  • The purpose of this work is to explore the role of international entrepreneurship(IE) in explaining internationalization process of Korean ventures and to structure the model of IE with the logics of effectuation. The internationalization of entrepreneurial company is regarded as the realization of entrepreneurship which find out and use opportunities across borders in this point of view, and the realization process gets more realistic and applicable to the internationalization of ventures by effectuation. So we constructed the new concepts of the generating-internationalization-outcome capability(GIOC), which is the effectual capability allowing ventures to go international despite their lack of internal resources and experiences. Its sub-capabilities of GIOC are extemporaneous coping capability, perform-resource-in-hand capability and network-use capability. The empirical analyses of the relations among the capabilities and the performances of internationalization are performed in order to prove the rationale of the model, which provides finally significant evidences of the relationships. The key contribution of this study is that it highlights the important role of IE in internationalization of ventures and shows the possible role of effectuation in explaining the realization process of IE.

An in-depth interview was conducted with 13 entrepreneurs of biomedical ventures. Based on the previous literature, the core management competencies of the ventures, which are influenced by the incubator organization and startup experience, are classified into 'technical competency', 'organization management competency', 'network competency' and 'market pioneering competency'. Analysis of the in-depth interview has revealed 18 factors influencing the formation of the core management competencies of ventures. Qualitative factors that were not addressed by the previous empirical studies were identified in this study. These include 'confidence in technology development', 'way of performing R&D', 'organizational culture' etc. This study is characterized by its scarcity as a qualitative study that deals with the entrepreneurs' prior experience. In addition, this study categorize the core management competencies which are formed by entrepreneurs' incubator organization and startup experience as four factors. This result is expected to be useful in future research.

The previous researches on product development has mainly focused on the role of venture firms' technological capabilities or that of entrepreneurship in product development. Although there are many important discussions related to the product development of business venture, a more discussion on the relationship between product development strategy implementation and performance of product development is needed. The purpose of current study is to examine the relationship between the entrepreneurial orientation and the R&D department on product development performance. To confirm the model of Day & Wensley(1988) that product novelty mediates the relationship between product development strategy and product development performance. The research results of 703 Korean business ventures suggest that the implementation strategies for product development such as utilizing entrepreneurial orientation and R&D department are more effective for business ventures in terms of product development performance. Also product novelty was prove to be a mediator that intervene the relationships between implementation of product development strategy and product development performance. Those findings may provide implications for whom has interested in the relationship between entrepreneurship and product development performance of business ventures. The differences in between new and existing product performance from the implementation strategy of product development may provide implications for practitioners who understand the process of product development.

  • Researches recently made in advanced countries into entrepreneurship found that various resources and information are mainly provided to ventures through social capital, which is a resource capital based on a network, and through corporate entrepreneurship. This research is an exploratory study on the effects of social capital and corporate entrepreneurship of new ventures upon their corporate performance, conducted from the standpoint of dynamic capability. For that purpose, a questionnaire investigation was made of 171 venture entrepreneurs in Korea, and the following are the results of an empirical analysis of responses to the questionnaire. First, it was found that social capital, which is a resource capital based on a network, had a significant effect on corporate entrepreneurship. Second, social capital also had a significant effect on ventures corporate performance. Third, corporate entrepreneurship had a significant effect on corporate performance. These results imply that social capital and corporate entrepreneurship have a significant effect on the corporate performance of ventures, which have innate disadvantages concerning the supply of resources. On the other hand, ventures, which encounter relatively more intense demands for change and renovation, can be managed in a sustainable manner just when they adequately accumulate their social capital and utilize their external resources and appropriately conduct their corporate entrepreneurship activities.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest an efficient way for ventures to achieve innovation performance through R&D cooperative arrangements. Achieving innovation is one of the critical factors for the survival of ventures. Unlike established firms, ventures often do not have the specialized assets necessary to take technological developments to the product and market stages. Young and resource-constrained firms can achieve innovation by finding and accessing to the complementary resources from R&D cooperation. In the current business environment, many firms are likely to engage in multiple simultaneous R&D cooperations with different partners. Recent research stream addresses the importance of efficient cooperation management from the holistic portfolio perspective. Since maintaining the multiple cooperative relations require substantial amount of time and effort, managing cooperative relationships play a more important role to resource-constrained firms. In order to find an efficient composition of R&D cooperative partners, we mainly focus on the diversity of partner type and dependence level in partnership. We analyze the data on Korean manufacturing ventures collected in the Korean Innovation Survey (KIS) which was conducted by the Science and Technology Policy Institute (STEPI). The KIS questionnaire assesses the existence of cooperative relationships with different types of partners respectively. The types of cooperating partners are affiliated companies, suppliers, clients & customers, competitors or other firms in the same industry, consulting firms, universities, and research institutes. We confirm that ventures obtain relatively higher benefits from R&D cooperation compared with established firms in terms of innovation performance. The results show that a moderate level of diversity in cooperative partner type composition increases innovation. Moreover, diversity of cooperation dependency among the partners enhances innovation performance. Likewise, concentrating on the quality aspects of cooperative composition, such as diversity of partners and degree of dependencies, this study offers some implications for ventures in managing partners from an integrative perspective.

  • As industrial structural changes in the 4th Industrial Revolution have recently led to the need for fostering high-tech industries and high-tech manufacturing industries have been showing high value-added creation, the importance of high-tech manufacturing ventures has increased a lot as well. As a result of this, the government is actively supporting and fostering them. However, it appears that high-tech manufacturing ventures seem to have a lot of difficulty in securing competitive advantages due to the lack of internal core competencies and experience in the rapidly changing international economic conditions. In order for high-tech manufacturing ventures to strengthen internal core competencies, external collaborations with other companies or institutions which have diverse experience, technology skills and abundant resources are actively promoted. Accordingly, based on resource-based theory and transaction cost theory, the authors analyzed the effects of the high-tech manufacturing ventures'external collaborations on internal core competencies and management performance in this study. In order to verify the hypothesis of this study, the 2020 data on"The Research on the Precision Status of Ventures'compiled by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups since 1999 were utilized. According to the results of this study, the experience of external collaborations had a positive impact on the internal core competencies and non-financial management performance, while there was no direct impact on financial management performance. Moreover, the relationship between the experience of external collaborations and management performance is mediated by the internal core competencies. Additionally, it was found that the internal core competencies positively affected both non-financial and financial management performances, and non-financial management performance again had a significant impact on the financial management performance. Finally, the experience of external collaborations had a positive impact on both development, manufacturing, and marketing factors forming the internal core competencies. However, the impacts of individual factors were different in the management performance. Development and marketing factors were shown to have a significant impact on both non-financial and financial management performance, while the manufacturing factor had a significant impact only on financial management performance.
