Ka-band Satellite Broadcasting System using Scalable Video technology

  • In this paper, we propose an advanced Ka-band satellite HD broadcasting system using scalable video coding technology. As already known, it is not so easy to achieve reasonable link availability on Ka-band because of the rain-attenuation effect, and in case of HD broadcasting service it's more difficult. To overcome that problem, we propose an hierarchical broadcasting system based on H.264 SVC technology. In this paper, we suggest a few types of system scenario to realize the concept. Those scenarios are including DVB-S and DVB-S2 and spatially scalable video stream is the source stream in all cases.

Unequal Error Protection and Error Concealment Schemes for the Transmission of H.263 Video over Mobile Channels

  • This paper presents unequal error protection and error concealment techniques far robust H.263 video transmission over mobile channels. The proposed error protection scheme has three major features. First, it has the capability of preventing the loss of synchronization information in H.263 video stream as much as possible that the H.263 decoder can resynchronize at the next decoding point, if errors are occurred. Secondly, it employs an unequal error protection scheme to support variable coding rates using rate compatible punctured convolutional (RCPC) codes, dividing the encoded stream into two classes. Finally, a macroblock-interleaving scheme is employed in order to minimize the corruption of consecutive macroblocks due to burst errors, which can make a proper condition for error concealment. In addition, to minimize the spatial error propagations due to the variable length codes, a fast resynchronization scheme at the group of block layer is developed for recovering subsequent error-free macroblocks following the damaged macroblock. futhermore, error concealment techniques based on both side match criterion and overlapped block motion compensation (OBMC) are employed at the source decoder so that it can not only recover the lost macroblock more accurately, but also reduce blocking artifacts. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can be an effective error protection scheme since proper video quality can be maintained under various channel bit error rates.

An Advanced Coding for Video Streaming System: Hardware and Software Video Coding

  • Currently, High-efficient video coding (HEVC) has become the most promising video coding technology. However, the implementation of HEVC in video streaming systems is restricted by factors such as cost, design complexity, and compatibility with existing systems. While HEVC is considering deploying to various systems with different reached methods, H264/AVC can be one of the best choices for current video streaming systems. This paper presents an adaptive method for manipulating video streams using video coding on an integrated circuit (IC) designed with a private network processor. The proposed system allows to transfer multimedia data from cameras or other video sources to client. For this work, a series of video or audio packages from the video source are forwarded to the designed IC via HDMI cable, called Tx transmitter. The Tx processes input data into a real-time stream using its own protocol according to the Real-Time Transmission Protocol for both video and audio, then Tx transmits output packages to the video client though internet. The client includes hardware or software video/audio decoders to decode the received packages. Tx uses H264/AVC or HEVC video coding to encode video data, and its audio coding is PCM format. By handling the message exchanges between Tx and the client, the transmitted session can be set up quickly. Output results show that transmission's throughput can be achieved about 50 Mbps with approximately 80 msec latency.

Automatic Indexing Algorithm of Golf Video Using Audio Information (오디오 정보를 이용한 골프 동영상 자동 색인 알고리즘)

  • This paper proposes an automatic indexing algorithm of golf video using audio information. In the proposed algorithm, the input audio stream is demultiplexed into the stream of video and audio. By means of Adaboost-cascade classifier, the continuous audio stream is classified into announcer's speech segment recorded in studio, music segment accompanied with players' names on TV screen, reaction segment of audience according to the play, reporter's speech segment with field background, filed noise segment like wind or waves. And golf swing sound including drive shot, iron shot, and putting shot is detected by the method of impulse onset detection and modulation spectrum verification. The detected swing and applause are used effectively to index action or highlight unit. Compared with video based semantic analysis, main advantage of the proposed system is its small computation requirement so that it facilitates to apply the technology to embedded consumer electronic devices for fast browsing.

  • 기존의 인터넷 기반 데이터 서비스는 'Best-effort' 정책으로 멀티미디어 서비스를 위한 트래픽 제어(traffic control) 기능을 제공하지 못한다. 그러므로 실시간 데이터 전송을 기반으로 제공되는 VOD(Video-on-Demand) 서비스는 사용자가 원하는 QoS(Quality of Service)를 제공할 수 없다. 따라서 인터넷 상에서 트래픽 제어 기능을 갖춘 중개자를 두어 VOD 서비스를 제공하는 방법에 대해 제안한다. 중개자의 주요 기능은 비디오 서버와 클라이언트 사이에 비디오 데이터의 버퍼링 기능을 이용하여 실시간 트래픽 제어를 수행한다. 이런 기능을 가진 중개자를 에이전트라 부르고, 에이전트에 대한 설계 및 구현에 대해 기술한다.

  • MPGE(Moving Picture Expert Group)은 디지털 동영상 압축 부호화의 표준으로 자리잡고 있으며 MPEG-1에 이어 현재는 MPEG-2가 상용화되어 있는 실정이다. 복잡한 압축 기법의 적용으로 이를 재생하기 위해서는 전용의 하드웨어가 필요했지만 CPU의 성능이 향상됨에 따라 소프트웨어적으로 구현이 가능하게 되었다. 본 논문에서는 Software MPEG-1 Playback System에서 가장 큰 문제가 되는 Audio와 Video간의 동기화에 관한 기법을 제시한다.

  • Existing Android applications for streaming video in real time are dependent on the codec, which composes the encoding function, and the version of Android operating system. Also, for streaming video in real time, most applications should be connected with a separate desktop PC. To overcome these disadvantages, we propose a new application, which records and streams video in real time. Specifically, the proposed application uses the flash video file format, which is the common media file format supported by various versions of Android operating system. Through experiments, we show that it is possible for the proposed application to record the video screens more than 20 frames per second and to stream it in real time while using the existing video encoding methods.

  • 본 논문은 객체지향형 분산처리 환경 하에서 오디오나 비디오 등과 같은 실시간(real-time) 스트림(stream) 데이타를 처리하는 데 필요한 소프트웨어 기반구조를 설계하고 구현한 내용을 기술한다. 본 논문에서 제시한 DAViS(Distributed Object Framework supporting Audio/Video Streaming)는, 오디오/비디오 데이타의 처리와 관련된 여러 소프트웨어 구성요소들을 분산객체로 추상화하고, 그 객체들간의 제어정보 교환경로와 오디오/비디오 데이타 전송경로를 서로 분리하여 처리한다. 분산응용프로그램 작성자는 DAViS에서 제공하는 서비스들을 이용하여, 기존의 분산프로그래밍 환경이 제공하는 것과 동일한 수준에서 오디오/비디오 데이타에 대한 처리를 표현할 수 있다. DAViS는, 새로운 형식의 오디오/비디오 데이타를 처리하는 부분을 손쉽게 통합하고, 하부 네트워크의 전송기술이나 컴퓨터시스템 관련 기술의 진보를 신속하고 자연스럽게 수용할 수 있도록 하는 유연한 구조를 가지고 있다. Abstract This paper describes the design and implementation of software framework which supports the processing of real-time stream data like audio and video in distributed object-oriented computing environment. DAViS(Distributed Object Framework supporting Audio/Video Streaming), proposed in this paper, abstracts software components concerning the processing of audio/video data as distributed objects and separates the transmission path of data between them from that of control information. Based on DAViS, distributed applications can be written in the same abstract level as is provided by the existing distributed environment in handling audio/video data. DAViS has a flexible internal structure enough to easily incorporate new types of audio/video data and to rapidly accommodate the progress of underlying network and computer system technology with very little modifications.

Long-Term Performance Evaluation of Scheduling Disciplines in OFDMA Multi-Rate Video Multicast Transmission (OFDMA 다중률 비디오 멀티캐스트 전송에서 스케줄링 방식의 장기적 성능 평가)

  • The orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA) systems are well suited to multi-rate multicast transmission, as they allow flexible resource allocation across both frequency and time, and provide adaptive modulation and coding schemes. Unlike layered video coding, the multiple description coding (MDC) enables flexible decomposition of the raw video stream into two or more substreams. The quality of the video stream is expected to be roughly proportional to data rate sustained by the receiver. This paper describes a mathematical model of resource allocation and throughput in the multi-rate video multicast for the OFDMA wireless and mobile networks. The impact on mean opinion score (MOS), as a measurement of user-perceived quality (by employing a variety of scheduling disciplines) is discussed in terms of utility maximization and proportional fairness. We propose a pruning algorithm to ensure a minimum video quality even for a subset of users at the resource limitation, and show the optimal number of substreams and their rates can sustain.

An Optimal Video Editing Method using Frame Information Pre-Processing (프레임 정보 전처리를 활용한 최적 영상 편집 방법)

  • We can cut and paste portions of MPEG coded bitstream efficiently to rearrange the audio and video sequences using our proposed method. The proposed method decodes the MPEG stream within just only one GOP(Group of Picture), edits the decoded video frames, and encodes it back to a MPEG stream. In this method, precise editing is possible. A pre-processing step is specially designed to provide easy cut and paste processing. In the pre-processing step for editing MPEG streams, the detail information is extracted. In addition, video quality is not degraded after the proposed editing process is applied. Consequently, the experimental results show significant improvements compared with traditional algorithms for video editing method in terms of the efficiency and exactness.
