  • This study aimes to understand the principles in Theo Van Doesburg's architectural concept. Generally, Theo Van Doesburg has been thought that he betrayed De Stijl by acting contrary to the Neo-Plasticism which was constituted in early De Stijl by Mondrian and himself and by suggesting opposite one, Elementarism. Therefore this study tried to understand the principles that make his architectural concept, confirming the background of Elementarism. After studing relation, which Theo Van Doesburg has used, between space and color, it is concluded that he has unchanged principles of architectural concept from early De Stijl to last, opposite to general appreciation. So, Theo Van Doesburg acted to maintain equilibrium that exists for balancing the two elemental forces which contrast each other in relation between space and color. The equilibrium which he looked for aims to constitute harmonized dynamic space by dynamic rythem of equilibrium instead of Neo-Plastic effect. And using color, which used to be producing dynamic effect, he intended to maintain static effect for making dynamic rythem of equllibrium by the principles he made.

  • It is difficult to edit large-scale digital maps because of problems of cost and process and it is carried out by aerial photogrammetry in renewal periods. Five years of update period cannot provide exact data required in the fast-moving age. This study is to analyze applicability and impact for editing digital map of road system using the GPS-Van. Results are compared with accuracy of the data acquisition with GPS-Van positioning. INS data are affected by the barrier to receive GPS data. But high accuracy were achieved by thorough plans according to work order. By using GPS Van and fieldwork at the same time for editing and renewal of digital map, it is expected that this method can be used to reduce costs in the economic and temporal aspects, and provide rapid and accurate digital map of road system.

  • Van de Vusse reactors show the maximum points in input-output steady state maps and dramatic changes in their dynamic characteristics around those maximum points. According to their operating regions, there appear sign changes in steady state gains and nonlinear characteristics such as non-minimum phase dynamics which cause difficulties in applying controllers. Many nonlinear controllers that are available and newly designed are applied to these Van de Vusse reactor processes and their performances are tested. Reactor examples with real reactions have been reported. However, due to difficulties in constructing and operating chemical reactor systems, they are not adequate to be used for real applications of control experiments and hence most of results are based on simulations studies. Here, we propose a liquid level system that realizes most of the steady state and dynamic characteristics of Van de Vusse reactor, and two nonlinear control methods that can be used as base methods to compare nonlinear controllers newly designed. Liquid level experimental system and two nonlinear control methods are very simple and can be used to test performances of nonlinear controllers in practice.

  • The knowledge of the flash point of the mixtures is very important for prevention and protection of fire in the industrial field. The flash points for the water+2-propanol system were measured by using Tag open-cup apparatus(ASTM D1310-86). The experimental data were compared with the values calculated by the Raoult's law, the Van Laar equation and the NRTL(Non Random Two Liquids) equation. The calculated values based on the Van Laar and NRTL equations were found to be better than those based on the Raoult's law. It was concluded that Van Laar and NRTL equations were more effective than the Raoult' law at describing the activity coefficients for non-ideal solution such as the water+2-propanol system. And the predictive curve of the flash point prediction model based on the Van Law equation described the experimentally-derived data more effectively than was the case when the prediction model was based upon the NRTL equation.

  • A total of 98 vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium (VREF) isolates (58 isolates from patients and 40 isolates from poultry) were compared based on their antimicrobial susceptibility, Tn1546 element organization, and pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) patterns. This comparison aided in determining the relationships between the groups of isolates. All the VREF isolates harbored the vanA gene; however, 29 (29.6%) of the isolates exhibited the VanB phenotype-vanA genotype. Furthermore, the VREF isolates from humans and poultry exhibited distinct antimicrobial resistance patterns. The PCR mapping of the Tn1546 elements exhibited 12 different transposon types (A to L). The VREF isolates of poultry were classified into types A to D, whereas the human isolates were classified into types E to L. A PFGE analysis demonstrated a high degree of clonal heterogeneity in both groups of isolates; however, the distinct VREF clones appeared in each group of isolates. The deletion of the vanX-vanY genes or insertion of IS1216V in the intergenic region from the vanX-vanY genes is directly associated with the incongruence of the VanB phenotype-vanA genotype in human VREF isolates. These data suggest that the VREF isolates exhibit distinct phenotypic and genotypic traits according to their origins, which suggests that no evidence exists to substantiate the clonal spread or transfer of vancomycin resistance determinants between humans and poultry.

  • Objectives: Enterococcus faecalis is a gram positive diplococci, highly versatile and a normal commensal of the gut microbiome. Resistance to vancomycin is a serious issue in various health-care setting exhibited by vancomycin resistant Enterococci (VRE) due to the alteration in the peptidoglycan synthesis pathway. This study is thus aimed to detect the VRE from the patients with root caries from the clinical isolates of E. faecalis and to evaluate the in-silico interactions between vanA and the Aegles marmelos bio-compounds. Methods: E. faecalis was phenotypically characterized from 20 root caries samples and the frequency of vanA and vanB genes was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Further crude methanolic extracts from the dried leaves of A. marmelos was assessed for its antimicrobial activity. This is followed by the selection of five A. marmelos bio-compounds for the computational approach towards the drug ligand interactions. Results: 12 strains (60%) of E. faecalis was identified from the root caries samples and vanA was detected from two strains (16%). Both the stains showed the presence of vanA and none of the strains possessed vanB. Crude extract of A. marmelos showed promising antibacterial activity against the VRE strains. In-silico analysis of the A. marmelos biocompounds revealed Imperatonin as the best compound with high docking energy (-8.11) and hydrogen bonds with < 140 TPSA (Topological polar surface area) and zero violations. Conclusion: The present study records the VRE strains among the root caries with imperatorin from A. marmelos as a promising drug candidate. However the study requires further experimentation and validation.

  • Numerical convergence and stability of TVD schemes have been applied in the FUNWAVE-TVD model were compared. The fourth order accurate MUSCL-TVD scheme using minmod limiter suggested by Yamamoto and Daiguji (1993), the fourth order accurate MUSCL-TVD scheme using van-Leer limiter suggested by Erduran et al. (2005) and the second order accurate MUSCL-TVD scheme using van-Leer limiter in Zhou et al. (2001) were compared. Comparisons of the numerical scheme were conducted with experimental data of Vincent and Briggs irregular wave experiments. In comparison with the fourth order accurate scheme using van-Leer limiter, the fourth order accurate scheme using minmod limiter is less dissipative but required lower CFL condition for stable numerical solution. On the other hand, the scheme using van-Leer limiter required smaller resolution spatial grid due to numerical dissipation, but relatively higher CFL condition can be used compared to the scheme using minmod limiter. In the breaking wave experiments which were conducted using high resolution spatial grid to reduce numerical dissipation, the characteristic of the schemes can be clearly observed. Numerical instabilities and blow-up of the numerical solutions were found in the irregular wave breaking simulation with the scheme using minmod limiter. However, the simulation can be completed with the scheme using van-Leer limiter, but required low CFL condition. Good agreements with the observed data were also observed in the results using van-Leer limiter.
