The proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) analysis of vibration of a steel frame structure is performed to extract modal parameters. The theoretical background of the POD method is introduced briefly, and this technique is further applied to free vibration displacements of one bay-two story steel frame structure to extract the modal parameters. From the POD analysis of the steel frame structure, it is found that important modal parameters such as true mode shapes, modal kinematic energy, natural frequencies, and damping ratios can be obtained for the building efficiently and in detail. Therefore, it is concluded that the POD method could be one of the useful techniques in analysis of vibration of structures.
The vibrations caused by metro operation propagate through surrounding soil, further induce secondary vibrations of the nearby underground structures and adjacent buildings. In order to investigate the effects of vibrations caused by metro on use performance of buildings, vibration experiment of Chengdu museum was carried out firstly. Then, the coupling tunnel-soil-structure finite element model was established with software ANSYS detailedly, providing a useful tool for investigating the vibration performances of structures. Furthermore, the dynamic responses and vibration predictions of museum building were obtained respectively by the whole process time-domain analysis and frequency-domain analysis, which were compared with the vibration reference values of museum. Quantitative analyses of the museum building performance were carried out, and the possible tendency and changing laws of vibration level with floors were proposed. Finally, the related vibration isolation measures were compared and discussed. The tests and analysis results show that: The vertical vibration responses almost increased with the increasing of building floors, while weak floors existed for the curve of horizontal vibration; The vertical vibrations were larger than the horizontal vibrations, indicating the vibration performances of building caused by metro were characterized with vertical vibrations; The frequencies of the museum corresponding to the peak vibration levels were around 6~17Hz; The damping effect of structure with 33m-span cantilever on vertical vibration was obvious, however, the damping effect of structure with foundation vibration isolators was not obvious.
It is a well known fact that the shaker used in the vibration test interacts with the test structure and thus influences the test results. A two degree of freedom model of shaker is suggested and the vibration parameters of this model is experimentally extracted. According to this experimental results, the vibration parameters of the shaker can vary with respect to the test structure as well as the stinger used in the connecting mechanism. It is also found that the vibration parameters of the shaker provided by the manufacturer can not be accurate and these parameter values should be revaluated based on the test environments.
In order to verify the effectiveness of adding visooelastic dampers to full-scale steel frame structure on the reduction of their seismic and wind response a experimental work was carried out. First, The test was conducted on the VE dampers subjected to sinusoidal excitations under a variety of ambient temperatures, frequency, and the damper strain. Results from these tests showed that the viscoelastic dampers have high energy dissipation capacity. Second, The vibration tests was conducted of the full-scale steel frame structure with md without added VE dampers at different temperatures. Viscoelastically damped full-scale structure test result on the effect of ambient temperature show that viscoelastic dampers are very effective in reducing excessive vibration of the structure due to sinusoidal excitation over a wide ringe of ambient temperature.
This paper is concerned with the vibration control of multi-layer structure for ultra-tall buildings and main tower of large bridge etc. We have modeled the multi-layer structure with the distributed mass system as the lumped mass system of two-degree-of-freedom structure and made experimental equipment. The $H_\infty$control theory was applied to the design of the control system. The designed control system was simulated by computer. As a result, the designed $H_\infty$controller showed the good vibration control performance to impulse response and frequency response.
A hybrid mount featuring elastic rubber and piezoelectric material is devised and applied to the vibration control of a beam structure. The governing equation of the beam structure associated with the hybrid mount is derived. Subsequently, a robust sliding mode controller is designed to attenuate the vibration of the beam structure due to external excitation. The controller is then simulated and control responses such as displatement and transmitted force are evaluated in time and frequency domains.
In this paper, a hybrid vibration-impedance-based damage monitoring approach is experimentally evaluated for prestressed concrete (PSC) structures with local strand breakage. Firstly, the hybrid monitoring scheme is designed to alert damage occurrence from changes in vibration characteristics and to localize strand breakage from changes in impedance signatures. Secondly, a full-scale PSC anchorage is experimented to measure global vibration responses and local impedance responses under a sequence of simulated strand-breakage events. Finally, the measured data are analyzed using the hybrid monitoring framework. The change of structural condition (i.e., damage extent) induced by the local strand breakage is estimated by changes in a few natural frequencies obtained from a few accelerometers in the structure. The damaged strand is locally identified by tomography analysis of impedance features measured via an array of PZT (lead-zirconate-titanate) sensors mounted on the anchorage. Experimental results demonstrate that the strand breakage in the PSC structure can be accurately assessed by using the combined vibration and impedance features.
Vibration and vibration-induced noise, major sources of occupant complaint, are increasing in modern buildings, Lighter weight construction and equipment located in penthouses or intermediate level mechanical rooms increase structure-bone vibration and noise transmission. In this paper discusses about testing vibration isolation systems and about the effectness of floor flexibility for vibration transmission.
In this study, dynamic characteristics of an end-capped hull structure with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators are studied. Finite element modeling is used to obtain practical governing equation of motion and boundary conditions of smart hull structure. Modal analysis is conducted to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the hull structure. Piezoelectric actuators are attached where the maximum control performance can be obtained. Active controller based on Linear Quadratic Gaussian (LQG) theory is designed to suppress vibration of smart hull structure. It is observed that closed loop damping can be improved with suitable weighting factors in the developed LQG controller.
