 없었다.

Copolymerization of 4′-vinylbenzo-15-crown-5 with Di(ethylene glycol) Ethyl Ether Acrylate

  • Radical copolymerization behavior of 4'-vinylbenzo-15-crown-5, a vinyl monomer having a pendant 15-membared crown ether unit (VCE) with di(ethylene glycol) ethyl ether acrylate (DEGEEA) was carried out in toluene solution using 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as an initiator. The copolymers were characterized by means of FT-IR, $^1{H-NMR}$, and $^{13}{C-NMR}$ . The reactivity ratio of VCE and DEGEEA, determined by Fineman-Ross and Kelen-Tudos method, gave values 0.55 for VCE, and 0.11 for DEGEEA respectively.

Living cationic polymerization of Viny Ethers in Presence of Iodomethyl Methyl Ether and Zinc Iodide

  • Living cationic polymerization behaviors of isobutyl vinyl ehters (IBVE), initiated by iodomethyl methyl ether (IMME)/zinc iodide ($Znl_2$) have been investigated. The polymerization was carried out at 0, -15, and $-30^{\circ}C$ in toluene. It was found that the rate of polymerization increased as the IMME concentration increased and decreased as temperature decreased. 100% conversion was always achieved without exception. Furthermore, the number-average molecular weight ($M_{n}$) of polymers increased in direct proportion to monomer conversion. The molecular weights of polymers were in good agreement with the theoretical values, calculated on the basis that one polymer chain was formed by one IMME molecule and the values of polydispersity index are always less than 1.2, revealing the living nature. The living nature was also confirmed by synthesis of poly(IBVE-b-TBVE) by subsequent monomer addition of t-butyl vinyl ether (TBVE).

Living cationic polymerization of poly (isobutyl vinyl ether) and PVA derived therefrom

  • Some new synthetic routes for the preparation of poly (isobutyl vinyl ether) (P(IBVE)) having a controllable molar mass with narrow distribution via catalytic or photoinduced living cationic polymerization and their conversion to corresponding PVA have been developed. It was found that the combination of iodomethyl methyl ether (IMME)-zinc iodide is effective in the initiation of the catalytic and the various combinations of diphenyliodonium halides, well known photocationic initiators (DPIX) with zinc halides (ZnX$_2$) are also useful in photoinduced living cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE). Polymerization both in the catalytic and photoinduced systems precede until the full consumption of the monomer and the rate of polymerization increases as the concentration of the catalyst or photoinitiator. The number average molar mass of the resulting polymer is proportional with % conversion, which is determined by the ratio of monomer consumed and the initial values of the catalyst or initiator. The living nature was also confirmed by subsequent monomer addition technique.

  • Poly(arylene ether phosphin oxide) (PEPO), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700, Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. poly(hydroxy ether) (PHE), carboxy modified poly(hydroxy ether)(C-PHE) and poly(hydroxy ether ethanol amine) (PHEA) were utilized for a coating of carbon fibers. Interfacial shear strength(IFSS) of polymers to carbon fibers was also evaluated in order to understand the adhesion mechanism. IFSS was measured via micro-droplet tests, and failure surfaces were analyzed by SEM. Diffusion between polymer and vinyl ester resin was investigated as a function of styrene content; 33. 40 or 50wt.% and the solubility parameters of polymers were calculated. The results were correlated to the interfacial shear strength. The highly enhanced interfacial shear strength (IFSS) was obtained with PEPO coating, and marginally improved IFSS with PHE, Udel$^{\circledR}$ and C-PHE coatings, but no improvement with PHEA and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ coatings.

Solvent Effect of Photoinduced Living Cationic Polymerization of Isobutyl Vinyl Ether

  • Major factors including solvent and reaction temperature in the cationic polymerization of isobutyl vinyl ether (IBVE), photoinduced in the presence of diphenyliodonium iodide (DPII) zinc iodide in toluene/diethyl ether mixed solvent has been investigated. It was found that the living nature of the propagating species and the tacticity of the resulting polymer is significantly dependent on these factors. The addition of diethyl ether (DEE) results in not only the loss of the cationic living nature but also decrease in the isotactic content.

  • 요오드 2분자가 양이온(I$^{+}$)과 음이온(I$_3$$^{-}$)로 해리되어 이 매 생성된 양이온에 의한 비닐 에테르류의 양이온 중합에 관한 연구는 보고된 바 있으나$^{1)}$ 요오드를 개시제로 사용한 삼차부틸 에테르의 양이온 중합에 관한 결과가 발표된 것은 별로 눈에 뜨이지 않는다. 삼차 부틸 에테르는 단량체의 활성이 크고 중합거동이 타 비닐 에테르류와 매우 다르기 때문에$^{3),4)}$ boron trifluoride diethyl etherate를 개시제로 하고, n-햅탄 이나 톨루엔과 같은 비극성용매를 사용하여 저온에서 중합을 행한 결과만이 보고되고 있다.$^{2)-5)}$ (중략)
