  • Global competition of automotive market and affordable prices of electronic components become the major reason that automotive industries rapidly employ a large number of electric and electronic systems to improve vehicle performance and to meet various regulations such as emission, fuel efficiency, and safety. Especially, the provision of a motor-driven steering column (MDSC) for luxury vehicle is getting popular for drivers' convenience. In this study, an MDSC is developed, which provides several intelligent features such as the manual operation for tilting and telescoping the steering wheel, and the save/recall operation for three different steering wheel positions. In addition, the fault detection algorithm is developed.

  • It is very difficult to analyze the dynamic characteristic because tilting vehicle is a very complex system which are connected various mass element with tilting system. To realize and analyze actual phenomenon has restriction that usual commercial software calculates creep force under creep theory about wheel -rail contact mechanism as basic analyzing, and approach about contact point are based on two dimensional non-linear contact theory and simplified Hertzian contact which considers just displacement change on the YZ plain. Therefore, to solve these problems there should be a new approach difference with existing one. In this research, a new algorithm for finding wheel-rail contact position, calculation method of contact force and applied force will be presented.

  • The railroad is a means of large transportation which has many talents such as a safety and a regularity. That is a results from various confidential performance tests and evaluations of the system. The railroad system consist of various subsystems - vehicle, power supply, signal, communications, track structures, operations, etc. Among them, as an item of safety evaluation there is a measurement of wheel/rail force, so called a measurement of derailment coefficient. This is a very important item because a derailment of a train will bring about a big accident. Especially it is more important in high speed rail of which operation speed is over two times as fast as existing rail. In this paper, it is introduced to preprocess the wheelset for measuring wheel/rail force of high speed rail, such as to treat a measuring wheelset, adhesion of strain gauges and static load test, running test result of main line.

  • A method of establishing the tooth modification for gear transmission of vehicles to reduce gear whine noise, caused by tooth impact phenomenon of mating gear, is introduced. The major causes of tooth impact are due to the deflections of gear teeth and shafts of transmission with the loaded condition including various kinds of manufacturing errors. The theoretical shape of tooth surface to avoid tooth impact is derived by the amount of elastic deformation of gear teeth and shaft and overall manufacturing error of machine tool. The surface function is converted with respect to the conventional commercial data usually communicated to the gear inspection system. The proposed method is applied to the gearbox of four wheel drive vehicle and shows the gear whine noise decreased to the 8 dB in the sound level.

  • e-4WD(Electric-4WD) system is a 4WD(4-Wheel Drive) System that can transform a car into a Hybrid System. e-4WD consists of a Motor, Inverter, Speed reducer and Clutch. The Motor, Speed reducer and Clutch are installed on the rear sub-frame as a chassis module type. The inverter is installed separately. Compared to a mechanical 4WD, the e-4WD system has many advantages. For example, the reduced number of drivetrain components makes better use of the space. Driving with a motor only at low speed improves fuel economy and reduces exhaust gas. Engine downsizing is available because the motor assists the engine. The performance of a conventional HEV(Hybrid Electric Vehicle) system can also be maintained. This paper proposes the specifications of components and the control logic for an e-4WD System. And the effect of the e-4WD system is proven using a test vehicle equipped with components under various test conditions.

  • Since the bi-modal tram is too long so that the traditional steering system controlled only the first axle increases its turning radius, it is not suitable to the domestic road environment. In addition, it become hard to make fine parking with the traditional steering system. To resolve the problem, the bi-modal tram requires an all wheel steering system (AWS) that the second axle is controlled by the first axle's degree and the velocity of vehicle, and the third axle is steered by the articulation angle's degree and the velocity of degree. This paper addresses the factors for the AWS ECU design, the strategies to solve the problems, the core technologies for the implementation, and also the outcomes and analysis of the performance evaluation of implemented system.

  • This paper proposes the track layout criterion for the LRT(light rail transit). All criterions established concerning dimension and performance of LRT vehicles with rubber wheel. Using theoretical approach, adaptation and validity of criterions are verified. Especially, it were modified according to change of vehicle performance that criterions proposed previous version Proposed criterions may provide a standard scheme for design and construction of the track layout on LRT.

  • During the test drive of developing vehicle, a low frequency vibration of sprung mass on front outer wheel has been frequently observed in cornering with some speed. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the low frequency vibration of the sprung mass. The analysis result shows that the low frequency vibration is caused by sudden migration of the center of gravity of vihicle and it is determined by geometric points of suspension.

  • An analysis of handling performance including the compliance effects is performed. Using the primitive design data of suspension systems, a kinematic model and the three kinds of compliance models are developed. The wheel alignments curves are obtained with the multibody dynamic analysis program ADAMS. The compliance effects of each model are discussed. Since the proposed analysis only requires the raw design data, the better prediction of wheel behaviors is possible in suspension design stage.

  • A wheel/rail contact module for dynamics analysis of railway vehicles is developed. The developed module is based on non-linear contact and FASTSIM algorithm which calculates contact forces. And the module is incorporated into the general purpose program DADS using user-defined subroutines. The simulation results of this developed program is compared to those of the railway vehicle dynamics analysis program AGEM. Since the module is based on DADS, various simulation environments can be considered.
