A Study on Hardware Implementation of a VSB Equalization System (VSB 등화시스템의 하드웨어 구현방법에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we describe hardware implementation of VSB (Vestigial SideBand) mo-dulation equalization systems for HDTV (High Definition TeleVision). By modifying an adaptive equalization algorithm, we propose a hardware architecture with a low hardware cost and the performance close to floating-point operations. We also employ the pipeline concept to reduce the hardware cost. The effectiveness of the proposed hardware architecture is de- monstrated through computer simulation and the optimization result of VHDL circuit descriptions.

  • In this paper, we present an equalization scheme for 8-VSB signals for the ATSC DTV system. We propose a complex feedback filter and complex feedback sample generator for DFE to equalize 8-VSB signals in order to efficiently remove multipath distortions causing leakages from the qudrature component. We show that the proposed structure outperforms the conventional DFE used for the digital VSB which uses a real-valued feedback filter with real-valued decisions.

  • DTV(Digital Television)라 일컬어지는 방송 방식은 미국의 경우 지상파를 이용하여 압축된 영상신호와 음성신호를 방송 및 수신을 하기 위한 것으로 ATSC(Advanced Television System Committees)가 규격을 제안하고 FCC(Federal Communications Commission)가 수용하여 현실화 되어졌다. ATSC 산하의 다양한 Working Group에서는 방송국, 방송장비업체, 가전업체 등이 제안함으로써 규격화하여 전송부는 VSB(Vestigial Side-band), 영상압축은 MPEG2, 음성압축은 AC3로 결정하였다. 본 고에서는 ATSC의 규격에 따라 송신되어지는 방송을 수신할 수 있도록 채널복조와 영상 및 음성신호를 복호화 할 수 있는 수신 시스템의 구성과 테스트 결과를 살펴보고자 한다.

  • In this paper, we have studied the 8 YSB (8 Vestigial Side Band) method which is decided as the standard of modulators for next generation digital TV System. In developing digital TV System, one of the difficult problems is how digital signal can be transmitted to the receiver without any phase distortion. But, phase error is liable to occur by imperfect design, circumstance variation and device degradation. These characteristics result in distortion of 1,0 signal of modulator and interference in adjacent channels. In particular, the interference in modulator of a high power amplifier result in serious problems in adjacent channels. Here we analyzed problems of phase error which are occurred when 8 levels digital signals are modulated to If signal. And we suggested phase error compensation algorithm and discussed the results for adaptation of the algorithm

  • In this Paper, a new DCT HLMS DFE(Discrete Cosine Transform Hierarchical Least Mean Square Decision Feedback Equalizer) algorithm is proposed to improve the convergence speed and MSE(Mean Square Error) performance of a receive channel equalizer in ATSC(Advanced Television System Committee) 8VSB(Vestigial Side Band) digital terrestrial TV system. The proposed algorithm reduces the eigenvalue range of input data autocorrelation by transforming LMS (Least Mean Square) DFE into the subfilter of hierarchical structure. Moreover, the use of DCT and power estimation algorithm makes it possible to reduce the eigenvalue deviation of input data which results from distortion and delay of the receive signal in the miulti-path environment. Simulation results show that proposed DCT HLMS DFE has SNR improvement of approximately 3.8dB, 5dB and 2dB as compared to LMS DFE when the equalized symbol error rate is 0.2 in ATTC defined digital terrestrial TV broadcasting channels A, B and F, respectively.

  • Digital TV tuner for 8-VSB modulation was developed with satisfying the requirements of ATSC. Double frequency conversion and active tracking filter was used in order to suppress IF beat and image band, which results in reducing the interference between adjacent channels and multi-channels. The implemented digital TV tuner has excellent performance such as the wide dynamic range, good flatness in passing band, and low phase noise. The developed tuner is available to handle the digital and analogue television signal at the same time.

  • We analyze mathematically a VSB (vestigial side-band) transceiver system for the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC) digital television standard and extract a near-baseband equivalent VSB channel model. This model shows the multi-path fading effect of the quadrature component on the in-phase component. Also, we obtain a simplified model of the VSB transceiver system, which is represented by convolution of the transmission signal (before modulation) and the VSB channel. This simplified model is efficiently used for simulation of VSB systems to improve its performances, especially in an equalization part. Applying the DTV channel specifications tested by the Advanced Television Test Conter (ATTC) to the channel model, we obtain an equivalent VSB channel and show the equalization result by using the conventional derision-feedback equalize (DFE).

Complex Infinite Impulse Response Filter Equalization for Digital Vestigial Side Band Signals

  • In this paper, we propose a complex-valued IIR filter for digital VSB signals based on CMA in order to efficiently mitigate multipath distortions, especially the leakage from the quadrature component. The proposed equalizer overcomes the drawback of the conventional real-valued IIR equalizers that it attempts to equalize Hilbert transform of quadrature component. We demonstrate via simulation that the proposed complex IIR filter successfully mitigates the leakages from the quadrature component, while the conventional real IIR filter requires a longer IIR filter to achieve the same performance. We present cost function analysis for a simple two-tap case showing that the proposed IIR equalizer with CMA for VSB signals has a global minimum at the desired location.

  • The DTV (Digital TV) tuner for an 8-VSB (Vestigial Side-Band) modulation was developed to meet the requirements of the ATSC (Advanced Television Systems Committee). The double frequency conversion and the active tracking filter in the front-end were used to cancel interferences between adjacent channels and multi-channels by suppressing the IF beat and the Image frequency. However, It was impossible to get frequency mapping between the tracking filter and the first VCO (Voltage Controlled Oscillator) in the existing DTV tuner structure which differs from the NTSC (National Television Systems Committee) tuner. This paper, therefore, suggests an assailable structure and a new method for the automatic frequency selection by mapping the frequency characteristics over the tracking voltage and the combined HW which is composed of a Micro-controller, an EEPROM (Electrically Erasable Programmable Read Only Memory), a DAC (Digital-to-Analog Converter), an OP amplifier, and a switch driver.

  • 본 논문에서는, 지상파 3D HDTV 방송 전송을 위한 VSB(Vestigial Side Band) 변조방식의 심벌 타이밍 및 반송파 동기부 구조를 제안하고 그 성능을 검증해 보았다. 제안하는 동기부의 동작은 다음과 같다. 먼저 반송파 주파수 옵셋에 독립적인 심벌 타이밍 복구 알고리즘으로 타이밍 동기를 이룬다. 그리고 제안하는 프레임 검출 방법으로 프레임의 시작점을 알아내고, 반송파 주파수 옵셋 복구에 필요한 훈련 열을 얻어낸다. 마지막으로, 얻어진 훈련 열을 이용하여 반송파 주파수 옵셋과 반송파 위상 옵셋을 복구한다. 컴퓨터 모의실험 결과, 제안하는 동기부 구조는 이상적으로 동기를 이루었을 때의 BER(bit error rate)성능과 근접한 성능을 나타내었다.
