  • Urban railway vehicles operate in downtown areas. Due to increases in the number of passengers and changes in the service plans, railway vehicles are expected to operate on sharp curved tracks. However, on these tracks, the running stability of the railway vehicles is significantly decreased and the creepage is increased. Creepage causes the wheel/rail to wear and vibration. Therefore, reducing the creepage helps ensure the running stability and can be beneficial for the environment and cost. In this paper, the longitudinal creepage is analyzed using a railway vehicle model on a sharp curved track. Furthermore, in order to minimize the problems when a railway vehicle runs on a sharp curved track, the characteristics of a bogie are optimized using response optimization.

  • The high stability of the interference pattern is very important in the case of measuring interference when a phase noise like a vibration occurs in the measuring environment. In this paper, we proposed the method of phase noise filtering by BaTiO$_3$ with the characteristic of SPPCM. Also, a beam with a shape of an ellipse was incident into BaTiO$_3$ by using the tilted lens so as to improve the reflectivity and the response time. And we confirmed the result by optical experiment.

  • This research aims to develop an algorithm of optimal transducer placement for health monitoring of large structural system. The structural vibration response-based health monitoring is considered one of the best for the system which requires a long-term, continuous monitoring. In its experimental modal testing, however, it is difficult to decide on the measurement locations and their number, especially for complex structures, which have a major influence on the quality of the results. In order to minimize the number of sensing operations and optimize the transducer location while maximizing the accuracy of results, this paper discusses about an optimum transducer placement criterion suitable for the identification of structural damage for continuous health monitoring. As a criterion algorithm, it proposes the Kinetic Energy Optimization Technique (EOT), and then addresses the numerical issues which are subsequently applicable to actual experiment where a bridge model is used. By using the experimental data, it compares the EOT with the EIM(Effective Indefence Method) which is generally used to optimize the transducer placement for the damage identification and control purposes. The comparison conclusively shows that the EOT algorithm proposed in this paper is preferable when a structure is to be instrumented with fewer sensors for monitoring purpose.

  • Taipei 101 Tower, which has 101 stories with height of 508 m, is located in Taipei where typhoons and earthquakes commonly occur. It is currently the second tallest building in the world. Therefore, the dynamic performance of the super-tall building under strong wind actions requires particular attentions. In this study, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) integrated with a new inflow turbulence generator and a new sub-grid scale (SGS) model was conducted to simulate the wind loads on the super-tall building. Three-dimensional finite element model of Taipei 101 Tower was established and used to evaluate the wind-induced responses of the high-rise structure based on the simulated wind forces. The numerical results were found to be consistent with those measured from a vibration monitoring system installed in the building. Furthermore, the equivalent static wind loads on the building, which were computed by the time-domain and frequency-domain analysis, respectively, were in satisfactory agreement with available wind tunnel testing results. It has been demonstrated through the validation studies that the numerical framework presented in this paper, including the recommended SGS model, the inflow turbulence generation technique and associated numerical treatments, is a useful tool for evaluation of the wind loads and wind-induced responses of tall buildings.

  • Bellows are mechanical components which prevent the damage of system by absorption of the vibration and the displacement of axle and radial direction. Thermal piping system is expanded by the fluid of the high temperature from the heat engine inside. At this time, bellows prevent the damage of the piping due to the thermal expansion. Recently, design of bellows is required to fit some other operational environments which are not suggested in the E.J.M.A code book. And it is difficult to produce and to maintain bellows of high temperature and high pressure bemuse of its complicated shape and this causes the manufacturing cost to rise. The objective of this study is to determine optimum shape of bellows which can endure in the high temperature and high pressure. The maximum stress has an effect on the fatigue life of bellows, therefore it needs to be minimized. This study attempts to find a shape which minimizes the stress occurring in the bellows by the design of experiment. The model used in this study is not presented in the E.J.M.A code book, therefore, from the result of design of experiment we find the factors which give effects on the characteristic value and we presents the recession model using the RSM, which can predict the characteristic values depending on the change of factor values.

  • This study evaluated the effect of vibration, level of lateral yielding strength, site conditions, ductility factor, strain-hardening ratio, and post-capping ratio of the strength limited bilinear SDF systems on the inelastic displacement ratio. The nonlinear response history analysis was conducted using 240 ground motions which were collected at the sites classified as site classes B, C, and D according to the NEHRP. To account for the P-$\Delta$ effects, this study considered negative stiffness ratios ranging from -0.1 to -0.5 of elastic stiffness. Four different damping ratios are used: 2, 5, 10, and 20%. From this study, an equation of inelastic displacement ratio was proposed using nonlinear regression analysis.

  • MIRIS (Multipurpose Infra-Red Imaging System) is the first Korean Infrared Space Telescope developed by KASI (Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute), and is the main payload of STSAT-3 (Science and Technology Satellite-3). The FM (fight model) of MIRIS has been recently completed, and various performance tests have been made to measure system parameters such as readout noise, system gain, linearity, and dark current. Final thermal-vacumm test of the MIRIS and the vibration test of the electronics box have been performed. Band response tests showed good agreement with the initial design requirements. No significant dark difference was measured within the expected temperature variation range during observation in orbit. Using Pa-alpha band from a uniform source, the readout noise and system gain were measured by mean variance test. To obtain uniform flat image, flat fielding tests were made for each band, and the data will be compared to that obtained in orbit for calibration. The final version of MIRIS FM will be delivered in March, and it will be integrated into the satellite system for the AIT (Assembly Integration, Test) procedure. The launch of MIRIS is expected in November 2012.

  • Improvement of the thermal efficiency in operation and maintenance of low- and medium-speed engines is a kind of never-ending requirement in the maritime power plant business. For the purpose of improving engine management efficiency, a principal factor that represents the fitness of the engine should be identified. Gas pressure, gas temperature, and vibration have all been used as this factor. However, they have limitations in terms of response speed and diagnosis accuracy. The EFR (engine fitness ratio) is suggested as a new diagnostic factor in this paper. The EFR is defined as the ratio of particular frequencies in the frequency domain and represents the fitness of an engine. It is calculated from the fluctuation pattern of the crankshaft angular speed. The EFR was verified using an experimental method for a low-speed engine and an analytic method for a medium-speed engine.

  • To verify applicability of multi-dimensional spectral analysis (MDSA) fur noise source identification two different approaches which are frequency response and coherent function have been investigated. The coherence function approach appears able to separate the correlated system when the noise sources were coherent. In this study, we identify contribution of structure-borne-noise of vehicle HVAC system using MDSA method. Firstly, to identify the applicability of MDSA method, 4-inputs of vehicle HVAC system were the signals measured by accelerometers attached on the selected noise sources which were composed of blower, evaporator, heater and duct. While 1-output which was driver's position sound was the SPL signals measured by a remote microphone, when the blower motor was operating. We identify efficiency of systems modeled with four Inputs/single output through ordinary coherence function (OCF) and partial coherence function (PCF). As a result of experiment, the blower accounted for $62-88\%$ of the overall level of sound energy density. Also, according to the analysis of acoustic signal and vibration signals measurement, an investigation of the noise source identification in the vehicle HVAC is presented. With the sound intensity method, the major sources of the vehicle HVAC radiation are verified. Also the method of improving the noise reduction is proposed by attaching damping patch access to blower motor and noise reduction is verified.
