Korean households' demand for food consumed away from home is on the steady increase. The ratio of eating-out expenditure of the household income, however, tends to decrease recently irrespective of income groups. This paper, therefore, aims to analyse the food-away-from-home expenditures of salary and wage earners' households by income decile group. The eating-out expenditure is modelled as a function of household income and then estimated using econometric methods such as regression, rolling regression, impulse response, and variance decomposition of forecast error. The regression results indicate that the higher the income decile group is, the lower the income elasticity of eating-out expenditure is, and the high income groups enjoy seasonal eating-out, the low groups do not. The coefficients of dynamic rolling regression are much smaller than those of static one, meaning that households tend to decrease the eating-out expenditure of their income. The impulse response analysis suggests that the eating-out expenditure increase of higher income groups lasts long relative to that of lower income groups. The variance decomposition, also, shows that household income plays much more important role in determining eating-out expenditure at the higher income groups than at the lower income groups.
Purpose - This study aims to explore the relationship between housing and land prices, with a specific emphasis on the impact of government policies on these factors such as land supply quantity and the ratio of residential land to total land supplied. The goal is to identify the most effective government intervention strategies for controlling both housing and land prices. Design/methodology/approach - Data from 70 primary and medium-sized cities in China spanning from 2003 to 2017 are utilized in this research. The analysis employs a panel vector autoregressive (PVAR) model, with a primary focus on examining the relationships among housing prices, land prices, and government intervention policies. Findings - Housing and land prices are influenced by various factors. Through impulse response analysis and variance decomposition, it is observed that both housing and land prices are predominantly influenced by their internal dynamics, with comparatively weaker effects attributed to policy interventions. Research implications or Originality - By investigating the impact of government policies on housing and land prices, This study establishes a foundation for effective price control measures. Our study advocates for a comprehensive examination of China's land supply mechanism to enhance understanding of the pathways through which government policies influence the markets.
Purpose - The purpose of the paper is to empirically investigate the asymmetric adjustment of loan and deposit interest rates among banks and non-bank depository institutions. Design/methodology/approach - We construct a VAR model using time series data comprising loan and deposit interest rates of banks and non-bank depository institutions, along with the call rate. Based on this model, we conduct impulse-response analysis and variance decomposition to investigate the dynamic relationship between the interest rates. Findings - In the case of banks and credit unions, the responses of deposit rates to the call rate are larger than the responses of loan rates, and we cannot find evidence of non-linear responses. In the case of savings banks, the responses of loan rates to the call rate are larger than the responses of deposit rates. The responses of loan rates to a positive call rate shock are statistically significant, while the responses of loan rates to a negative call rate shock are not statistically significant. Research implications or Originality - This study differs from previous research in that it examines the asymmetric response of loan and deposit rates of both banks and non-bank financial institutions to changes in the call rate. The implications for the impact of these findings on the financial system and income inequality are presented.
This study evaluates the potential by Chines region for entry of Korean logistics companies and retailers. The variables affecting e-commerce business and retail sales concerning the Chinese omni-channel market were extracted from a thorough literature review. Empirical analyses for variables based on 31 regions in China were performed. Results show that e-commerce is affected by disposable income and internet traffic and that retail sales are affected by urban and rural population, GRDP and urbanization. In addition, we performed variance decomposition analysis in order to estimate responses of logistics GDP(transport, storage and communication) and the number of Chinese mobile users. Exogenous shocks to logistics GDP and the number of mobile phone users play a strong role in explaining the forecast error of express service variance over time. Based on our results, we suggest 7 potential regions(Guangdong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang, Beijing, Shanghai, Liaoning and Shandong) as well as managerial implications for entry into China for logistics companies and retailers.
We examine the interdependence of the major Asia-Pacific stock markets including S&P 500, FTSE 100, Kualar Lumpur Composite, Straits Times, Hang Seng, NIKKEI 225 and KOSPI 200 from October 4, 1995 to March 31,2000. The analysis employs the vector-auto-regression, Granger causality, impulse response function and variance decomposition using daily returns on the national stock market indices. The findings in this paper indicate that the volatilities of all countries has grown after IMF crisis, while there is no significance in cointegration test of both total period and sub-periods. This result implies that investors are able to get abnormal returns by investment diversification according to the portfolio theory. We find that while the effect from NIKKEI 225 to others is relatively weak, the interdependence from S&P 500 to other countries is strong. Also we find that the strong effect from Straits Times to Hang Seng exists. This study suggests that there is slight feedback relation between KOSPI 200 and Kualar Lumpur Composite, Straits Times, Hang Seng stock market.

The result of variance decomposition through yield of Treasury of 30 year maturity of USA, S&P 500 index, stock price of KEPCO has 76.12% of impulse of KEPCO stock price at short-term horizon, but they have 51.40% at long-term horizon. After one year, they occupy 13.65%, and 33.25%. So their effects are increased. By the way, S&P 500 index and yield of Treasury of 30 year maturity of USA have relatively more effect for forecast of stock price oi KEPCO at short-term & long-term. The yield of Treasury of 30 year maturity of USA more than S&P 500 index have more effect for stock price of KEPCO. It is why. That foreign investors through fall of stock price of USA invest for emerging market is less than movement for emerging market of hedge funds through effect of fall of yield of Treasury of 30 year maturity of USA, according to relative effects for stock price of Korea companies. The result of variance decomposition through won/dollar foreign exchange rate, yield of corporate bond of 3 year maturity, Korea Stock Price index(KOSPI), stock price of KEPCO has 81.33% of impulse of KEPCO stock price at short-term horizon, but they have 41.73% at long-term horizon. After one year, they occupy 23.57% and 34.70%. So their effects are increased. By the way, KOSPI and won/dollar foreign exchange rate have relatively more effect for forecast of stock price of KEPCO at short-term & long-term. The won/dollar foreign exchange rate more than KOSPI have more effect for stock price of KEPCO. It is why. The recovery of economic condition through improvement of company revenue causes of rising of KOSPI. But, if persistence of low interest rate continues, fall of won/dollar foreign exchange rate will be more aggravated. And it will give positive effect for stock price of KEPCO. This gives more positive effect at two main reason. Firstly, through fall of won/dollar foreign exchange rate and rising of credit rating of Korea will be followed. Therefore, foreign investors will invest more funds to Korea. Secondly, inflow of foreign investment funds through profit of won/dollar foreign exchange rate and stock investment will be occurred. If appreciation of won against dollar is forecasted, foreign investors will buy won. Through this won, investors will do investment. Won/dollar foreign exchange rate is affected through external factors of yen/dollar foreign exchange rate, etc. Therefore, the exclusion of instable factors for foreign investors through rising of credit rating of Korea is necessary things.
This study investigates the export behavior of Busan, Gwangyang and Incheon Port. The monthly data cover the period from January 2000 to December 2015. We employ six export functions composed of various exchange rates and industrial production index. This paper finds that the nominal effective exchange rate is more appropriate for explaining the export behaviors of the three ports, regardless of the narrow and wide indices which comprise 26 and 61 economies for the nominal and real indices respectively. This paper tests whether exchange rate and industrial production are stationary or not, rejecting the null hypothesis of a unit root in each of the level variables and of a unit root for the residuals from the cointegration at the 5 percent significance level. The error-correction model is estimated to find that both Gwangyang and Incheon ports are much slower than Busan port in adjusting the short-run disequilibrium and Gwangyang port is a little slower than Incheon port. The rolling regressions show that the influence of exchange rate as well as industrial production tends to decrease in all of three ports. The variance decomposition, however, shows that the export variables are very exogenous and the export of Busan Port is the least exogenous and that of Gwangyang Port the most. This result indicates that the economic variables such as exchange rate and economic activity affect the export of Busan Port more strongly than that of Gwangyang and Incheon Port.
We investigate the dynamic relationship between stock returns and investors' behavior. For the putpose of the paper, daily KOSPI returns are decomposed into two parts: overnight returns and daytime returns. Overnight return is measured by the closing price of the previous day and the opening price of the current day. And daytime return is measured by the opening and closing prices of the current day. Qvernight returns are assumed to reflect global economic information, and daytime returns, domestic or local information. Major results are as follows: Foreign investors' behavior has an effect on the overnight returns more than the daytime returns. Individual investors' behavior, however, has little effect on the overnight returns, but not the daytime returns. Consequently, forecast error variance decomposition shows that the variance explanation power of foreign investors is higher in overnight returns rather than in the daytime returns. And the variance explanation power of individual investors is higher in daytime returns rather than in overnight returns. It implies that foreign investors employ dynamic hedging strategies and give more weight to global economic information rather than to domestic information. We conclude that investment behavior of foreign investors and domestic individuals is based on different economic information. This paper's findings are consistent with the economic situation that the Korean capital markets have faced since the global financial crisis of August 2008.
The purpose of this study is to identify the leading price between Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price and to analyze the dynamic effect of the regional producer price using the panel VAR model. In the process of analysis, it was confirmed that there are unit roots in the monthly data of Jeju and Wando's oliver flounder producer price. So, in order to avoid spurious regression, the rate change of producer price which carries out log difference was used in the analysis. As a result of the analysis, first, the panel Granger causality test showed that the influence of the change rate of producer price in oliver flounder in Jeju was slightly larger than that in Wando, but it was found that each region all leads the change rate of the producer price in oliver flounder. Second, the panel VAR estimation showed that the rate change of producer price in Jeju and Wando a month ago had a statistically significant effect on the change rate of producer price of each region. Third, the impulse response analysis indicated that other regions are affected a little more than the same region in case of the occurrence of the impact on the error terms of the change rate of produce price in Jeju and Wando oliver flounder. Fourth, the variance decomposition analysis showed that the change rate of producer price in the two regions was higher explained by Jeju compared to Wando. In conclusion, it is expected that the above results can not only be useful as basic data for the stabilization of oliver flounder producer price and the establishment of policies for easing volatility but can also help the oliver flounder industry operate its business.
Combining recent advances in causal flows with time series analysis, relationships among eight North American natural gas spot market prices are examined. Results indicate that price discovery tends to occur in excess demand regions and move to excess supply regions. Across North America, the U.S. Midwest region represented by Chicago spot market is the most important market for price discovery. The Ellisburg-Leidy Hub in Pennsylvania is important in price discovery, especially for markets in the eastern two-thirds of the U.S. Malin Hub in Oregon is important for the western markets including the AECO Hub in Alberta, Canada.
