  • Modern technology offers many ways to enhance teaching and learning that in turn promote the development of tools for educational activities both inside and outside the classroom. Many educational programs using the augmented reality (AR) technology are being widely used to provide supplementary learning materials for students. This paper describes the potential and challenges of using GeoGebra AR in mathematical studies, whereby students can view 3D geometric objects for a better understanding of their structure, and verifies the feasibility of its use based on experimental results. The GeoGebra software can be used to draw geometric objects, and 3D geometric objects can be viewed using AR software or AR applications on mobile phones or computer tablets. These could provide some of the required materials for mathematical education at high schools or universities. The use of the GeoGebra application for education in Laos will be particularly discussed in this paper.

  • This work describes a preliminary investigation to a learning model based on cybernetics and radical constructivism. To achieve this purpose, main ideas of cybernetics, i.e., negative feedback, difference, self-regulation, equilibrium, and purpose-directed behavior was analysed under radical constructivism. Powers' model, which consists of hierarchically arranged negative feedback systems, is introduced into this work. This was based on the claim that living organisms behave to control perceptions. By adding the notion of scheme from the view of radical constructivism, a learning procedure, which consists of six steps, was suggested in this work.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the views on utilizing ICT material, especially the reasons for ICT material choice. Numerous recent studies have demonstrated increased use of electronic devices including smartphones in educational settings. But the reasons for using it as a learning tool have not been relatively researched from the point of view of pre-service teachers. Therefore, this study analyzed the pre-service teachers' thinking about utilizing ICT material and their learning experience. In that regard, data was collected in various ways such as surveys, interviews, and brief writings of participants. According to the study result, pre-service teachers were motivated in utilizing ICT material rather than text material. That is the reason why, as adult learners, especially pre-service teachers could be more motivated in self-directed learning environments. This study will be useful in considering ideas for the instructional design of pre-service teachers.

  • This paper presents a neuro adaptive control method for nonlinear dynamical systems based on artificial neural network systems. The proposed neuro adaptive controller consists of 3 layers artificial neural network system and parallel PD controller. At the early stage in learning or identification process of the system characteristics the PD controller works mainly in order to compensate for the inadequacy of the learning process and then gradually the neuro contrller begins to work instead of the PD controller after the learning process has proceeded. From the simulation studies the neuro adaptive controller is seen to be robust and works effectively for nonlinear dynamical systems from a practical applicational points of view.

  • Compton imaging is the main method for locating radioactive hot spots emitting high-energy gamma-ray photons. In particular, this imaging method is crucial when the photon energy is too high for coded-mask aperture imaging methods to be effective or when a large field of view is required. Reconstruction of the photon source requires advanced Compton event processing algorithms to determine the exact position of the source. In this study, we introduce a novel method based on a Deep Learning algorithm with a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to perform Compton imaging. This algorithm is trained on simulated data and tested on real data acquired with Caliste, a single planar CdTe pixelated detector. We show that performance in terms of source location accuracy is equivalent to state-of-the-art algorithms, while computation time is significantly reduced and sensitivity is improved by a factor of ~5 in the Caliste configuration.

  • The last years have seen a rise of interest in using electroencephalography-based brain computer interfacing methodology for investigating non-medical questions, beyond the purpose of communication and control. One of these novel applications is to examine how signal quality is being processed neurally, which is of particular interest for industry, besides providing neuroscientific insights. As for most behavioral experiments in the neurosciences, the assessment of a given stimulus by a subject is required. Based on an EEG study on speech quality of phonemes, we will first discuss the information contained in the neural correlate of this judgement. Typically, this is done by analyzing the data along behavioral responses/labels. However, participants in such complex experiments often guess at the threshold of perception. This leads to labels that are only partly correct, and oftentimes random, which is a problematic scenario for using supervised learning. Therefore, we propose a novel supervised-unsupervised learning scheme, which aims to differentiate true labels from random ones in a data-driven way. We show that this approach provides a more crisp view of the brain states that experimenters are looking for, besides discovering additional brain states to which the classical analysis is blind.

  • With only the classical PID controller applied to control of a DC motor, good (target) performance characteristic of the controller can be obtained if all the model parameters of DC motor and operating conditions such as external load torque, disturbance, etc. are known exactly. However, in case when some of system parameters or operating conditions are uncertain or unknown, the fixed PID controller does not guarantee good performance, which is assumed with precisely known system parameters and operating conditions. In view of this and the robustness enhancement of DC motor control system, we propose a PID learning controller which consists of a set of learning rules for PID gain tuning and learning of an auxiliary input. The proposed PID learning controller is shown to drive the state of uncertain DC motor system with unknown system parameters and external load torque to the desired one world wide asymptotically. Computer simulation and experimental results are given to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed PID learning controller, thereby showing its superiority to the conventional fixed PID controller.

  • This research presented an implementation of autostereoscopic virtual three-dimensional (3D) button device as non-contact style. The proposed device has several characteristics about visible feature, non-contact use and artificial intelligence (AI) engine. The device was designed to be contactless to prevent virus contamination and consists of 3D buttons in a virtual stereoscopic view. To specify the button pressed virtually by fingertip pointing, a simple deep learning network having two stages without convolution filters was designed. As confirmed in the experiment, if the input data composition is clearly designed, the deep learning network does not need to be configured so complexly. As the results of testing and evaluation by the certification institute, the proposed button device shows high reliability and stability.

  • Despite the social turn in literacy studies, few empirical studies have investigated the practical applications and learning experiences of multimodal composition pedagogy. Using a qualitative research approach, this study examines undergraduates' experiences in producing multimodal texts. Findings report that students' experiences in a multimodal composition class epitomize enjoyable learning. Students enjoyed their learning process because (a) the multimodal literacy curriculum filled the pedagogical gap between the conventional school-sponsored alphabetic literacy pedagogy and widespread out-of-school multimodal literacy practices and (b) the usefulness of the curriculum helped students enhance their intrinsic motivation to learn and compose. By questioning fundamental assumptions about what counts as knowledge in the current ecology of literacies, the authors argue for a dynamic view of literacy into practice.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop a communication model of teaching-learning at culinary practical learning class in school. Statistically, the organizational culture of culinary schools was influenced by the nature of hierarchical culture, task outcomes, and the conservative culture of organizations in companies. First, in basic skill class, teaching and learning methods are based on a teacher who leads students according to his plans and decisions. Second, in a higher skill course, teaching and learning methods are based on students who take an active part by injecting some fresh ideas into their class. Third, the model of three courses for culinary skill development has an effect on processing into a modeling-scaffolding-fading method by teaching and learning in school. It was ascertained that organizational culture directly or indirectly influenced organizational effectiveness and organizational culture in culinary schools. Moreover, it was found that organizational culture was the biggest influencing concept for communication effectiveness between teachers and students.
