  • A method of damage detection based on the moving harmonic excitation and continuous wavelet transforms is presented. The applied excitation is used as a moving actuator and its frequency and speed parameters can be adjusted for an amplified response. The continuous wavelet transforms, CWT, is used for cracks detection based on the resulting amplified signal. It is demonstrated that this identification procedure is largely better than the classical ones based on eigenfrequencies or on the eigenmodes wavelet transformed. For vibration responses, free and forced vibration analyses of multi-cracked beams are investigated based on both analytical and numerical methodological approaches. Cracks are modeled through rotational springs whose compliances are evaluated using linear elastic fracture mechanics. Based on the obtained forced responses, multi-cracks positions are accurately identified and the CWT identification can be highly improved by adjusting the frequency and the speed excitation parameters.

  • The relation between the vibration induced from machinery and the radiated sound is complicated. Acoustic intensity method is widely used to obtain the accuracy of noise measurement and noise identification. In this study, as groundwork, the complex acoustic intensity method is performed to identify noise source and transmission path on different free space point source fields. As an industrial application, the complex acoustic intensity method is applied to HVAC to identify sound radiation characteristics in the near field. Experimental complex acoustic intensity method was applied to HVAC, it is possible to identify noise sources in complicated sound field characteristics which noise sources are related with each other, and certificate the validity of complex acoustic intensity. Especially, it can be seen that complex acoustic intensity method using both of active and reactive intensity is vital in devising a strategy for identification of noise. Also, the vector flow of acoustic intensity was investigated to identify sound intensity distributions and energy flow in the near field of HVAC.

  • In this research, Forced Vibration Test(FVT) on a cable stayed bridge was conducted to examine the validity of the frequency domain pattern recognition method using signal anomaly index and artificial neuralnetwork. 7he considering structure, Samchunpo Bridge, located in Sachun-Shi, Kyungsangnam-Do, is a cable stayed bridge with the 436 meter span. The excitation force was induced by a sudden braking of a fully loaded truck. and vortical acceleration signals were acquired at 14 points. The initial 2-dimensional FE-model was developed from the design documents to prepare the training sets for the artificial neural network, and then the model calibration was performed with the field test data. As a result of the model calibration, we obtained the FFT spectrums from the model simulation, which was similar to those from the vibration test. These tests and the simulation data will be used for the structural identification using arbitrarily added masses to the bridge.

  • This paper introduces a new technique that can extract natural frequencies and damping ratios from output-only vibration data. Firstly, the free vibration data is obtained from the cross correlations of the output-only response data using a singular value decomposition process. Secondly, the well-known system identification algorithm is applied to extract the natural frequencies and damping ratios from the extracted free vibration data. Comparing to ERADC technique, the accuracy of the proposed modal parameter identification algorithm has been numerically examined. Furthermore, the practicability of the proposed algorithm has been examined through the output-only acceleration data collected from the Seohae cable-stayed bridge. Using the proposed technique, total 24 modes have been identified for the deck plate motions of the bridge.

  • Asymmetry of rotor systems is an important factor for identification of dynamic characteristics including the stability and response of rotors and for condition monitoring. In this work, asymmetry of rotors is identified by applying curve-fitting method to the directional frequency response functions (dFRFs), which are known as a powerful tool for detecting the presence and degree of asymmetry. This method minimizes least square error between analytical and measured dFRFs by iteratively updating physical parameters associated with rotor asymmetry. The effectiveness of the identification method is demonstrated by experiments with a laboratory test rotor.

  • This paper presents a system identification method for multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) systems, by which a rational polynomial transfer function model is identified from experimentally determined frequency response function data. Analytically determined information is incorporated in this method to obtain a more reliable model, even in the frequency range where the excitation energy is limited. To verify the suggested method, shaking table test for an actively controlled two-story, bench-scale building employing an active mass damper is conducted. The results show that the proposed method is quite effective and robust for system identification of MIMO systems.

  • The structural health monitoring has been gaining more importance in civil engineering areas such as earthquake and wind engineering. The use of health monitoring system can also provide tools for the validation of structural analytical model. However, only few structures such as historical buildings and some important long bridges have been instrumented with structural monitoring system due to high cost of installation, long and complicated installation of system wires. In this paper, the structural monitoring system based on cheap and wireless monitoring system is investigated. The use of advanced technology of micro-electro-mechanical system(MEMS) and wireless communication can reduce system cost and simplify the installation. Further the application of wireless MEMS system can provide enhanced system functionality and due to low noise densities. Identification results are compared to ones using data measured from traditional accelerometers and results indicate that the system identification using wireless MEMS system estimates system parameters accurately.

  • In this paper, an integrated damage identification system (IDIS) is proposed to locate and size damage in real structures. The application of the IDIS to real structures includes the measurement of modal responses, the construction of damage-detection models, and the implementation of measurements and models into the damage-detection process. Firstly, the theory of the damage identification method is outlined. Secondly, the schematic and each component of the IDIS are described. Finally, the practicality of the IDIS is verified from experiments on two different bridge-models, a model plate-grider and a model truss.

  • This paper analyzes the effectiveness of minimizing vibration and sound transmission on/through a thin rectangular plate by both feedback control and hybrid control which combines adaptive feedforward control with a feedback loop. An experimental system identification technique using the matrix-fractional curve-fitting of the frequency response data is introduced for complex shaped structures. This identification technique reduces the model order o the MIMO(Multi-Input Multi-Output) system which simplifies the practical implementation. The adaptive feedforward control uses a Multiple filtered-x LMS(Least Mean Square) algorithm and the feedback control uses a multivariable digital LQG(Linear Quadratic Gaussian) algorithm. Experimental results show that an effective reduction of sound transmission is achieved by the hybrid control scheme when both vibration and noise measurement signals are incorporated in the controller.
