Seismic performance evaluation systems require rational classification of structure systems, proper evaluation criteria, and their scoring index for synthesis. Current seismic performance systems need expert judgments based on collection of available data, approximate analysis of important items, and various scoring system. This study presents a three-step seismic performance evaluation system for building structures in Korea. Each evaluation step determines the seismic performance and the method depends on the degree of refinement of analysis. The preliminary step evaluation involves the global attributes of structures such as vertical irregularity, asymmetric plan, redundancy, and age of structures. The second step requires an elastic analysis for estimation of forces acting on critical sections and checks the strength and ductility. The final step requires inelastic capacity of structures. Each stephas own evaluation scheme with proper weighing factor dependent on the importance and consequence. This study applies the fuzzy theory to a scoring method that synthesizes the individual quantity to a representative value.
Purpose: Balance and gait dysfunction caused by aging affect elderly individuals' independent life, which, in turn, can reduce their overall quality of life. The purpose of this study is to compare the differences in the vestibular function of healthy elderly and young adults based on the subjective visual vertical (SVV) test as well as to compare and analyze the gait ability between these two groups to study the differences and association between vestibular, dizziness, and balance ability. Methods: The subjects were 18 young and 16 elderly adults with no neurological or musculoskeletal damage. To evaluate vestibular function, a subjective visual vertical test was performed. To evaluate the gait function, the step time, step length, stride length, stance phase ratio, and swing phase ratio were measured. Balance was evaluated using the Berg Balance Scale (BBS), and dizziness was evaluated using a dizziness handicap inventory (DHI). Results: There were significant differences in the SVV, BBS, and DHI between the young and elderly adults (p < 0.05). The gait variables of the older adults were all significantly different (except for the swing phase ratio) than those of the young adults (p < 0.05). As the result of correlation analysis, the SVV values of the young adults showed a significant negative correlation with step length and stride length (p < 0.05), while the SVV values of the elderly adults only showed a significant positive correlation with the DHI (p < 0.05). Conclusion: The elderly appeared to show a decrease in vestibular function when compared to the young adults, and it is thought that walking and balance function declined, while dizziness increased. Moreover, it is believed that these results can be used as basic data for vestibular rehabilitation in the future.
The pump safety related to the functions in nuclear power plants must be designed to meet load conditions considering seismic requirements. In order to satisfy both structural integrity and operability of these pumps, the initial step in the seismic qualification is to establish the resonant frequencies of the structure. Applications are made to the design of the vertical and horizontal type pump. Computational results are analyzed with respect to the dynamic characteristics and are compared to the expected design requirements.
This paper presents the method for the decision of eye states using the eye blink in video sequences. The entire procedure consists of two steps: in the first step, the accurate eye position is found in the input image by using symmetry information of faces and projection, and in the second step, the eye open/close state is decided by the horizontal and vertical projection. The method in this paper is also used for detecting drivers' fatigue in the drowsiness detection system.
This paper presents how redevelopment of the boundary layer in a backward-facing step flow is affected by boundary conditions imposed on velocity at the inlet, top and exit of the flow. A two-dimensional, laminar, incompressible flow over a backward-facing step with an open top boundary has been computed by using numerical methods of second-order time and spatial accuracy and a fractional-step method that guarantees a divergence-free velocity field at all time. The inlet velocity profile above the step is of Blasius type. Along the top boundary, shear-tree and Dirichlet conditions on the streamwise velocity were considered and at the exit fully-developed and convective boundary conditions were examined. (The vertical velocity at all boundaries were assumed to be zero explicitly or implicitly.) From the computed flow fields, the reattachment on the bottom side of shear layer separated from the tip of the step and succeeding redevelopment of the boundary layer were investigated.

Lead zirconate titanate (PZT) thin films were fabricated by the pulsed laser ablation deposition (PLAD) method onto Pt/Ti/SiO$_2$/Si substrates. Crystalline phases as well as preferred orientations in PZT films were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD). The well-crystallized perovskite phase and the (101) preferred orientation were obtained by two-step annealing at the conditions of $650^{\circ}C$, 1 hour. It was found that the temperature for the pulsed laser ablated PZT films annealed via a two-step annealing process can be reduced 20$0^{\circ}C$ compared to that of the conventional three-step annealing temperature profile for enhancing the transformation of the perovskite phase. The remanent polarization and the coercive field of this film were about 20 $\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 46 kV/cm, while the dielectric constant and loss values measured at 1 KHz were approximately 860 and 0.04, respectively. The interesting phenomena of this film, such as vertical shift in hysteresis curve, are also discussed.
The flow and heat transfer characteristics behind a backward facing step located in a vertical channel has been studied. In this study, the numerical prediction has been performed by solving the Navier-Stokes equation and energy equation simultaneously with the SIMPLE algorithm embedied in TEACH code. Local heat flux was measured by using Schlieren Interferometer. The flow visualization was performed using the cylindrical lens and the laser beam that is scattered by the supplied glycerine particles. The velocity and temperature distributions, recirculation region, reattachment length, and local heat flux are obtained under the various parameters to investigate the buoyancy effect on the flow and heat transfer characteristics behind the step.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematics of the women's triple jump event at the 2011 Daegu World a Chmpionships by comparing them to those of the 2009 Berlin World Championships. The kinematic data were gathered from two steps before take off to the landing using a 7-camera panorama system. The data were then divided into 3 phases for each of the 8 participants. Similar average results were found the final contestants in the Daegu and Berlin championships, 14.58 m and 14.51 m, respectively. The first step had a relatively short length percentage (29%) compared to the hop and jump (36% and 35%, respectively). At the take off, the horizontal velocity was the lowest for the step, followed by the hop and jump. These results were different from the results for the men, who had an order of hop, step, and jump. Overall, in a comparison of the Daegu and Berlin participants, the vertical speed at take off for the three events was reduced compared to the horizontal speed.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the kinematics of the men's triple jump at the 2011 Daegu World Championships by comparing the results to those at the 2009 Berlin World Championships. The kinematic data were gathered from two steps before take off to the landing using a seven panorama system, and these data were divided into 3 phases for 8 participants. The average jump for the finalists was longer in the Daegu championships (17.46 m) than in the Berlin championships (17.28 m). The longest jump record was increased by 23 cm. The step was the longest at 36% of the total distance, followed by the hop at 30% and the jump at 34%. The first and third phases were substantially longer than the second phase (the step). The horizontal speed at take-off increased in the order hop, step, and jump. Overall, in comparison with the results from Berlin, the horizontal velocity increased, the vertical velocity decreased, and the landing angle decreased.
