  • This study was carried out to analyze the installation effect of an anti-wind net on reducing wind velocity which was used to protect orchards as well as single-span plastichouses. The pressure drop through three types of anti-wind net was measured in a subsonic wind tunnel. The wind reduction through the anti-wind facility for several sets in respect to three types of the net and heights of the facility ranging from 3 to 11 m was analyzed by using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The measured data showed that the pressure drop increased as an equation of the second degree of the inlet wind velocity. Numerical computations exhibited that the effect of wind reduction definitely augmented as the net size became smaller and increased with the height of the facility being heightened to some extent. For the typical and widely used anti-wind facility with a height of 5 m and a net size of 4mm, the amount of wind reduction came up to 5.1 m/s for the inlet wind velocity of 20 m/s, and also 7.6 and 10.1 m/s for the inlet wind velocities of 30 and 40 m/s, respectively. In case for the orchard's longitudinal length to be within about 200 m, the appropriately effective height of the facility was predicted to be 5 m. Finally, the negative total pressure on the top face of the single-span plastichouse certainly reduced for all the cases with the anti-wind facility being installed. In particular, the reduction of the negative total pressure was more considerable as the inlet wind velocity increased.

  • An improvement to the spectral representation algorithm for the simulation of wind velocity fields on large scale structures is proposed in this paper. The method proposed by Deodatis (1996) serves as the basis of the improved algorithm. Firstly, an interpolation approximation is introduced to simplify the computation of the lower triangular matrix with the Cholesky decomposition of the cross-spectral density (CSD) matrix, since each element of the triangular matrix varies continuously with the wind spectra frequency. Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) technique is used to further enhance the efficiency of computation. Secondly, as an alternative spectral representation, the vectors of the triangular matrix in the Deodatis formula are replaced using an appropriate number of eigenvectors with the spectral decomposition of the CSD matrix. Lastly, a turbulent wind velocity field through a vertical plane on a long-span bridge (span-wise) is simulated to illustrate the proposed schemes. It is noted that the proposed schemes require less computer memory and are more efficiently simulated than that obtained using the existing traditional method. Furthermore, the reliability of the interpolation approximation in the simulation of wind velocity field is confirmed.

  • This paper introduced the new calibration algorithm of a straight-type five-hole pressure probe necessary for calculating three-dimensional flow velocity components. The new velocity data reduction method using both a commercial two-dimensional curve-fitting program and the zone partition method of a calibration map was firstly introduced in this study. This new calibration method can be applied up to the wide flow angle of ${\pm}80^{\circ}$ despite of using a five-hole pressure probe because this data reduction method showed a comparatively good performance in calculating yaw and pitch angles from the calibration map.

  • This paper presents a new concept to reduce turbulent frictional drag by injecting micro-bubble into near the buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer on flat plate. The concentrations of micro bubble distribution in the boundary was calculater by eddy viscosity equations in the governing equations. When near region of the buffer layer of turbulent boundary layer is filled with micro-bulle of air and viscous of the region is kept low, the velocity profile in the near region should be changed substantially. Then the Reynolds stress in the region becomes less, which guide to lower velocity gradient there. It results in reduction of velocity gradient at the viscous sublayer, which gives the reduction of shear stress at the wall.

  • We determine the rotation velocities of 108 spiral and irregular galaxies (XV-Sample) from first-order rotation curves from position-velocity maps, based on short 21-cm observations with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT). To test the usual random motion corrections, we compare the global HI linewidths and the rotation velocities, obtained from kinematical fits to two-dimensional velocity fields for a sample of 28 galaxies (RC-Sample), and find that the most frequently used correction formulae (Tully & Fouque 1985) are not very satisfactory. The rotation velocity parameter (the random-motion corrected HI linewidth: W?), derived with these corrections, may be statistically equal to two times the true rotation velocity, but in individual cases the differences can be large. We analyse, for both RC- and XV-Samples, the dependence of the slope of, and scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation on the definition of the rotation velocity parameters- For the RC-Sample, we find that the scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation can be reduced considerably when the rotation velocities derived from rotation curves are used instead of the random-motion corrected global H I linewidths. No such reduction in the scatter is seen for XV-Sample. We conclude that the reduction of the scatter in the Tully-Fisher relation seems to be related to the use of two-dimensional velocity information: accurate rotation velocity and kinematical inclination.

  • Concrete technologists have used ultrasonic pulse velocity test for decades to evaluate the properties of concrete. However, the presented research work focuses on the use of ultrasonic pulse velocity test to study the degradation in steel-concrete bond subjected to increasing loading. A detailed experimental investigation was conducted by testing five identical beam specimens under increasing loading. The loading was increased from zero till failure in equal increments. From the experimentation, it was found that as the reinforced concrete beams were stressed from control unloaded condition till complete failure, the propagating ultrasonic wave velocity reduced. This reduction in wave velocity is attributed to the initiation, development, and propagation of internal cracking in the concrete surrounding the steel reinforcement. Using both direct and semidirect methods of testing, results of reduction in wave velocity with evidence of internal cracking at steel-concrete interface are presented. From the presented results and discussion, it can be concluded that the UPV test method can be successfully employed to identify zones of poor bonding along the length of reinforced concrete beam. The information gathered by such testing can be used by engineers for localizing repairs thereby leading to saving of time, labor and cost of repairs. Furthermore, the implementation strategy along with real-world challenges associated with the application of the proposed technique and area of future development have also been presented.

  • In this paper, we present two successful results from active controls of flows over a circular cylinder and a sphere for drag reduction. The Reynolds number range considered for the flow over a circular cylinder is 40-3900 based on the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter, whereas for the flow over a sphere it is $10^{5}$ based on the free-stream velocity and sphere diameter. The successful active control methods are a distributed (spatially periodic) forcing and a high-frequency (time periodic) forcing. With these control methods, the mean drag and lift fluctuations decrease and vortical structures are significantly modified. For example, the time-periodic forcing at a high frequency (larger than 20 times the vortex shedding frequency) produces $50{\%}$ drag reduction for the flow over a sphere at $Re=10^{5}$. The distributed forcing applied to the flow over a circular cylinder results in a significant drag reduction at all the Reynolds numbers investigated.

  • The wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are employed for the purpose of studying the aerodynamic appendices and mechanism on suppression for the vortex-induced vibration (VIV). This paper takes the HongKong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge as an example to conduct the wind tunnel test of large-scale sectional model. The results of wind tunnel test show that it is the crash barrier that induces the vertical VIV. CFD numerical simulation results show that the distance between the curb and crash barrier is not long enough to accelerate the flow velocity between them, resulting in an approximate stagnation region forming behind those two, where the continuous vortex-shedding occurs, giving rise to the vertical VIV in the end. According to the above, 3 types of wind fairing (trapezoidal, airfoil and smaller airfoil) are proposed to accelerate the flow velocity between the crash barrier and curb in order to avoid the continuous vortex-shedding. Both of the CFD numerical simulation and the velocity field measurement show that the flow velocity of all the measuring points in case of the section with airfoil wind fairing, can be increased greatly compared to the results of original section, and the energy is reduced considerably at the natural frequency, indicating that the wind fairing do accelerate the flow velocity behind the crash barrier. Wind tunnel tests in case of the sections with three different countermeasures mentioned above are conducted and the results compared with the original section show that all the three different countermeasures can be used to control VIV to varying degrees.

  • A state-space method is proposed to analyze the aerodynamically coupled flutter problems of long-span bridges based on the modal coordinates of structure. The theory about complex modes is applied in this paper. The general governing equation of the system is converted into a complex standard characteristic equation in a state space format, which contains only two variables. The proposed method is a single-parameter searching method about reduced velocity, and it need not choose the participating modes beforehand and has no requirement for the form of structure damping matrix. The information about variations of system characteristics with reduced velocity and wind velocity can be provided. The method is able to find automatically the lowest critical flutter velocity and give relative amplitudes, phases and energy ratios of the participating modes in the flutter motion. Moreover, the flutter analysis of Jiangyin Yangtse suspension bridge with 1385 m main span is performed. The proposed method has proved reliable in its methodology and efficient in its use.

  • Batch type reduction-oxidation tests were performed to check effects of temperature, pressure, gas velocity, and capacity on reduction characteristics of mass produced particle in a 0.5 MWth chemical looping combustion system. The fuel conversion and the CO2 selectivity increased as the temperature increased and as the gas velocity decreased. However the CO2 selectivity showed the maximum and decreased as the capacity increased because the CO emission increased. The results show that high temperature, low gas velocity and low inert gas concentration are preferable to ensure high reactivity of oxygen carrier in the fuel reactor.
