  • The nanostructural graphene/vanadium oxide (graphene/$V_2O_5$) composite with enhanced capacitance was synthesized by the electro-deposition in 0.5 M $VOSO_4$ solution. The morphology of composites was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), x-ray diffraction pattern (XRD), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The oxidation states of the electro-deposited vanadium oxide was found to be $V^{5+}$ and $V^{4+}$. The morphology of the prepared graphene/$V_2O_5$ composite exhibits a netlike nano-structure with $V_2O_5$ nanorods in about 100 nm diameter, which could lead a better contact between electrolyte an electrode. The composite with a deposition time of 4,000 s exhibits the specific capacitance of $854mF/cm^2$ at a scan rate of 20 mV/s and the capacitance retention of 53% after 1000 CV cycles.

  • The metal oxide/graphene nanocomposites are promising functional materials for high capacitive electrode material of secondary batteries, and high sensitive material of high performance gas sensors. In this study, vanadium dioxide($VO_2$) nanostructrures were grown on CVD graphene which was synthesized on Cu foil by thermal CVD, and exfoliated graphene which was exfoliated from highly oriented pyrolytic graphite(HOPG) using a vapor transport method. As results, $VO_2$ nanostructures on CVD graphene were grown preferential growth on abundant functional groups of graphene grain boundaries. The functional groups are served to nucleation site of $VO_2$ nanostructures. On the other hand, 2D & 3D $VO_2$ nanostructures were grown on exfoliated graphene due to uniformly distributed functional groups on exfoliated graphene surface. The characteristics of morphology controlled growth of $VO_2$/graphene nanocomposites would be applied to fabrication process for high capacitive electrode materials of secondary batteries, and high sensitive materials of gas sensors.

  • Amorphous vanadium titanates (aVTOs) are examined for use as a negative electrode in lithium-ion batteries. These amorphous mixed oxides are synthesized in nanosized particles (<100 nm) and flocculated to form secondary particles. The $V^{5+}$ ions in aVTO are found to occupy tetrahedral sites, whereas the $Ti^{4+}$ ions show fivefold coordination. Both are uniformly dispersed at the atomic scale in the amorphous oxide matrix, which has abundant structural defects. The first reversible capacity of an aVTO electrode ($295mAhg^{-1}$) is larger than that observed for a physically mixed electrode (1:2 $aV_2O_5$ | $aTiO_2$, $245mAhg^{-1}$). The discrepancy seems to be due to the unique four-coordinated $V^{5+}$ ions in aVTO, which either are more electron-accepting or generate more structural defects that serve as $Li^+$ storage sites. Coin-type Li/aVTO cells show a large irreversible capacity in the first cycle. When they are prepared under nitrogen (aVTO-N), the population of surface hydroxyl groups is greatly reduced. These groups irreversibly produce highly resistive inorganic compounds (LiOH and $Li_2O$), leading to increased irreversible capacity and electrode resistance. As a result, the material prepared under nitrogen shows higher Coulombic efficiency and rate capability.

  • The pure crystalline $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder has been prepared by a simple solid state reaction of $Li_2CO_3$ and $V_2O_3$ precursors under nitrogen gas containing 10 mol % hydrogen gas flow. The structure of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was analyzed using Xray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The stoichiometric $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ powder was used as anode active material for lithium secondary batteries. Its electrochemical properties were investigated by cyclic voltammetry and constant current methods using lithium foil electrode. The observed specific discharge capacity and charge capacity were 360 mAh/g and 260 mAh/g during the first cycle, respectively. In addition, the cyclic efficiency of this cell was 72.2% in the first cycle. The specific capacity of $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode rapidly declines as the current rate increases and retains only 30 % of the capacity of 0.1C rate at 1C rate. The crystallinity of the $Li_{1.1}V_{0.9}O_2$ anode decrease as discharge reaction proceeds. However, the relative intensity of main peaks was almost recovered when the cell was charged up to 1.5 V.

  • Vanadium Pentoxide (V2O5) has been emerged as alternative electrode materials for supercapacitors due to their low cost, natural abundance, and environmental friendliness. Graphene (GR) loaded with V2O5 can exhibit enhanced specific capacitance. In this study, we present three-dimensional (3D) crumpled graphene (CGR) decorated with V2O5. The V2O5-graphene composites were synthesized from a colloidal mixture of graphene oxide (GO) and Ammonium metavanadate (NH4VO3), via aerosol spray drying and post heat treatment process. The average size of composite was ranged from 1.82 to 4.6 ㎛. Morphology of the composite changed from a crumpled paper ball to spherical ball having relatively smooth surface as the content of V2O5 increased in the composites. The electrochemical performance of the V2O5-graphene composites was examined. The V2O5-graphene composite electrode showed the specific capacitance of 312 F/g. In addition, the device possessed acceptable cyclic stability, with 84% after 2000 cycles at 2 A/g. These outstanding properties are expected to make the composites prepared in this study as promising electrode materials for supercapacitor applications.

  • β-AgVO3 nanorods have been successfully synthesized using a soft chemistry route followed by heat treatment. They were characterized by X-ray diffraction and field emission scanning electron microscopy, and their electrochemical properties were investigated using cyclic voltammetry, impedance spectra, and charge-discharge tests. The results showed that the smooth-surfaced nanorods are very uniform and well dispersed, with diameters of ~100-200 nm and lengths of the order of several macrometers. The nanorods deliver a maximum specific discharge capacity of 275 mAh g-1 at 30 mA g-1. They also demonstrated good rate capability with a discharge capacity at the 100th cycle of 51 mAh g-1.

  • Vanadium oxide based materials have been studied as novel negative electrode materials in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because of their high specific capacity. In this study, potassium metavanadate ($KVO_3$) was synthesized and its electrochemical properties are evaluated as a negative electrode materials. The aqueous solution of $NH_4VO_3$ is mixed with a stoichiometric amount of KOH. The solution is boiled to remove $NH_3$ gas and dried to obtain a precipitate. The obtained $KVO_3$ powders are heat-treated at 300 and $500^{\circ}C$ for 8 h in air. As the heat treatment temperature increases, the initial reversible capacity decreases, but the cycle performance and Coulombic efficiency are improved slightly. On the contrary, the electrochemical performances of the $KVO_3$ electrodes are greatly improved when a polyacrylic acid (PAA) as binder was used instead of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and a fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) was used as electrolyte additive. The initial reversible capacity of the $KVO_3$ is 1169 mAh/g and the Coulombic efficiency is improved to 76.3% with moderate cycle performance. The $KVO_3$ has the potential as a novel high-capacity negative electrode materials.

  • Although the graphene is regarded as a promising material for the electrode of the supercapacitor, its electrochemical performance is still less enough to satisfy the current demand raised in real applications. Here, using a home laser engraver, firstly we performed the prompt and selective reduction of the graphene oxide to produce multilayered and highly porous graphene maintaining high electrical conductivity. Subsequently, the resulting graphene was conformally deposited with pseudocapacitive thin VOx using atomic layer deposition in order to enhance specific capacitance of graphene. We observed that various forms of VOx exist in the VOx/graphene hybrid through XPS analysis. The hybrid showed highly improved specific capacitance (~189 F/g) as compared to the graphene without VOx. We expect that our approach is accepted as one of the alternatives to produce the graphene-based electrode for various energy storage devices.
