  • This paper proposes the color Cross-correlogram and its extraction method for efficient image retrieval. Color cross-correlogram represents the probability that different colors are existed at any two pixels whose distance is fixed in an image. Color cross-correlogram doesn't have the information about the region size that has a color, so color cross-correlogram can have good performance in retrieving images that have different size color regions. The experiments say that we can get the good retrieval results in the images that have various size color regions, and get the better retrieval results when using color cross-correlogram than those of retrieval using color correlogram.

  • For last several decades, the color correction methods have been proposed for HDR(high dynamic range) images. However, color distortion problems take place after correcting the colors such as halos, dominant color as well known. Accordingly, this article presents a novel approach in which the method consists of tone-mapping method and cone response function. In the proposed method, the tone mapping method is used to improve the contrast in the given HDR image based on chromatic and achromatic based on the CIEXYZ tristimulus value, expressed in c/m2. The cone response function is used to deal with mismatch between corrected image and displayed image as well as to estimate various human visual effects based on the CMCAT2000 color appearance model. The experimental results show that the proposed method yields better performance of color correction over the conventional method in subjective and quantitative quality, and color reproduction.

  • In this paper, we propose a content-based image retrieval using the color ratio and moment of object region. We acquire an optimal spatial information by the region splitting that utilizes horizontal-vertical projection and dominant color. It is based on hypothesis that an object locates in the center of image. We use color ratio and moment as feature informations. Those are extracted from the splitted regions and have the invariant property for various transformation, and besides, similarity measure utilizes a modified histogram intersection to acquire correlation information between bins in a color histogram. In experimental results, the proposed method shows more flexible and efficient performance than existing methods based on region splitting.

  • In order to detect the skin color area from input images, many prior researches have divided an image into the pixels having a skin color and the other pixels. In a still image or videos, it is very difficult to exactly extract the skin pixels because lighting condition and makeup generate a various variations of skin color. In this thesis, we propose a method that improves its performance using hierarchical merging of 3D skin color model and context informations for the images having various difficulties. We first make 3D color histogram distributions using skin color pixels from many YCbCr color images and then divide the color space into 3 layers including skin color region(Skin), non-skin color region(Non-skin), skin color candidate region (Skinness). When we segment the skin color region from an image, skin color pixel and non-skin color pixels are determined to skin region and non-skin region respectively. If a pixel is belong to Skinness color region, the pixels are divided into skin region or non-skin region according to the context information of its neighbors. Our proposed method can help to efficiently segment the skin color regions from images having many distorted skin colors and similar skin colors.

  • In this paper, a method of color image segmentation based on DBSCAN(Density Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise) using compactness of superpixels and texture information is presented. The DBSCAN algorithm can generate clusters in large data sets by looking at the local density of data samples, using only two input parameters which called minimum number of data and distance of neighborhood data. Superpixel algorithms group pixels into perceptually meaningful atomic regions, which can be used to replace the rigid structure of the pixel grid. Each superpixel is consist of pixels with similar features such as luminance, color, textures etc. Superpixels are more efficient than pixels in case of large scale image processing. In this paper, superpixels are generated by SLIC(simple linear iterative clustering) as known popular. Superpixel characteristics are described by compactness, uniformity, boundary precision and recall. The compactness is important features to depict superpixel characteristics. Each superpixel is represented by Lab color spaces, compactness and texture information. DBSCAN clustering method applied to these feature spaces to segment a color image. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, computer simulation is carried out to several outdoor images. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can provide good segmentation results on various images.

  • An image retrieval system retrieves and offers same of similar image based on various features of image. This paper present a brand image retrieval system based on color and shape of image. We use the image for a color information by dividing into the area and extracting the area color distribution histogram. We use for the shape information by preprocessing of the boundary extraction, the centroid extraction, angular sampling etc. and calculating of the sum of the distance from the centroid to the boundary, the standard deviation, and the rate of long axis to short axis. We accomplish the retrieval through a similarity measurement by using the color and shape information which is extracted in this way.

  • Color planning system can be treated as a decision support system which includes both the recommendation of main color and harmonious colors. In this paper, we propose techniques that are useful to enhance the harmonious color recommendation with the main color selected by user. In order to reflect the knowledge about suggestion of harmonious colors, we use Ostwald color harmony theory, that is very systematical and easy to implement. Actually, Ostwald color space is similar to HMMD color model in MPEG-7. Due to the similarity between two color spaces, Ostwald color space can be represented as a virtual HMMD color space. Accordingly, we propose a technique to align the HMMD color space with Ostwald color space, thereby it is capable of enhancing a performance to search the harmonious colors according to Ostwald harmony theory. For recommendation of delicate and more exquisite harmonious colors in equal hue plane, we made the virtual color space continuous. The system can recommend various harmonious colors according to Ostwald color harmony. He(she) can select harmonious colors among the suggestions from the system.

Although tar color additives have been used in various areas, safety problems are continuously being reported by several studies. For that reason, major countries like US, Japan, Europe are trying to update the safety information of tar color additives and the related management methods, and Korea also need to complement them based on the updated information for their safer use. Method: This report includes the compared information of all legally used tar color additives of each country, such as color additive name, compound name and chemical abstracts service registry number. Conclusion: It is expected that these investigated results will be useful as the basic materials for proper management guidelines of tar color additives in Korea.

  • This paper examines effectiveness of using color images instead of grayscale ones for automatic lipreading. First, we show the effect of color information for performance of humans' lipreading. Then, we compare the performance of automatic lipreading using features obtained by applying principal component analysis to grayscale and color images. From the experiments for various color representations, it is shown that color information is useful for improving performance of automatic lipreading; the best performance is obtained by using the RGB color components, where the average relative error reductions for clean and noisy conditions are 4.7% and 13.0%, respectively.

  • Generally, skin color information has been widely used at the face region extraction step of the face region recognition process. But many experimental results show that they are very sensitive to the given threshold range which is used to extract the face regions at the input image. In this paper, we propose a face region extraction algorithm based on an adaptive range decision for skin color. First we extract the pixels which are regarded as the candidate skin color pixels by using the given range for skin color extraction. Then, the ratio between the total pixels and the extracted pixels is calculated. According to the ratio, we adaptively decide the range of the skin color and extract face region. From the experiment results for the various images, the proposed algorithm shows more accurate results than the conventional algorithm.
