Possibility as role of ginseng and ginsenosides on inhibiting the heart disease of COVID-19: A systematic review

  • Coronavirus has been spreading rapidly around the world since it broke out in China in 2019. Respiratory diseases caused by coronavirus infection cause various diseases ranging from asymptomatic subclinical infections to severe pneumonia and cardiovascular complications, leading to death. In this regard, natural products are being studied to prevent various diseases caused by COVID-19. In current review, we would like to present mechanisms related to the inhibition of heart disease in ginseng and ginsenoside against SARS-CoV-2. In many previous studies, ginseng and ginsenoside are known to have antioxidant, blood flow improvement, improvement of vascular and heart function, blood pressure control, suppression of myocardial infarction and heart failure, and antiarrhythmia. Therefore, ginseng and ginsenoside have a possibility to suppress cardiovascular complications caused by COVID-19. Many of research provide evidence for ginseng and ginsenoside as treatments for the risk of cardiovascular complications. However, in this review, more specific contents on the proposition of the efficacy of ginseng and ginsenoside for COVID-19 should be presented. Therefore, we hope that researches to reduce cardiovascular complications of ginseng and ginsenoside for COVID-19 should be presented to reduce mortality for COVID-19.

사무산(제천시)의 식물다양성과 식생 (Vascular Plant Diversity and Vegetation of Samusan Mt. in Jecheon-si, Korean Peninsula)

  • 본 연구는 사무산의 관속식물상을 밝히고 주요 식물을 조사하였다. 2014년 6월부터 2015년 10월까지 총 9회에 걸쳐 현지조사를 실시한 결과 관속식물은 108과 306속 424종 8아종 48변종 4품종 1교잡종으로 총 502분류군이 확인되었다. 식물종다양성이 높은 과는 국화과(70분류군), 화본과(52분류군), 장미과(30분류군), 콩과(28분류군), 사초과(20분류군)이었다. 한반도 고유종은 10분류군이며, IUCN 평가기준에 따른 적색목록식물은 14분류군으로 확인되었다. 식물구계학적 특정식물은 V등급 5분류군, IV등급 11분류군, III등급 14분류군, II등급 10분류군, I등급 21분류군으로 총 61분류군이 관찰되었다. 외래식물은 43분류군으로 귀화율 8.6%, 도시화지수 13.4%로 나타났다. 삼림식생은 소나무림과 굴참나무림, 상수리나무림, 신갈나무림, 느티나무림, 아까시나무림으로 대별된다. 삼림의 수직구조는 안정적이며, DBH-Class 분석 결과는 교목층의 우점종이 한동안 유지될것으로 나타났다. 사무산은 식물종다양성이 높고 고유종, 희귀식물, 호석회성식물 등 주요 식물들이 다수 분포하며, 식물지리학적 가치가 높은 것으로 생각된다. 이러함에도, 인위적인 교란과 훼손에 대한 어떠한 보호조치도 없기 때문에 생물자원이 지속적으로 소실되고 있다. 따라서 산림식생 보전을 위한 대책이 마련될 필요가 있다.

  • 본 연구는 경상남도 합천군 오도산자연휴양림의 식물상 분석을 통해 생태적 정보제공뿐만 아니라 자연휴양림의 효율적인 보호관리를 위한 기초정보를 제공하기 위한 목적으로 2016년 9월부터 2017년 6월까지 수행되었다. 전체 식물상은 86과 192속 255종 3아종 32변종 6품종 등 총 296분류군이 확인되었고, 종/속 비율은 1.5로 나타났다. 특산식물은 세뿔투구꽃, 진범, 은꿩의다리, 흰괭이눈, 참갈퀴덩굴 등 총 10분류군이 나타났고, 희귀식물은 세뿔투구꽃, 주목, 히어리, 사철란 등 총 6분류군이 나타났다. 식물구계학적 특정식물은 총 30분류군으로 IV등급이 5분류군, III등급이 6분류군, II등급이 7분류군, I등급이 11분류군이 나타났다. 국외반출 승인대상 생물자원은 총 42분류군이 나타났고, 기후변화 적응 대상식물은 식재종인 구상나무, 세뿔투구꽃을 포함하여 총 4분류군이 나타났다. 귀화식물은 닭의덩굴, 유럽점나도나물, 가죽나무, 망초 등 총 11분류군이 나타났다.

녹차의 피부보호효과 (Skin Care Effects of Green Tea)

  • 차(Camellia sinensis)는 세계적으로 애용되는 음료이다. 그 중, 아시아권에서 주로 소비되는 녹차는 다양한 생리활성을 가지고 있어 화장품, 기능성식품을 위한 기능성 소재로서 선호되고 있다. 녹차의 피부에 대한 활성은 세포보호에서부터 피부 기질 단백질의 합성까지 다양하게 나타난다. 녹차 폴리페놀(green tea polyphenols; GTPs)은 활성을 나타내는 주성분으로서 항산화 활성 이외에 항암, 항염증, 피부면역능 저하방지활성 등을 보이며, 세포내 신호전달 경로에도 관여한다 GTPs는 표피각질형성세포에서 자외선 조사에 의한 산화 스트레스를 감소시키고, 그에 따르는 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) 신호전달과 세포사멸을 억제한다. 또한, 같은 세포에서 tumor necrosis factor alpha $(TNF{\alpha})$나 다른 화학물질에 의해 cyclooxygenase-2(COX-2), interleukin-8 (IL-8) 및 vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) 같은 염증매개물질이 유발되는 것을 막아준다. 또한, GTPs는 등물실험에서 화학물질이나 자외선에 의한 피부암의 발생도 억제하는데, 경구투여 외에 경피투여로도 효과가 있었다. 피부보호작용 이외에도 GTPs는 각질형성세포의 분화촉진, 노화된 피부세포의 증식능 회복, 피부기질단백질의 분해억제 등의 기능이 있으며, 피부세포에서의 기질단백질 생합성을 직접적으로 촉진하기도 한다. 녹차성분이 보이는 이러한 피부에 대한 활성은, 제형 측면에서의 연구가 진행되어 감에 따라 보다 효과적인 피부를 위한 소재로서의 사용 가능성을 더욱 높여주고 있다.

대전 지역 주민의 건강 향상을 위한 식습관 및 건강상태, 질병 대처 방안에 관한 기초자료와 교육 요구도 조사 (Survey on Food Habits, Health Condition and Precaution for Disease for the Health Improvement of Community People in Taejon)

  • The objectives of this study were to investigate some problems related to health and to identify citizen's needs related to nutrition education program. The data were analyzed by using $x^2$-test, t-test, ANOVA and multiple range test. The food habits score was 70.0 of 100. The score of man was 69.0, while that of woman was 72.6. Since woman's food habit was better than man, education to man is more needed. Man's BMI was 22.5 and that of woman was 21.4. W/H ratio of man was 0.85 and that of woman was 0.80. BMI and W/H ratio increased as age increases. Systolic blood pressure was 123.5mmHg and diastolic blood pressure was 83.2mmHg. All age groups need the education of blood pressure control. Since subjects who did regular exercise were only 26.3%, these community people needed more regular exercise, specially woman. It turned out that subjects were afraid of cancer, hypertension, cerebral vascular diseases which are related with food habits. The disease or symptom having the highest mobility were dental disease, gastroenteric disorder, headache and constipation. They asked for counselling about health, diet therapy, protection methods of disease and menu planning etc. The program of education for health and good food habits should be developed according to subjects's age, sex, education etc. These results showed primary needs on the curriculum of citizen's education program for enhancing health. In addition, we suggest the research on the practical curriculum of nutrition education program.

Cryptic variation, molecular data, and the challenge of conserving plant diversity in oceanic archipelagos: the critical role of plant systematics

  • Plant species on oceanic islands comprise nearly 25% of described vascular plants on only 5% of the Earth's land surface yet are among the most rare and endangered plants. Conservation of plant biodiversity on islands poses particular challenges because many species occur in a few and/or small populations, and their habitats on islands are often disturbed by the activity of humans or by natural processes such as landslides and volcanoes. In addition to described species, evidence is accumulating that there are likely significant numbers of "cryptic" species in oceanic archipelagos. Plant systematists, in collaboration with others in the botanical disciplines, are critical to the discovery of the subtle diversity in oceanic island floras. Molecular data will play an ever increasing role in revealing variation in island lineages. However, the input from plant systematists and other organismal biologists will continue to be important in calling attention to morphological and ecological variation in natural populations and in the discovery of "new" populations that can inform sampling for molecular analyses. Conversely, organismal biologists can provide basic information necessary for understanding the biology of the molecular variants, including diagnostic morphological characters, reproductive biology, habitat, etc. Such basic information is important when describing new species and arguing for their protection. Hybridization presents one of the most challenging problems in the conservation of insular plant diversity, with the process having the potential to decrease diversity in several ways including the merging of species into hybrid swarms or conversely hybridization may generate stable novel recombinants that merit recognition as new species. These processes are often operative in recent radiations in which intrinsic barriers to gene flow have not evolved. The knowledge and continued monitoring of plant populations in the dynamic landscapes on oceanic islands are critical to the preservation of their plant diversity.

  • 본 연구는 자연생태관 조성계획지인 강원도 평창군 용평면 노동리 노동계곡을 대상으로 식생조사를 실시하여 자연생태관 조성에 필요한 기초자료를 제공하고자 수행되었다. 노동계곡의 조사구에서 출현한 관속식물은 총 56과 121속 152종 24변종 2품종이며, 본 조사에서 감소추세종으로 관중과 도깨비부채가, 한국특산종으로 노랑무늬붓꽃이 출현하였다. 식물군락은 자연군락인 신갈나무-당단풍군락과 인공군락인 일본잎갈나무군락, 잣나무군락으로 구분되었으며, 신갈나무-당단풍군락은 다시 소나무아군락, 고로쇠나무아군락으로 구분되었다. 한국특산종으로 구분된 노랑무의붓꽃은 고로쇠나무아군락에 분포하였으며, 자연생태관을 조성할 때 이 군락에 대한 보존 관리방안을 마련해야 할 것으로 판단된다.

Peroxiredoxin I participates in the protection of reactive oxygen species-mediated cellular senescence

  • Peroxiredoxin I (Prx I) plays an important role as a reactive oxygen species (ROS) scavenger in protecting and maintaining cellular homeostasis; however, the underlying mechanisms are not well understood. Here, we identified a critical role of Prx I in protecting cells against ROS-mediated cellular senescence by suppression of $p16^{INK4a}$ expression. Compared to wild-type mouse embryonic fibroblasts (WT-MEFs), Prx $I^{-/-}$ MEFs exhibited senescence-associated phenotypes. Moreover, the aged Prx $I^{-/-}$ mice showed an increased number of cells with senescence associated-${\beta}$-galactosidase (SA-${\beta}$-gal) activity in a variety of tissues. Increased ROS levels and SA-${\beta}$-gal activity, and reduction of chemical antioxidant in Prx $I^{-/-}$ MEF further supported an essential role of Prx I peroxidase activity in cellular senescence that is mediated by oxidative stress. The up-regulation of $p16^{INK4a}$ expression in Prx $I^{-/-}$ and suppression by overexpression of Prx I indicate that Prx I possibly modulate cellular senescence through $ROS/p16^{INK4a}$ pathway.

The Frozen Elephant Trunk Technique: European Association for Cardio-Thoracic Surgery Position and Bologna Experience

  • Complex lesions of the thoracic aorta are traditionally treated in 2 surgical steps with the elephant trunk technique. A relatively new approach is the frozen elephant trunk (FET) technique, which potentially allows combined lesions of the thoracic aorta to be treated in a 1-stage procedure combining endovascular treatment with conventional surgery using a hybrid prosthesis. These are very complex and time-consuming operations, and good results can be obtained only if appropriate strategies for myocardial, cerebral, and visceral protection are adopted. However, the FET technique is associated with a non-negligible incidence of spinal cord injury, due to the extensive coverage of the descending aorta with the excessive sacrifice of intercostal arteries. The indications for the FET technique include chronic thoracic aortic dissection, acute or chronic type B dissection when endovascular treatment is contraindicated, chronic aneurysm of the thoracic aorta, and chronic aneurysm of the distal arch. The F ET technique is also indicated in acute type A aortic dissection, especially when the tear is localized in the aortic arch; in cases of distal malperfusion; and in young patients. In light of the great interest in the FET technique, the Vascular Domain of the European Association for cardio-thoracic Surgery published a position paper reporting the current knowledge and the state of the art of the FET technique. Herein, we describe the surgical techniques involved in the FET technique and we report our experience with the F ET technique for the treatment of complex aortic disease of the thoracic aorta.

주관 증후군의 수술적 치료: 척골 신경의 전방 근하 전위술과 전방 근막하 전위술의 비교 (Operative Treatment of the Cubital Tunnel Syndrome: Comparison of Anterior Submuscular Transposition and Anterior Subfascial Transposition of the Ulnar Nerve)

  • Surgical treatment of compressive ulnar neuropathy at the elbow has been performed with a wide variety of techniques. Among these techniques, anterior submuscular transposition of the ulnar nerve has been regarded as the method of choice by many authors. It has many advantages including a low recurrence rate, scar-free vascular bed, and protection from repeated trauma to the nerve. However, anterior submuscular transposition is technically demanding and requires more extensive soft tissue dissection. On the other hand, anterior subfascial transposition is less invasive, requires a relatively shorter operation time than the submuscular technique, and also can be done safely even in patiensts with elbow arthritis. We evaluated the clinical results of anterior submuscular transposition compared with anterior subfascial transposition. Fifteen patients underwent anterior submuscular transposition and ten patients underwent anterior subfascial transposition of the ulnar nerve. The mean follow-up time was 15 months (range 10 to 38 months) in the anterior submuscular transposition group and 7 months (range 6 to 15 months) in the anterior subfascial transposition group. According to the outcome status determination algorithm devised by Mowlavi, 3 patients (20%) showed total relief, 10 patiensts (66.7%) improvement and 2 patients (13.3%) no changes in the anterior submuscular transposition group. In the anterior subfascial transposition group, 2 patients (20%) showed total relief, 7 patients (70%) improvement and 1 patient (10%) displayed no changes. Statistically there was no significant difference of the clinical results between the two surgical techniques. Therefore we would suggest anterior subfascial transposition of the ulnar nerve as a preferred method for treatment of cubital tunnel syndrome.
