The purpose of this study is to identify and improve the performance of the adjacent room ventilation system in living room ventilation facilities, and compare and analyze the smoke control regulations of the NFPA code and the national fire safety standard (NFSC). The analysis method was fire dynamics simulation (FDS) and was used to analyze the, variations of the air supply amount, width of the boundary, change in indoor combustion and wind velocity of the incoming air. It was found to be advantageous to secure the clean layer when the amount of air supplied is less than the amount of discharged air in the fire room. However, in the supply room, it is more effective to secure the clean layer when the amount of supplied air is larger than the amount of discharged air, as a longer boundary width gives rise to better performance. In addition, it is necessary to consider the amount of air supplied and discharged as a function of the kind of flammable material. Moreover, decreasing the air inlet wind speed and amount of incoming air is advantageous for securing the clean layer of the fire room.

In this paper, the fuzzy neural network for the obstacle avoidance, which consists of the straight-line navigation and the barrier elusion navigation, is proposed and examined. For the straight-line navigation, the fuzzy neural network gets two inputs, angle and distance between the line and the mobile robot, and produces one output, steering velocity of the mobile robot. For the barrier elusion navigation, four ultrasonic sensors measure the distance between the barrier and the mobile robot and provide the distance information to the network. Then the network outputs the steering velocity to navigate along the obstacle boundary. Training of the proposed fuzzy neural network is executed in a given environment in real-time. The weights adjusting uses the back-propagation of the gradient of error to be minimized. Computer simulations are carried out to examine the efficiency of the real time learning and the guiding ability of the proposed fuzzy neural network. It has been shown that the mobile robot that employs the proposed fuzzy neural network navigates more safely with and less trembling locus compared with the previous reported efforts.
Robot engineering is developed mainly in the field of intelligibility such as a manipulation. Considering the popularization of robots in the future, however, a robot should be studied from a viewpoint of saving energy because a robot is a kind of machine with a energy conversion. This paper deals with minimizing an energy consumption of a manipulator which is driven in a point-to-point control method. When a manipulator carries a heavy payload toward gravitation or the links are de-accelerated for positioning, the motors at joints generate electric energy. Since this energy can be regenerated to the source by using a chopper, the energy consumption of a manipulator is only heat loss by an electric and a frictional resistance of the motors. The minimization of the sum of these losses is reduced Lo a two-points boundary-value problem of an non-linear differential equation. The solutions are obtained by the generalized Newton-Raphson method in this paper. The energy consumption due to the optimum angular velocity patterns of two joints of a two-links manipulator is compared with conventional velocity patterns such as quadratic and trapezoid.

To improve surgical result of total hip arthroplasty (THA), there has been some approaches using a robotic milling system, which can make a precise cavity in the femur. Usually, to carve a femur, the surgical robot is controlled by a pre-programmed tool-path regardless of a surgeon's experience and Judgment. This paper presents a control method of a surgical robot for THA, which can be used as an advanced surgical tool. With a master/slave combined surgical robot, surgeon can directly control the motion and velocity of a surgical robot. The master/slave-combined robot is controlled to display a specific admittance for a surgeon's force to the surgical robot velocity. To prevent the over-carving of a femur, virtual hard wall is displayed on the surgical boundary. To evaluate the proposed control method of the master/slave-combined surgical robot, 2-DOF master/slave-combined manipulator is used in experiment.

This paper describes dynamic manipulability analysis of robotic arms moving in viscous fluid. The manipulability is a functionality of manipulator system in a given configuration under the limits of joint ability with respect to the task required to be performed. To investigate the manipulability of underwater robotic arms, a modeling and analysis method is presented. The dynamic equation of motion of underwater manipulator is derived based on the Lagrange-Euler equation considering with the hydrodynamic forces caused by added mass, buoyancy and hydraulic drag. The hydrodynamic drag term in the equation is established as analytical form using Denavit-Hartenberg (D-H) link coordination of manipulator. Two analytical approaches based oil manipulability ellipsoid are presented to visualize the manipulability of robotic arm moving in viscous fluid. The one is scaled ellipsoid which transforms the boundary of joint torque to acceleration boundary of end-effector by normalizing the torques in joint space, while the other is shifted ellipsoid which depicts total acceleration boundary of end-effector by shifting the ellipsoid as much as gravity and velocity dependent forces in work space. An analysis example of 2-link manipulator with proposed analysis scheme is presented to validate the method.
A singular pertubation theory is applied to obtain an approximate solution for suboptimal control of nuclear reactors with spatially distributed parameters. The inverse of the neutron velocity is regarded as a small perturbing parameter, and the model, adopted for simplicity, is a cylindrically symmetrical reactor whose dynamics are described by the one group diffusion equation with one delayed neutron group. The Helmholtz mode expansion is used for the application of the optimal theory for lumped parameter systems to the spatially distributed parameter systems. An asymptotic expansion of the feedback gain matrix is obtained with construction of the boundary layer correction up to the first order.
Analytical solutions and finite element results of laminated composite plates with smart material layers embedded in them are presented in this study. The third-order plate theory of Reddy is used to study vibration suppression characteristics. The analytical solution for simply supported boundary conditions is based on the Navier solution procedure. The velocity feedback control is used. Parametric effects of the position of the smart material layers, material properties, and control parameters on the suppression time are investigated. It has been found that (a) the minimum vibration suppression time is achieved by placing the smart material layers farthest from the neutral axis, (b) using thinner smart material layers have better vibration attenuation characteristics, and, (c) the vibration suppression time is larger for a lower value of the feedback control coefficient.

In this work we consider the mathematical formulation and numerical resolution of the linear feedback control problem for Boussinesq equations. The controlled Boussinesq equations is given by $$\frac{{\partial}u}{{\partial}t}-{\nu}{\Delta}u+(u{\cdot}{\nabla}u+{\nabla}p={\beta}{\theta}g+f+F\;\;in\;(0,\;T){\times}\;{\Omega}$$, $${\nabla}{\cdot}u=0\;\;in\;(0,\;T){\times}{\Omega}$$, $$u|_{{\partial}{\Omega}=0,\;u(0,x)=\;u_0(x)$$$$\frac{{\partial}{\theta}}{{\partial}t}-k{\Delta}{\theta}+(u{\cdot}){\theta}={\tau}+T,\;\;in(0,\;T){\times}{\Omega}$$$${\theta}|_{{\partial}{\Omega}=0,\;\;{\theta}(0,X)={\theta}_0(X)$$, where $\Omega$ is a bounded open set in $R^{n}$, n=2 or 3 with a $C^{\infty}$ boundary ${\partial}{\Omega}$. The control is achieved by means of a linear feedback law relating the body forces to the velocity and temperature field, i.e., $$f=-{\gamma}_1(u-U),\;\;{\tau}=-{\gamma}_2({\theta}-{\Theta}}$$ where (U,$\Theta$) are target velocity and temperature. We show that the unsteady solutions to Boussinesq equations are stabilizable by internal controllers with exponential decaying property. In order to compute (approximations to) solution, semi discrete-in-time and full space-time discrete approximations are also studied. We prove that the difference between the solution of the discrete problem and the target solution decay to zero exponentially for sufficiently small time step.

The effect of nonlinear friction in the low velocity is dominant in precise controlled mechanisms and it is difficult to model. This paper is concerned with the compensation for friction using the variable structure system approach as nonmodel based method. The problem of chattering in the sliding mode controller is suppressed by the implementation of the boundary layer concept. And the estimation for friction using sliding mode observer makes the upper bound of matched uncertainty reduced. Accordingly, the effect of chattering can be more suppressed. And the sliding surface is constructed by adding an integral component to the switching function that is made by using error dynamics. This sliding surface guarantees the good tracking performance. Experimental results for a XY table system show that the proposed method has a good performance especially in the low velocity.
This paper deals with dynamic behaviour analysis for pipeline inspection gauge (PIG) flow control in natural gas pipeline. The dynamic behaviour of the PIG is depending on the different Pressure between the rear and nose parts, which is generated by injected gas flow behind PIG's tail and expelled gas flow in front of its nose. To analyze the dynamic behaviour characteristics such as gas flow in pipeline, and the PIG's position and velocity, mathematical model is derived as two types of a nonlinear hyperbolic partial differential equation for unsteady flow analysis of the PIG driving and expelled gas, and nonhomogeneous differential equation for dynamic analysis of PIG. The nonlinear equation is solved by method of characteristics (MOC) with the regular rectangular grid under appropriate initial and boundary conditions. The Runge-Kuta method is used when we solve the steady flow equations to get initial flow values and the dynamic equation of PIG. The gas upstream and downstream of PIG are divided into a number of elements of equal length. The sampling time and distance are chosen under Courant-Friedrich-Lewy (CFL) restriction. The simulation is performed with a pipeline segment in the Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) low pressure system, Ueijungboo-Sangye line. The simulation results show us that the derived mathematical model and the proposed computational scheme are effective for estimating the position and velocity of PIG with different operational conditions of pipeline.
