The study of model for velocity and turbulence within the urban canopy was carried out. To evaluate existing urban model we conducted wind tunnel experiment and large-eddy simulation (LES). Mean velocity profile and turbulence are measured within simple three different obstacle arrays. To obtain supplemental data and to verify morphological model large-eddy simulation was performed. Several methods have been used to achieve embodying the flow field in urban area. Recently, morphological method obtaining flow parameters from the statistical or physical representation of obstacle elements is a arising method. It was found that all morphological model, evaluated in this study, over predict the friction velocity, most sensitive one among the flow parameters. Velocity and turbulence in the urban canopy layer were improved by the correction using 'true' friction velocity.
Three-dimensional pipe flows with elbows, tees and headers in three different pipe systems are calculated to estimate the effect of asymmetry of axial velocity profile and swirl on measuring accuracy of an orifice flowmeter. It is evaluated how the pressure difference across the orifice is dependent on the upstream straight pipe length and how swirl intensity, swirl angle, and axial velocity distribution affect the measuring error of the orifice flowmeter. From the results, it is found that variation of the pressure difference across the orifice is negligible in case that maximum swirl angle is less than 2$^{\circ}$, and also that the pressure difference across the orifice is more sensitive to the asymmetry of axial velocity profile rather than the swirl intensity.
In this study we propose an approach based on statistical method which use the whole of saccades instead of using a few points of saccades in the quantitative analyse saccades. We computed statistical parameters such as mean velocity, quadratic mean velocity, standard duration, skewness of saccades velocity, flattness factor of saccades velocity, and mean delay by considering eye velocity as a probability density function. The results abtained are the following as ; This parameters showed the same trend like that of the main sequence. They were not biased by the systematic errors due to the arbitrary threshold. They were also less sensitive to noise, which was tested through the model simulation. So they are expected to provide a more comprehensive quantitative description of the dynamic properties of saccade in the diagnostic field.
The effects of velocity boundary conditions on the structure of methane-air nonpremixed counterflow flames were investigated by two-dimensional numerical simulation. Two low global strain rates, 12 s$\^$-1/ and 20 s$\^$-1/, were considered for comparison with measurements. Buoyancy was conformed to have strong effects on the flame structure at a low global strain rate. It was shown that the location where a top hat velocity profile was imposed is sensitive to the flame structure, and that the computed temperature along the centerline agrees well with the measurements when plug flow was imposed at the inner surface of the screen nearest the duct exit.
Effects of porous fences on the wind erosion of sand particles from a triangular pile were investigated experimentally. The porous fence and sand pile were installed in a simulated atmospheric boundary layer. The mean velocity and turbulent intensity profiles measured at the sand pile location were well fitted to the atmospheric boundary layer over the open terrain. Particle motion was visualized to see the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. In addition, the threshold velocity were measured using a light sensitive video camera with varying the fence porosity ${\varepsilon}$. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity ${\varepsilon}=30%$ was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles.
Effects of oxidizer inlet velocity on NO emission characteristics of 0.2MW oxy-fuel combustor have been experimentally investigated. The NO formation process in the oxy-fuel combustion is extremely sensitive even for the small fraction of nitrogen in oxidizer. By increasing the oxidizer velocity, flame length is reduced due to the enhanced turbulent mixing. The increased oxidizer velocity also results in the decreased flame temperature through the elevated entrainment rate of the recirculated product and the corresponding NO emission is drastically decreased. Experimental results clearly indicate that the entrained product gases play a crucial role to decrease the temperature at the flame zone and the post flame zone where the thermal NO is mainly formed.
A new technique utilizing LII signal for the measurement of flow velocities of laminar diffusion flames has been investigated. Soot particles in ethylene diffusion flames are heated by a modulated Ar-ion laser beam. LII signals and their phase angles are measured using a lock-in amplifier at the different flame heights and the axial flow velocity are obtained from the measured phase angle delay. The measured velocities are similar to those from LDV measurements under the same operating conditions. The effects of laser power, LII signal wavelength, and modulation frequency are not sensitive to the velocity measurement. However, the choice of an optical chopper blade type could affect the measurement result. The use of a 6/5 chopper blade showed the better result that is possibly due to the square shape of modulated laser beam. This study successfully demonstrated that axial flow velocities of laminar diffusion flames can be measured by a new technique utilizing LII signal, which does not need particle seeding unlikely to LDV or PIV techniques.

Magnetically suspended sensitive gyroscopes (MSSGs) provide an interesting alternative for achieving precious attitude angular measurement. To effectively reduce the measurement error caused by the non-uniformity of the air-gap flux density in a MSSG, this paper proposes a novel compensation method based on measuring and modeling of the air-gap flux density. The angular velocity measurement principle and the structure of the MSSG are described, and then the characteristic of the air-gap flux density has been analyzed in detail. Next, to compensate the flux density distribution error and improve the measurement accuracy of the MSSG, a real-time compensation method based on the online measurement with hall probes is designed. The common issues caused by the non-uniformity of the air-gap flux density can be effectively resolved by the proposed method in high-precision magnetically suspended configurations. Comparative simulation results before and after compensation have verified the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed compensation method.

Flow visualization was carried out to investigate the motion of windblown sand particles qualitatively. As a result, various types of particle motion were observed according to the fence porosity. The porous wind fence having porosity $\varepsilon$=30% was revealed to have the maximum threshold velocity, indicating good shelter effect for abating windblown dust particles. With increasing the sand particle diamter, the threshold velocity was also increased. When the height of sand pile is lower than the fence height, threshold velocity is enhanced.
PURPOSE: The progression of the center of pressure (COP) velocity of the stance phase may have important roles for predicting gait speed in older adults with cognitive decline. This study was conducted to identify the correlation between gait speed and the velocity of COP progression during the stance phase in older adults with cognitive decline. METHODS: Forty adults aged 65 years or older (twenty participants without cognitive decline, 20 participants with cognitive decline) were recruited. The COP progression velocity was measured using an F-scan pressure-sensitive insole system. The stance phase was divided into four sub-stages. (loading response, mid-stance, terminal stance, and pre-swing). Gait speed, double support phase, and cadence were also measured. Correlations and multiple regression analyses were performed. RESULTS: Gait speed was associated with the COP progression velocity in midstance (r = .719, p < .05), cadence (r = .719, p < .05) and the COP progression velocity in loading response velocity (r = .515, p < .05) in older adults with cognitive decline. However, no correlation was found in older adults without cognitive decline. In multiple regression analysis using gait speed as a dependent variable, the COP progression velocity in midstance and cadence were significant predictors of gait speed, with the COP progression velocity being the most significant predictor. CONCLUSION: The COP progression velocity is an important factor for predicting gait speed in older adults with cognitive decline, suggesting that the cognitive function influences gait speed and the velocity of COP progression.
