  • Fluid properties which are most commonly used to evaluate spray atomization characteristics, are important because they affect velocity and size distribution of droplets. The purpose of this study was to incorporate the significant characteristics in atomization process of industrial etching spray and how each of them affects the design of precise pressure-swirl nozzles. The experiment was carried out with different viscosity and density of fluid. The macro characteristics of liquid spray, such as the spray angle and shape were captured by PMAS and the micro characteristics of liquid spray, such as droplet size and velocity were obtained by PDA. The mean velocity and SMD of droplets were measured along axial and radial direction. It was found that the higher viscosity and density resulted in the larger SMD and the lower mean velocity of droplets.

  • Numerical analysis of two dimensional incompressible laminar free jet flow was carried out by using finite difference SMAC scheme. Flow characteristics of free jet flow such as jet width, similarity of jet velocity and hypothetical origin were investigated for different Reynolds numbers of Re=30 and 100. The reliability of predictions were confirmed by comparison with exact solution. Non-dimensional velocity distribution showed similarity of jet flow velocity after initial region. In the region of laminar flow, the location of hypothetical origin becomes more distant with Reynolds number.

  • This study presents the measured unsteady flctuation of impeller discharge flow for a centrifugal compressor in an unstable operating region. The characteristics of the blade-to-blade flow at rotating stall onset were investigated by measuring unsteady velocity fluctuations at several different diffuser axial distances using a hot wire anemometer. The flow characteristics in terms of the radial and tangential velocity components and the flow angle distribution at the impeller exit were analyzed using phase-locked ensemble averaging techniques. As a result, increase or decrease of the radial velocity component during the rotating stall is dominated by that of the suction side. The radial velocity distributions show the opposite trends in the regions where the radial velocity during rotating stall onset increases and decreases.

  • Vibration isolators and anti-vibration mounts are ideal, for example, in creating floating floors for gymnasiums, or performance spaces. However, it is well-known that there are great difficulties on isolating vibration transmission in structural steel components, especially steel floors. Besides, the selection of inertia blocks, which are usually used by engineers as an effective vibration control measure, is usually based on crude methods or the experience of the engineers. Thus, no simple method or indices have been available for assessing the effect of inertia blocks on vibration isolation or stability of vibratory systems. Thus, the aims of this research are to provide further background description using a FE model and present and implement a modal approach, that was validated experimentally, the latter assisting in providing improved understanding of the vibration transmission phenomenon in steel buildings excited by a velocity-source type of excitation. A better visualization of the mean-square velocity distribution in the frequency domain is presented using the concept of modal expansion. Finally, the variation of the mean-square velocity with frequency, whilst varying mass and/or stiffness of the coupled system, is presented.

  • Contrary to the flow rate in fully filled pipe flows, the flow rate in partially filled pipe flows is significantly influenced by the variation of water level, channel slop, and so on. The major difference in these two flows results from the existence of a free surface. To make it clear, in the present study, a similarity of the velocity profile in a partially filled circular pipe has been investigated according to the water level. A particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique was applied to measure the three-dimensional velocity profiles. As a result, there is found a similarity of the velocity profile near the central region. However, near the side wall, the similarity is broken due to the interaction between the wall and the free surface.

  • In order to examine the effect of voids on the ultrasonic wave velocity, specimens made of Silica-Sand with voids were prepared for the measurements. The volume fraction of 0, 15, and 30% of voids were used to compare the differences. Because of its more homogeneous distribution of materials properties, the Silica-Sand specimens were used, as compared to mortar specimens. The results showed clear change in ultrasonic wave velocity with different volume fraction of voids. This result is to be used for the estimation of the integrity of concrete structures using ultrasonic wave velocity method as nondestructive testing.

  • Three different improvements of the Velocity-based model were proposed in a minimal velocity-based pedestrian model. The improvements of the models are based on the different agent forms. The different representations of the agent lead to different results, in this paper, we simulated the pedestrian movements in some typical scenes by using different agent forms, and the agent forms included the circles with different radiuses, the ellipse and the multi-circle stand for one pedestrian. We have proposed a novel model of pedestrian dynamics to optimize the simulation. Our model specifies the pedestrian behavior using a dynamic ellipse, which is parameterized by their velocity and can improve the simulaton accuracy. We found a representation of the pedestrian much closer to the reality. The phenomena of the self-organization can be observable in the improved models.

  • We propose a new method for measuring the frequency characteristics of phase velocity along a bone for bending vibration modes to diagnose its mechanical characteristics. By introducing a simple model of a distributed-constant-network, the phase velocity is determined for each frequency from the spatial distribution of velocity along a radius bone surface which is measured by the ultrasonic Doppler method.
