  • The hydrogen was charged TRIP steel by electrochemical method under 0.5M $H_2SO_4$ electrolyte and 0.5M NaOH electrolyte with hydrogen charging conditions respectively. The degree of hydrogen embrittlement of TRIP steel was evaluated by using micro Vickers hardness tests. These results showed that the degree of hydrogen embrittlement in acidic electrolyte with hydrogen penetration and hydrogen diffusion through the depth of specimen was more sensitive than its alkaine electrolyte between two type electrolytes. However, it was investigated that micro Vickers hardnesses of surface in acidic electrolyte under two electrolyte were higher than those of alkaine electrolyte. It was thought that in case of hydrogen embrittlement in acid-ice electrolyte, hydrogen charging time was more effective than current density, in case of alkaine electrolyte, hydrogen current density was more effective than charaging time.

  • Purpose: Purpose of this study is to analyze the effect of particle size as well as number of pass on surface microstructure and hardness of SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite fabricated by friction stir process (FSP). Method: SiC(p)/AZ31 surface composite containing different size of SiC particle (i. e., $2{\mu}m$ and $8{\mu}m$) was fabricated by multi-pass FSP. Microstructure was observed by scanning electron microscope and surface hardness was determined by Vickers hardness tester. Results: For all the FSPed specimens with and without hardening particles, grain size was refined due to dynamic recrystallization behavior. Surface hardness was observed to increase with decreasing particle size in the composite layer. Increasing number of FSP pass was effective for homogeneous distribution of the hardening particles and for resulting increase in surface hardness. Conclusion: FSP was effective to modify surface microstructure for improving surface hardness of SiC/AZ31 composite.

  • A novel folding process is proposed using a repeated cold-die forging and annealing to form a sterling silver ring. Sterling silver plate was cut into a doughnut shape, and lattices with 0.43-mm line-width were imprinted on it. The sample was folded by forging using dies with slopes of $45^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$, and $75^{\circ}$ and annealing. For comparison, samples were also fabricated without annealing. Strain was identified by measuring the length of lattices. Vernier calipers, a Vickers hardness tester, an optical microscope, and a UV-VIS colorimeter were used to determine the size, hardness, microstructure, and body color. Without annealing, cracks occurred. However, successful deformation was possible when annealing was used. The results of macro strain measurements show that the outer diameter and width decreased, while the inner diameter and thickness increased after the final process. The maximum strain was increased 0.128 toward the parallel direction. The Vickers hardness decreased after annealing and increased after the folding process. The microstructure results showed that the grain size increased after annealing but decreased after folding. The color difference based on the Lab index was under 10 for all processes. Eventually, a doughnut-shaped silver plate was successfully deformed into a ring shape by the folding process.

  • This study was conducted to determine the chemical composition and the mechanical properties of four commercially available low gold-based crown and bridge alloy produced in Korea. Four dental casting gold-silver-palladium alloys, i.e., A, B, C and D (code of alloys) were selected for the evaluation of chemical composition, ultimate tensile strength, elongation. values and Vickers hardness. The chemical composition of test specimens was analyzed by both emission spectrography and wet gravitation method with a 1.5gm of low gold ingot. The tensile properties and Vickers hardness was determined with cast specimens treated in following three conditions; as-cast, softening heat treatment and hardening heat treatment. The tensile testing bars were cast in accordance with the model designed by Gettleman and Harrison (1969) which was modified from the A. D. A. Specification No. 14 for dental chromium-cobalt casting alloy. Nine tensile test specimens were made from a split silicone mold for each of the test alloys to the size of 2.5mm in diameter and a gauge length of 10mm. All four alloys were handled in accordance with conventional methods used in Type III gold alloys. Ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured on an Instron Universal Tensile Testing Machine (Model 1125, Japan) operated at a crosshead rate of 0.1cm/min. Elongation values were measured using Digital Measuring Microscope (MS-152, FUSOH, Japan). Vickers hardness was determined with a Vickers Hardness Tester (Model VKH-l, Japan) at a 1.0kg load on a mounted tensile test specimen. The following results were obtained from this study; 1. All tested alloys were composed of Au, Ag, Pd, Cu, Zn and Fe in common. The composition rate of gold for all four alloys was found in the range of $42{\sim}47$ weight % as shown below. • The objective of this research is to analyze the fracture toughness of pure and silica co-doped yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal (3Y-TZP) bioceramics containing 0.1 and 0.2 wt.% of alumina, and sintered at a temperature of $1500^{\circ}C$. Because of the relatively easy preparation of the test specimens and the high speed of testing, the Vickers indentation fracture (VIF) technique is more frequently used to evaluate the fracture toughness of biomaterials and hard biological tissues. The Young's modulus and hardness values were obtained by means of nanoindentation and indentation methods. The fracture toughness values of 3Y-TZP bioceramics were calculated and analyzed using 15 equations related to the VIF technique, and loadings of 49.03 and 196.13 N with a Vickers diamond. For validation, the results were compared with fracture toughness values obtained by the single-edge laser-notch beam (SELNB) method with an almost atomically sharp laser-machined initial notch.

  • The current work investigates the effects of nucleation heat treatments, on the microstructure and mechanical properties of a novel silicate glass in $Li_2O-BaO-SiO_2$ system with 1 mol% $P_2O_5$ as nucleating agent. As-cast glass was exposed to nucleation heat treatments at $490-550^{\circ}C$ for 1-3 h. The microstructural examination was performed by SEM/EDS. The highest Vickers microhardness was determined to be 650 Hv for the sample heat treated at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The increase in the nucleation time also affected Vickers microhardness and the highest one was determined to be 600 Hv after nucleation for 3 h. The fracture toughness, $K_{IC}$ reached $2.51MPa.m^{1/2}$ after nucleation at $550^{\circ}C$ for 1 h. The nucleation temperatures had a more pronounced effect on the fracture toughnesses in comparison to nucleation times. The indentation toughness data was used to determine Weibull parameters from Ln ln [1/(1-P)]-$lnK_{IC}$ plots. Weibull modulus, m of the samples nucleated at 500, 510, 530, $550^{\circ}C$ for 1h. and $540^{\circ}C$ for 2 h. were determined similarly to be 3.8, 3.5, 4.7 and 3.9, respectively. The rest of the samples indicated higher Weibull moduli, which may be attributed to the formations of microcracks due to the mismatch in between newly formed crystals and remaining glassy matrix.

  • Interrupted creep tests for investigating the structural degradation during creep were conducted for a Mod.9Cr-1Mo steel in the range of stress from 71 to 167 MPa and temperature from 873 to 923 K. The change of hardness and tempered martensitic lath width was measured in grip and gauge parts of interrupted creep specimens. The lath structure was thermally stable in static conditions. However, it was not stable during creep, and the structural change was enhanced by creep strain. The relation between the change in lath width and creep strain was described quantitatively. The change in Vickers hardness was expressed by a single valued function of creep LCR(life consumption ratio). Based on the empirical relation between strain and lath width, a model was proposed to describe the relation between change in hardness and creep LCR. The comparison of the model with the empirical relation suggests that about 65% of hardness loss is due to the decrease of dislocation density accompanied by the movement of lath boundaries. The role of precipitates on subboundaries was discussed in connection with the abnormal subgrain growth appearing in low stress regime.

  • The effect of the pulse parameters(pulse ratio and frequency) on the characteristics of the nitrided layer in the pulsed plasma nitrified SCM435 Steels was investigated. Material properties of the nitrided layer were analysed by employing optical microscope, scanning electron microscope(SEM), X-ray diffractometer(XRD) and micro-Vickers hardness tester. It was found that both the compound layer thickness and the surface hardness decreased with decreasing of pulse ratios. At high pulse ratio, the compound layer thickness and the surface hardness were rapidly decreased with decreasing frequency compared to lower pulse ratios.
