  • We propose an adaptive shaping controller equipped with the technologies of shaping and buffering VoIP packets arriving at the receiving end by the CAM-type controller. In order to conceal interarrival packet delay variation, the conventional jitter buffers force them to be too large, thereby causing the audio quality to suffer excessive delay. However, by using our proposed method, the delay caused by shaping operation dynamically increases or decreases on the level of jitter that exists with in the IP network. This makes the delay accommodates adaptively the network jitter condition. The less jitter network has the fewer delay the shaping controller requires for jitter elimination. And the CAM-type method generally makes the shaping operation faster and leads to processing packets in as little time as can. We analyse the packet loss and delay performance dependency on the average talk ratio and the number of jitter buffer entries in shaping controller. Surprising, we show that the average delay using our shaping controller is about 70msec. This performance is much better than with the delay equalization method which forces the receiving end to delay about 60msec.

  • A real-time frame-layer rate control algorithm with a token bucket traffic shaper is proposed for distortion variation minimization. The proposed rate control method uses a non-iterative optimization method for low computational complexity, and performs bit allocation at the frame level to minimize the average distortion over an entire sequence as well as variations in distortion between frames. The proposed algorithm does not produce time delay from encoding, and is suitable for real-time low-complexity video encoder. Experimental results indicate that the proposed control method provides better visual and PSNR performances than the existing rate control method.

  • Long-term GPS data analysis was performed in order to analyze the seasonal variation of tropospheric delay and the success rate of the ambiguity resolution. For this analysis, a total of 57 stations including 10 IGS stations in East Asia were processed together with double-differenced observables using Bernese GPS Software V5.0. The time span for this study ranges from 2002.0 to 2012.5 (10.5 years). The average baseline length is 339.0 km and the maximum reaches up to 2,000 km. The analysis is focused on two things: the annual variation of the tropospheric delay and the ambiguity resolution rate. The tropospheric delay is closely related to the weather condition, especially relative humidity, therefore it was estimated that the maximum would be in summer, while reaching its minimum in winter with the apparent seasonal variations. On the contrary, however, the success rate of the ambiguity resolution shows the opposite pattern: its maximum was in winter and minimum in summer. The fact seems to be induced by the surrounding conditions; that is, the trees thick with leaves near the GPS antenna interfere with GPS signals in summer. This seems to confirm partly that there is a distinct trend in the decreasing success rate since 2006 because the trees are growing every year. It is necessary to eliminate the factors that degrade the GPS quality and the tropospheric modeling for Korea needs to be studied further.

  • Improving the quality of service in IP networks is a major challenge for real-time voice communications. In particular, packet arrival-delay variation, so-called "jitter," is one of the main factors that degrade the quality of voice in mobile devices with the voice-over Internet protocol (VoIP). To resolve this issue, a receiver-based enhanced timing recovery algorithm combined with active jitter estimation is proposed. The proposed algorithm copes with the effect of transmission jitter by expanding or compressing each packet according to the predicted network delay and variations. Additionally, the active network jitter estimation incorporates rapid detection of delay spikes and reacts to changes in network conditions. Extensive simulations have shown that the proposed algorithm delivers high voice quality by pursuing an optimal trade-off between average buffering delay and packet loss rate.

  • In this paper, a new fully digital current control method of UPS inverter, which is based on an internal model control, is proposed. In the proposed control system, overshoots and oscillations due to the computation time-delay are compensated by explicit incorporation of the time-delay in the current control loop transfer function. The internal model controller is adopted to a second order deadbeat reference-to-output response which means that its response reaches the reference in two sampling time including computational time-delays. That is, the average current of filter capacitor is been exactly equal to the reference current with a time lag of two sampling intervals. Therefore, this method has an essentially overshoot free reference-to-output response with a minimum possible rise time. The effectiveness of the proposed control system has been verified by the simulation and experimental respectively. From the simulation and experimental results, the proposed system is achieved the robust characteristics to the calculation time delay and parameter variation as well as very fast dynamic performance, thus it can be effectively applied to the power supply for the critical load.

  • In this paper, we propose a protocol structure of a portable 4K Ultra High Definition (UHD) broadcast relay device that utilizes a 5G mobile communication network as a transport channel, and construct a prototype to conduct a broadcast relay performance test through a 5G mobile communication network. The test shows that the encoding time of the 4K UHD encoder is from a minimum of 86.28ms to a maximum of 88.41ms, the relay delay time in the 5G mobile communication network is 13.645ms on average, the delay variation is 17.49ms, and the glass-to-glass delay time is 289.90 on average, the delay variation is 27.63ms. Using the developed prototype, a relay test between Seoul and Anseong is conducted, and the possibility of 4K UHD broadcasting through a 5G mobile communication network is confirmed.

  • In this study, the temporal and spatial variation in precipitable water vapor (PWV) was analyzed for typhoon Ewiniar which had made landfall in the Korean peninsula in 2006. To make a contour map of PWV, zenith total delay (ZTD) was calculated using about 60 GPS permanent stations in Korea, and the pressure and temperature data of nearby AWS stations were interpolated and applied to the equation for calculating the PWV. While Typhoon Ewiniar was migrating north from the southern coast to the eastern coast of Korea, the PWV migrated showing a spatial distribution similar to that of rainfall. Also, the fluctuating pattern of the normalized PWV was analyzed, and the moving speed of the PWV was estimated using the delay time of the increase/decrease pattern in the eight-test stations. The result indicated that the moving speed of the PWV was about 35 km/h, which was similar to the average moving speed of the typhoon (38.9 km/h).

  • Earlier efforts on optical access concentrated on the design of PONs for the collection and distribution portion of the access network. The PON architecture is very simple but it requires a MAC protocol for control of upstream traffic. The MAC protocol must support QoS (Quality of Service) administration function by various traffic class, efficient dynamic bandwidth assignment function, CDV (Ceil Delay Variation) minimization function etc. This paper proposes a dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithm of the MAC protocol for a broadband access network using an Ethernet Passive Optical Network supporting various traffic class. We compare our proposed with MDRR algorithm using simulation, and confirmed that our proposed Request-Counter algorithm produces shorter average cell delay.

  • In this paper, we consider a generalized rule of retransmission request, identified as (Μ, $\sigma$) rule for multicopy transmission ARQ. Following a revised rule to conform with a strict criterion for requesting a retransmission, we can reduce the probability that a packet accepted by the receiving node is still being infected with errors. In turn, such amendment invokes a degradation of delay and throughput performance. For a quantitative evaluation of (Μ, $\sigma$) rule, we develop an analytical method to calculate probability of error remains, maximum throughput, average and peak delays, and delay variation. From the numerical examples made by use of the analytical method, we observe a performance trade-off between probability of error remains and delay/throughput. We also confirm the adaptability of (Μ, $\sigma$) rule to meet various QoS requirements.

  • A random and systematic jitter suppressed delay locked loop (DLL)-based clock generator with a delay-time voltage variance converter (DVVC) and an averaging circuit (AC) is presented. The DVVC senses the delay variance of each delay stage and generates a voltage. The AC averages the output voltages of two consecutive DVVCs to suppress the systematic and random delay variance of each delay stage in the VCDL. The DVVC and AC averages the delay time of successive delay stages and equalizes the delay time of all delay stages. In addition, a capacitor with a switch working effectively as a negative feedback function is introduced to reduce the variation of the loop filter output voltage. Measurement results of the DLL-based clock generator fabricated in a one-poly six-metal $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS process shows 13.4-ps rms jitter.
