  • Reduction of structure-borne noise in the compartment of a car is an important task in automotive engineering. Many methods which analyze noise transfer path have been generally used for structure-borne noise. These methods are useful in solving particular problem but do not quantify the effectiveness of vibration isolation for each isolator of a vehicle. To quantify the effectiveness of vibration isolation, the vibrational power flow measurement has been used for a simple isolation system or a laboratory based isolation system. This paper identifies the transfer path of booming noise in a SUV. The powertrain used for test has a in-line 4cylinder engine and 5-shift auto-transmission. This powertrain is transversely supported by four isolators. We calculated the energy flow throughout four isolator by the measurement of power flow and the contribution of energy flow at each isolator.

  • Recently, the underwater radiated noises generated from large commercial ships have become a globally important issue. Countries with large ports and environmental protection organizations demand strict safety guidelines in relation to underwater radiated noise. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and underwater radiated noise of a commercial ship. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the commercial ship, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the underwater radiation noise. The vibrational energy of the structure is treated as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM to calculate the underwater radiation noise. Numerical simulations are presented for the commercial ship under various frequencies, and reliable results are obtained.

  • A single degree of freedom system and transmissibility are key concepts in many problems of vibration isolation. In order to apply this approach, however, several assumptions must be satisfied, which are often not realistic. For examples, in practical systems, vibration transmissions at multi-point with multi-degree of freedom(translational and rotational DOF) take place and mobilities or impedances of receiver structures cannot be ignored any more especially over high frequency range. Therefore, a multi-dimensional treatment is required for accurate estimation of dynamic behavior of the system. In this paper, an approach using vibrational power flow is introduced to deal with analysis of multi-dimensional vibration isolation system in a more practical way and in aspects of vibration isolations and vibration path analysis. Procedures of this approach and some results of research for vibrational power path analysis with rotational terms included are presented. Difficulties in this method are also discussed.

  • The vibrational intensity and the dynamic response of a compound vibratory system had been controlled actively by means of a feedforward control method. A compound vibratory system consists of a flexible beam and two discrete systems - a vibrating source and a dynamic absorber. By considering the interactive motions between discrete systems and a flexible beam, the equations of motion for a compound vibratory system were derived using a method of variation of parameters. To define the optimal conditions of a controller the cost function, which denotes a time averaged power flow, was evaluated numerically. The possibility of reductions of both of vibrational intensity and dynamic response at a control point located at a distance from a source were fecund to depend on the positions of a source, a control point and a controller. Especially the presence of a dynamic absorber gives the more reduction on the dynamic response but the less on the vibrational intensity than those without a dynamic absorber.

  • This paper presents an experimental method to find the vibrational transmission characteristics of structures by using the structural intensity method which is used as the important techniques of active vibration control method. Experimental results are obtained from measurements performed on a structure beam by 2, 3 and 4 position linear accelerometr array (2, 3 and 4 structural intensity : 2, 3 and 4 S.I.) methods at near and farfield conditions. These results are compared with the measurement values of conventional power flow measurement method called input power measurement in order to verify the accuracy of structural intensity methods. To minimize the errors associated with 2, 3 and 4 S.I. methods, the measurement locations were selected by the result of modal analysis and the averaged data by the inter-change of accelerometer array was utilized. In 3 and 4 S.I. methods measured wavenumber instead of theoretical wavenumber was used. This paper shows that measurements of bending wave power flow by using 2, 3 and 4 S.I. methods can give accurate values under general field conditions in structural beam and the accuracy of 2, 3 S.I. methods is higher than 4 S.I. methods. Finally, 2 position linear accelerometer array method is suggested as the practical structural intensity technique.

  • The power flow analysis(PFA) has been performed to analyze the vibration of coupled plates excited by a point force in an arbitrry direction. The energy governing equations for longitudinal, shear and flexural waves were solved to predict the vibrational energy density and intensity. The wave transmission approach was used to consider the mode conversion at the joints of the coupled plates. Numerical results for energy density and intensity on the coupled plates were presented. Comparison of the results by PFA with exact results showed that PFA can be an effective tool to predict the spatial variation of the vibrational energy and intensity on the coupled plates at high frequencies.

  • To predict vibrational energy density and intensity of beam-plate coupled complex structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges, Power Flow Finite Element Method(PFFEM) programs for plate, beam and some coupled structural elements are developed. The flexural, longitudinal and shear waves in plates are formulated and the joint element equations for multi-couped plates are fully developed. Also the wave transmission approach has been introduced to cover the energy transmission and reflection at the joint elements. Using the developed PFFEM program, vibration analysis for 2300TEU container ship model is performed and here the model data for this program are obtained by converting fonner FE model for structural analysis. This program predicts successfully the vibrational energy density and intensity upto 8,000 Hz for the ship model with over 50,000 DOF.

  • Power flow analysis(PFA) is introduced for solving the noise and vibration analysis of system structures in medium-to-high frequency ranges. The vibration analysis software, $PFADS_{C++}$ R4 based on power flow finite element method(PFFEM) and the noise prediction software, $NASPFA_{C++}$ R1 based on power flow boundary element method(PFBEM) are developed. In this paper, the coupled PFFE/PFBE method is used to investigate the vibration and radiated noise of the rotary compressor. PFFEM is employed to analyze the vibrational responses of the rotary compressor, and PFBEM is applied to analyze the radiation noise around rotary compressor. The vibrational energy of the structure is used as an acoustic intensity boundary condition of PFBEM. Numerical simulations are presented for the rotary compressor, and reliable results have been obtained.

  • In this paper, the power flow analysis(PFA) method was developed to predict the vibrational responses of coupled co-planar orthotropic plates in frequencies ranging from medium to high. To cover the power transmission and reflection at the joint of the orthotropic plates, the wave transmission approach is applied with the assumption that all the incident waves are normal to the joint. Through numerical analyses, the power flow energy density and intensity fields of coupled co-planar orthotropic plates were compared with those of classical modal solutions by changing the frequency and internal loss factor, and they show good agreement in terms of the global decay and the attenuation patterns of the energy density.

  • In this work a method to detect the vibrational peak and to decide the vibrational mode of detected peak for core internal vibration monitoring system which is particularly concerned on the core support barrel (CSB) and fuel assemblies is developed. Flow induced vibration and aging process in the reactor internals cause unsoundness of the internal structure. In order to monitor the vibrational status of core internal, signals from the ex-core neutron detectors are transformed into frequency domain. By analyzing transformed frequency domain signal, an analyst can acquire the information on the vibrational characteristics of the structures, i.e., vibration frequencies of each component, vibrational level, modes of vibration, and the causes of the abnormal vibration, if any. This study is focused on the development of the automated monitoring system. Several methods are surveyed to define the peaks in power spectrum and fuzzy theory is used to automatic detection of the vibrational peaks. Fuzzy algorithm is adopted to define the modes of vibration using the peak values from fuzzy peak recognition, phase spectrum, and coherence spectrum.
