  • Angiogenesis is a complex, multistep process involving dynamic changes in endothelial cell (EC) shapes and behaviors, especially in specialized cell types such as tip cells (with active filopodial extensions), stalk cells (with less motility) and phalanx cells (with stable junction connections). The Hippo-Yes-associated protein (YAP)/ transcription activator with PDZ binding motif (TAZ) signaling plays a critical role in development, regeneration and organ size by regulating cell-cell contact and actin cytoskeleton dynamics. Recently, with the finding that YAP is expressed in the front edge of the developing retinal vessels, Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling has emerged as a new pathway for blood vessel development. Intriguingly, the LATS1/2-mediated angiomotin (AMOT) family and YAP/TAZ activities contribute to EC shapes and behaviors by spatiotemporally modulating actin cytoskeleton dynamics and EC junction stability. Herein, we summarize the recent understanding of the role of Hippo-YAP/TAZ signaling in the processes of EC sprouting and junction maturation in angiogenesis.

  • According to amendments of ship safety act which comes into force from 4 Nov. 2007, the amended stability criteria should be applied to the small vessels of 12m or more in length. In this paper, the dimensions of domestic small vessels and the casualty reports of capsizing accidents are analyzed. And 58 ships are sampled, modeled for the investigation of the stability performance. Based on the regression analysis of the model ship's allowable metacentric-heights under several stability requirements, stability criteria for small fishing vessels and cargo ships are proposed.

  • Patient with aortic valvular disease have increased left ventricular work and greater myocardial oxygen demand, which may aggravate the effect of concomitant coronary artery disease. Thus in patient who repair aortic valve replacement, concomitant aortocoronary bypass surgery is often performed when angiographically significant coronary artery disease is present. This approach is supported by reports that revascularization does not increase operative risk when associated coronary artery disease is present and significantly reduce the occurrence of late sudden death. Recently we have experienced one case of aortic valve replacement concomitant with aorta-coronary bypass surgery. The patient was 56 year-old male and admitted with complaint of anterior chest pain especially during his exercise. He was diagnosed as aortic valve stenosis and regurgitation [GIII] with proximal right main coronary artery occlusion We performed aortic valve replacement with aorta coronary bypass surgery by use of saphenous vein. Post operative course was uneventful and chest pain was relieved. Post operative coronary angiogram disclosed good patency of grafted vessel.

  • This article reports a spontaneous thoracic teratoma in a laying hen (Deklb brown warren). In this case, a 40 days old hen was submitted for necropsy as part of an investigation into a flock problem suspected Marek's disease to Chonbuk Veterinary Service Laboratory in 1983. On the gross finding, mass was In the cranial subpulmonary cavity and attached to the vertebral column. It contained fully developed contour feathers. Histologically, feathers were arised from feather follicles complete with arrector plumi muscle, nerve, vessel and mucous gland composed with simple tall columnar epithelium. The outer surface of mass was lined by keratinized or nonkeratinized stratified squamous epithelium. It converted to pseudostratified ciliated columnar epithelium in some area. There were lymphocyte infiltration around gland tissue and eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies in nonkeratinized epithelium. This thoracic teratoma was composed of ectodermal origin, squamous epithelium and nerve, and endodermal origin, mucous gland. This case in laying hen has never been reported in the literature in the world.

  • Recently, reports of marine accidents of small fishing vessels less than 10 tons have been increasing. In this study, the characteristics of the motion response in regular waves were analyzed using computations for these ships. Small vessels less than 10 tons are classified by size and used for marine accident investigations. Therefore, the motion response analysis was performed on three small fishing vessels of different sizes. In the case of the head sea, it was confirmed that as the speed of the vessel increased in the long wavelength region, the motion responses of heave and pitch became large. The motion response of the smallest 3-ton fishing vessel was greater than that of the other sizes of fishing vessels. The maximum value of the roll motion shifted to the long wavelength region as the speed gradually increased in the bow sea, regardless of the size of the ship. In all the three small fishing vessels, it was found that the roll motion was the greatest at 15 knots, the highest speed in both bow and beam seas. When sailing in the head sea and bow sea conditions, lowering the speed is one of the effective approaches to reduce the effects of the vertical and lateral plane motions. The roll motion caused by the beam wave showed a tendency to increase rapidly only at a specific wavelength regardless of the speed and the size of the vessel. It was confirmed that the roll motion was significantly reduced with forward speed in the stern wave compared to the bow wave. As there is a specific region where the maximum value of the hull motion response appears depending on the size and speed of the ship, an operation method that can minimize the effect of this motion should be considered and implemented.

  • In maritime accidents, collisions involving fishing vessels are more frequent and severe than those involving other types of vessels. Previous cases of collision accidents caused by fishing vessels causing serious damage implied that fishing vessels maintained high speeds until just before the collision and that they collided with much larger vessels. This study investigated the correlation between the severity of ship damage resulting from fishing vessel collisions and the vessel's speed. The effective impact speed commonly used in the road transport sector was utilized to analyze ship collision accidents. The study collected collision data between fishing vessels and between fishing vessels and non-fishing vessels from accident investigation reports from 2016 to 2022. The effective impact speed was calculated for a total of 617 vessels. After using binary and multinomial logistic regression methodology, the analysis was carried out with effective impact speed as the independent variable and severity of accident as the dependent variable. The analysis revealed a statistically significant correlation between the effective impact speed and the severity of ship damage, indicating that the severity of ship damage is influenced not only by the effective impact speed but also by the tonnage of the vessel.

  • Recently, as the importance of the interior noise in a ship cabin has risen, ship builders have becomeconcerned about the use of noise reduction panels to reduce cabin noise. The results of previous researches have been based on analytical and experimental methods using simple sandwich panels. However, panel structures are becoming more complex to improve the transmission loss. Thus, researches that analyze the transmission loss of a panel are reaching the limit of study. This paper reports on research that was performed to determine the sound transmission characteristics of multi-complex panels applicable to high value-added vessels. It presents comparisons between analytical methods and experimental results by using a mini-reverberant chamber with components of sound attenuation panels, including the core and surface materials. The sound transmission loss of multi-complex panels are also analyzed in terms of the influences of the inside perforate plates and air gap thickness on the attenuation. Finally, the multi-complex panel with the highest noise attenuation is proposed based on the analysis results and experimental results in mini-reverberant chamber, which wereverified using a real-size reverberant chamber.

  • Bovine angiogenin (bAng) is a potent blood vessel inducing protein purified from cow In ilk. fluorescence spectroscopy has been used to study the interaction of bAng with actin in 50 mM Tris-HCl pH 7.5, and 1 mM $CaCl_2$ at $25^{\circ}C$. Actin contains four tryptophans but bAng contains no tryptophans. A 50% decrease in intrinsic fluorescence accompanied formation of the bAng/actin complex. By contrast, the interaction of RNase A, a homologous protein to bAng, with actin results in about 10% quenching of the fluorescence. Fluorescence titration experiments were performed by adding increasing concentrations of bAng (0~1.0 ${\mu}M$) to a constant concentration of actin (0.1 ${\mu}M$), and the dissociation constant $K_d$ for the bAng/actin complex and the stoichiometry n were measured as $20{\pm}1$ nM and $1.0{\pm}0.1$ respectively. These results suggest that the interaction between bAng with actin is specific and that quenching of actin fluorescence has occurred in the bAng/actin complex. The bAng binding sites of actin are discussed in the results of this study, and we propose that Trp-80 in the small domain of bovine actin is responsible for the bAng/actin binding.
