A triode for alternating current (TRIAC) dimming light emitting diode (LED) driver, which adopts a variable switched capacitor for LED dimming and LED power regulation, is proposed in this paper. The proposed LED driver is power efficient, reliable, and long lasting because of the TRIAC switch that serves as its main switch. Similar to previous TRIAC dimmers for lamps, turn-on timing of a TRIAC switch can be controlled by a volume resistor, which modulates the equivalent capacitance of the proposed variable switched capacitor. Thus, LED power regulation against source voltage variation and LED dimming control can be achieved by the proposed LED driver while meeting the global standards for power factor (PF) and total harmonic distortion (THD). The long life and high power efficiency of the proposed LED driver make it appropriate for industrial lighting applications, such as those for streets, factories, parking garages, and emergency stairs. The detailed analysis of the proposed LED driver and its design procedure are presented in this paper. A prototype of 80 W was fabricated and verified by experiments, which showed that the efficiency, PF, and THD at Vs = 220 V are 93.8%, 0.95, and 22.5%, respectively; 65 W of LED dimming control was achieved with the volume resistor, and the LED power variation was well mitigated below 3.75% for 190 V < Vs < 250 V.
The main two drawbacks of the Sin91e Stage PFC (SS-PFC) converters employing a DCM Boost PFC cell are relatively high voltage stress on the bulk capacitor and the input current harmonic distortion. The high voltage stress on bulk capacitor makes the SS-PFC converter impractical in a universal input application and the input current harmonic distortion lowers power factor. In this paper a selective variable frequency control that reduces the voltage stress on the bulk capacitor and the input current harmonic distortion is proposed. Computer simulation results of the proposed control method are presented.
We present a novel operational amplifier preset technique for a switched-capacitor circuit to reduce the acquisition time by improving the slewing. The acquisition time of a variable gain amplifier (VGA) using the proposed technique is reduced by 30% compared with a conventional one; therefore, the power consumption of the VGA is decreased. For additional power reduction, a programmable capacitor array scheme is used in the VGA. In the 0.13 ${\mu}m$ CMOS process, the VGA, which consists of three-stages, occupies 0.33 $mm^2$ and dissipates 19.2 mW at 60 MHz with a supply voltage of 1.2 V. The gain range is 36.03 dB, which is controlled by a 10-bit control word with a gain error of ${\pm}0.68$ LSB.
This paper presents a control method for variable-speed motor drives that do not use a DC-link electrolytic capacitor. The proposed circuit consists of a power factor correction converter for boosting the DC-link voltage, an inverter for driving the motor, and a small DC-link film capacitor. By employing a small DC-link capacitor, the proposed circuit that is small, and a low cost and weight are achieved. However, because the DC-link voltage varies periodically, the control of the circuit is more difficult than that of the conventional method. Using the proposed control method, an inverter can be controlled reliably even when the capacitance of the DC-link capacitor is very small. Experiments are performed using a 1.5-kW inverter with a $20-{\mu}F$ DC-link capacitor, and the experimental results are analyzed thoroughly.
This paper proposes a novel soft starting algorithm by using PWM inverter technique to control an amplitude of the motor starting current at a single-phase induction motor (SPIM). Traditional SPIM starting methods such as a Split-Phase, Capacitor-Start, Permanent-Split Capacitor (PSC), Capacitor-Start Capacitor-Run (CSCR), basically cannot control the magnitude of starting current due to the fixed system structures. Therefore, in this paper, a soft starting algorithm based on a proportional resonant (PR) control with a variable and constant frequency is proposed to reduce the inrush current and starting up time. In addition, a transition algorithm for operation modes is devised to generate a constant voltage and constant frequency (CVCF). The validity and effectiveness of the proposed soft starting method and transition algorithm are verified through experimental results.

This paper presents a variable gain amplifier (VGA) for an analog front-end (AFE) of ultrasound medical imaging. This VGA has a closed-loop topology and shows a 37-dB-linear characteristic with a single-stage amplifier. It consists of an op-amp, a non-binary-weighted capacitor array, and a gain-control block. This non-binary-weighted capacitor array reduces the required number of capacitors and the complexity of the gain-control block. The VGA has been fabricated in a 0.35-mm CMOS process. This work gives the largest gain range of 37 dB per stage, the largest P1 dB of 9.5 dBm at the 3.3-V among the recent VGA circuits available in the literature. The voltage gain is controlled in the range of [-10, 27] dB in a linear-in-dB scale with 16 steps by a 4-bit digital code. The VGA has a bandpass characteristic with a passband of [20 kHz, 8 MHz].

This paper proposes a method to stabilize the output voltage of the secondary side of an Inductive Power Transfer (IPT) system through tuning/detuning via a serial tuned DC Voltage-controlled Variable Capacitor (DVVC). The equivalent capacitance of the DVVC changes with the conduction period of a diode in the DVVC controlled by DC voltage. The output voltage of an IPT system can be made constant when this DVVC is used as a variable resonant capacitor combined with a PI controller generating DC control voltage according to the fluctuations of the output voltage. Since a passive diode instead of an active switch is used in the DVVC, there are no active switch driving problems such as a separate voltage source or gate drivers, which makes the DVVC especially advantageous when used at the secondary side of an IPT system. Moreover, since the equivalent capacitance of the DVVC can be controlled smoothly with a DC voltage and the passive diode generates less EMI than active switches, the DVVC has the potential to be used at much higher frequencies than traditional switch mode capacitors.

The AMR(automatic meter reading) system has been increasingly and widely used for its efficient and intelligent management, which is a technology that automatically collects consumption data from a water meter or energy metering device. The digital meter instead of the mechanical meter should be used in the system. Up to now, various types of sensor to measure the water flow rate have been used in the digital water meter, for example, reed switch, photo IR approximate sensor, ultrasonic sensor, electromagnetic sensor, etc. In this paper, a new sensing technology, where a variable capacitor and digital circuit were used for sensing the water flow rate, was proposed. The circuit was designed and verified by Pspice simulation. And a PCB board for the circuit was fabricated. After then, a prototype of digital water meter using a variable capacitor to measure the water flow rate was fabricated. The function tests of the fabricated digital water meter were performed, and it was found that the meter worked properly. Since the new technology has much better properties in terms of cost and power consumption compared to conventional technologies, it should be one of the major digital water meter technologies in the future.
In this work, We investigated the frequency-dependent capacitance tunability of a metal-ferroelectric-metal variable capacitor fabricated using ALD $HfO_2$ ferroelectric material. The capacitance of the MFM capacitor could be tuned as a function of the bias voltage, up to the microwave frequency range. We observed a capacitance tuning range of ~3 % up to 2.5 GHz, proving the feasibility of the use of ALD $HfO_2$ in the microwave frequency band.

This paper presents about an example of circuit design and characteristics of inverter according to the variable capacitance of the DC voltage source separation capacitor used in ZVS-HB type high frequency resonant inverter. The soft switching technology known as ZVS is used to reduce turn off loss at switching. In the event the capacitance of the DC voltage source separation capacitor is varied, the analysis of inverter circuit has generally described by using normalized parameter and operating characteristics have been evaluated in terms of switching frequency and parameters. According to the calculated characteristics value, a method of the circuit designs and operating characteristic of the inverter is also presented in this paper. In addition, this paper proves the validity of theoretical analysis through the experiment. This proposed inverter shows that it can be practically used in future as power source system for the lighting equipment of discharge lamp, DC-DC converter etc.
