The ultimate settlement of soft clay consists of three parts: $\circled1$ immediate settlement, S$\sub$d/; $\circled2$ Primary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$c/; $\circled3$ Secondary consolidation settlement, S$\sub$s/. In general, S$\sub$c/ can be accurately calculated by one-dimensional consolidation and S$\sub$s/ or S$\sub$d/ may be ignored. This paper focuses on a calculation method to estimate the immediate settlement induced by lateral deformation of subgrade, to which shear stress is applied by embankment on soft ground. Immediate settlement and consolidation settlement are discussed by comparing the field measurement of the Yangsan test embankment on treated soft foundation by vertical paper drains.
The Prefabricated Vertical Drains (PVDs) method is one of the most widely used techniques to accelerate the consolidation process in-situ and hence increase its bearing capacity. In this paper, the degree of consolidation incorporated with PVDs was evaluated in O construction work site which composed with dredged soil. O Program PVD(Version 2.3) which developed by Asian Institute of Technology was used. The purpose of this analysis is efficiently to estimate the degree of consolidation by analyzing the surface settlement with time, and drainage at initial stage and final stage by using design-parameter which based on the in-situ tests and laboratory tests. This result can be compared with analysis of the degree of consolidation using Program PVD(Version 2.3) and the field observed data in the future studies.
Construction of high-speed concrete track embankments over soft ground needs many of the ground improvement techniques. Drains, surcharge loading, and geosynthetic reinforcement, have all been used to solve the settlement and embankment stability issues associated with construction on soft soils. However, when time constraints are critical to the success of the project, another measures should be considered. Especially, since the design criteria of residual settlement is limited as 30mm for concrete track embankment, it is very difficult to satisfy this allowable settlement by using the former construction method. Pile net method consist of vertical columns that are designed to transfer the load of the embankment through the soft compressible soil layer to a firm foundation and one or more layers of geosynthetic reinforcement placed between the top of the columns and the bottom of the embankment. In this paper, three cases with different embankment height and number of geosynthetic reinforcement, were studied through FEM analysis for efficient use of pile net method.
Embankment preloading, in conjunction with prefabricated vertical (PV) drains, was used to accelerate consolidation of marine clays in Pusan New Harbour project. UP to eightteen settlement plates were installed at the ground reclamated site under the embankment fill to monitor the preload performance. This analysis is carried out by five settlement prediction methods including the Asaoka, Hyperbolic, Hoshino, and back-analysis method based on optimization. The field settlement data can be analysed by settlement prediction methods to predict the ultimate settlement and the degree of consolidation of the reclaimed land under charge fill. The authors compared with the analyzed results of the methods.
An attempt has been made to summarize some of the unique geotechnical problems encountered during construction of a few large man-made islands recently completed off the coast of Osaka Bay, Japan. Large settlements appear to be the most serious problem both during and after construction. Settlements due to consolidation of a thick layer of soft alluvial clay that constitutes seabed seem to virtually cease within a relatively short period of time when vertical drains are installed adequately prior to fill placement. Settlements due to compression of underlying thick diluvial deposits consisting of layers of stiff clays interbedded with coarse-grained soils, however, continue over a prolonged period of time and call for special provisions for structures built on the artificial islands to cope with relatively large future settlements. Although accurate settlement prediction is not possible, it is both technically and economically feasible, nevertheless, to construct large-scale islands. Partjcularly attractive and promising is creation of sizable new areas for various purposes, immediately adjacent to highly-developed, densely-populated cities situated along the coast such as those around Osaka Bay.
