IDENTIFICATION CODE OF INTERSTELLAR CLOUDS WITHIN IRAF

  • We present a code which identifies individual clouds in crowded region using IMFORT interface within Image Reduction and Analysis Facility (IRAF). We define a cloud as an object composed of all pixels in longitude, latitude, and velocity that are simply connected and that lie above some threshold temperature. The code searches the whole pixels of the data cube in efficient way to isolate individual clouds. Along with identification of clouds it is designed to estimate their mean values of longitudes, latitudes, and velocities. In addition, a function of generating individual images (or cube data) of identified clouds is added up. We also present identified individual clouds using a $^{12}CO$ survey data cube of Galactic Anticenter Region (Lee et al. 1997) as a test example. We used a threshold temperature of $5\sigma$ rms noise level of the data With a higher threshold temperature, we isolated subclouds of a huge cloud identified originally. As the most important parameter to identify clouds is the threshold value, its effect to the size and velocity dispersion is discussed rigorously.

PIV measurement of step cavity with driven flow (구동류를 갖는 계단 캐비티의 PIV계측)

  • An experimental study was carried out in a three-dimensional cubic cavity driven by 2-dimensional plane Poiseuille flow for three kinds of Reynolds number, $10^4$, 3 $\times$ $10^4$ and 5 $\times$ $10^4$ based on the cavity width and cavity inlet mean flow velcoity. Instant simultaneous velocity vectors at whole field were measured by 2-D PIV system. Laser based illumination and two-frame grey-level cross correlation algorithm are adopted. Severe unsteady flow fluctuation within the cavity are remarkable at above Re = 3 $\times$ $10^4$ Reynolds numbers and sheared mixing layer phenomena are also found at the region where inlet driving Poiseuille flow is collided with the clock-wise rotating main primary vortex at upper center area. Instant velocity profiles reveal that deformed forced vortex formation is observed throughout the separate two areas.

  • Numerical study on human thermal comfort in a low floor bus has been conducted. Human thermal comfort in a bus depends mainly on air temperature, air velocity, mean radiant temperature, humidity, and direct solar flux, as well as the level of activity and thermal properties of clothing. The paper presents the velocity and temperature distribution, Predicted Mean Vote (PMV) and Predicted Percentage of Dissatisfied (PPD) indices for the driver and passengers.

  • Squeak noise is studied by using the pin-on-disk system with aluminum pin and steel disk. Noise induced by friction is measured with respect to the normal loads and sliding speeds. The negative slope of friction-velocity curve is seen when the squeak noise occurs. It is found that the normal load influences on the sound level of squeak noise. From the hammering test, the major frequency of the squeak noise is shown to correspond to one of system modes, which implies that squeak phenomenon arises from the unstable system modes. The result of FE analysis shows that the major squeak mode is the bending mode of the pin.

  • Both numerical analysis and experiment of cold and hot tests were performed to obtain basic design data for the swirl coaxial type Injector and to predict the combustion performance. Mass distribution, mixing distribution, mixing efficiency, characteristic velocity efficiency were measured by the cold tests and numerical analysis using the commercial thermo-hydraulic program. Test and analysis variables were recess, pressure drop, velocity ratio, mixing spray, mixture ratio. Hot tests were performed for the Uni-element injector to compare the performance with the cold test results, and, hot tests for Multi-element injector were performed to compare the performance with Uni-element injector. Designed thrust of the Uni-element injector liquid rocket was 35kgf at sea level and combustion chamber pressure, 20bar. Kerosene and Lox were used as a propellant.

  • To evaluate the structural integrity of the NPP containment building more rigorously, the effective prestress, which is one of the most affecting elements, needs to be estimated exactly. This paper presents the results of an experimental study to determine the effective prestress force in prestressed concrete beams. It is possible to improve the effective prestress measuring method by test beam, which is being applied for the investigation of the nuclear power plant in operation. If experimentally evaluated Lift-Off method in this study can be coupled with test beam test currently being used in in-service nuclear power plant, it is possible to measure prestress loss of the tendon and the level of the effective prestress load.

  • This paper presents the static analysis, the modal analysis and the forced vibration analysis on engine structures to find out the structure-borne noise sources by finite element method. The deformation of engine structures under the maximum combu- stion gas force was calculated through the static analysis, and the resonance possibilities were predicted by the modal analysis which ascertains mode shapes and the corresponding frequencies of engine global and its major noise sources in engine surfaces were investigated with the forced vibration analysis by means of finding the transfer mobilities on engine surfaces due to the piston impact and the velocity levels due to the combustion in consideration of oil film stiffness and damping coefficients. Finally, the direction of engine structure-borne noise reduction can be estabilished by the above-mentioned analysis procedure and the reduction effect of cost on proto-type engine build-up is expected.

  • The moving load such as a shock wave in a pipe propagates with a specific velocity. This internal load speed determines the level of flexural wave excitation and the possibility of resonant response leading to a large deformation. In this paper, we present particular solutions of displacements and the resonance conditions when the moving load is propagating in a pipe. These analytical results are compared to numerical simulations obtained using a hydrocode. We expect to identify potential explosion hazards in the general power industries.

  • Comprehensive study on a centrifugal blower for air-purifier involving a few physical filters for percolation process has been accomplished for an optimal design of the air handling system. The filtering media causes a flow resistance for induced flows by a rotating impeller. The present methodology is to adopt PIV system for velocity measurements and wind tunnel connected with an anechoic chamber for total performance test of the blower. Trial prototypes for the blades of a rotor and casing are presented for satisfaction of both flow rate and noise level set by design objectives. Tapered blades with a special casing for a fan show good performance data. The results of velocity fields also explain the reason of improvements of the blower performance.

  • This paper deals with a design of nonlinear glide slope capture logic using dynamic model inversion in singular perturbation, which is applicable to the autolanding in ILS. Aircraft dynamics are separated into the fast time-scale variables, related with the inner-loop design, and the slow time-scale variables, related with the outer-loop design. It is assumed that the aircraft starts landing at 1000ft of altitude, -2.5deg of flight path angle, and 250ft/sec of velocity. In the outer-loop design, commands of altitude and velocity are selected and thereby the pseudo-controls of power level and pitch rate are determined. Also the elevator input to the aircraft is determined in the inner-loop design.
