  • In this study, we present a multidimensional open system for valveless pumping (VP). This system consists of an elastic tube connected to two open tanks filled with a fluid under gravity. The two-dimensional elastic tube model is constructed based on the immersed boundary method, and the tank model is governed by a system of ordinary differential equations based on the work-energy principle. The flows into and out of the elastic tube are modeled in terms of the source/sink patches inside the tube. The fluid dynamics of this system is generated by the periodic compress-and-release action applied to an asymmetric region of the elastic tube. We have developed an algorithm to couple these partial differential equations and ordinary differential equations using the pressure-flow relationship and the linearity of the discretized Navier-Stokes equations. We have observed the most important feature of VP, namely, the existence of a unidirectional net flow in the system. Our computations are focused on the factors that strongly influence the occurrence of unidirectional flows, for example, the frequency, compression duration, and location of pumping. Based on these investigations, some case studies are performed to observe the details of the ow features.

  • This paper proposes a tube pump composed of small-sized cams and followers for an implantable intrathecal drug infusion device. Each followers is driven by a cam and liquid is discharged by a sequential reciprocal motion of the followers. The advantage of this structure is that it allows the pump to be clean and valveless. To design a small-sized, low power pump some analysis were performed to determine the design parameters of the cam, follower and the tube. To verify the feasibility of the experiment, a prototype was manufactured and its operating characteristics were investigated. Experimental results were in accordance with the expected results obtained from analysis.

  • Recently, there has been increased incessantly an interest in research area on micro-fluidic pump for electronic and biological applications. The proposed pump takes an unobtrusive operation into the simple displacing mechanism using peristaltic traveling waves without the physical moving valves. And, this piezopump makes up a panel type design. The ATILA simulation was performed to estimate the operating frequency of the vibrating wave mode, to optimize the design conditions of piezopump such as structure, elastic body material, piezoelectric ceramics, and to analyze the distribution of vibration displacement. The best measured value of the pumping rate is about $118{\mu}l$/min under the following parameters : 4-wave mode, 50kHz operating frequency, $200V_p$.

  • Using the extensional vibration mode of PZT bar, a piezopump is successfully made. The traveling extensional wave along the circumference of the bar is obtained by dividing standing waves which are temporally and spatially phase shifted by 90 degrees from each other. The proposed piezopump is consisted of coaxial cylindrical shells that are bonded piezoelectric ceramic bar.

  • Micropump is very useful component in micro/nano fluidics and bioMEMS applications. Using the flexural vibration mode of PZT bar, a piezopump is successfully made. The PZT bar is polarized with thickness direction. The proposed structure for the piezo-pump consists of an input and an output port, piezoelectric ceramic actuator, actuator support, diaphragm. The traveling flexural wave along the bar is obtained by dividing two standing waves which are temporally and spatially phase shifted by 90 degrees from each other. Fluid is drawn into a forming chamber, eventually the forming chamber closes trapping the fluid therein. The finite elements analysis on the proposed pump model is carried out to verify its operation principle and design by the commercial FEM software. Components of piezopump were made, assembled, and tested to validate the concepts of the proposed pump and confirm the simulation results. The performance of the proposed piezopump the highest pressure level of 83.4kHz.

  • In this paper, the pumping performance of a piezoelectric valveless micropump is simulated with a commercial finite element analysis software, COMSOL Multiphysics. The micropump developed in the previous work is composed of a 4-layer lightweight piezo-composite actuator (LIPCA), a polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) pump chamber, and two diffusers. The piezoelectric domain, structural domain and fluid domain are coupled in the simulation. Water flow rates are numerically predicted for geometric parameters of the micropump. Based on this study, the micropump is optimally designed to obtain its highest pumping performance.

  • In this paper, a valveless bubble-actuated fluid micropump was has been developed and its performance was tested. The valveless micropump consists of the lower plate, the middle plate, the upper plate and a resistive heater. The lower plate includes the nozzle-diffuser elements and the double-chamber. Nozzle-diffuser elements and a double-chamber are fabricated on the silicon wafer by the DRIE(Deep Reactive Ion Etching) process. The lower plate also has inlet/outlet channels for fluid flow. The middle plate is made of glass and plays the role of the diaphragm. The chamber in the upper plate is filled with deionized water, and which contacts with the resistive heater. The resistive heater is patterned on a silicon substrate by Ti/Pt sputtering. Three plates and the resister heater are laminated by the aligner and bonded in the anodic bonder. Since the bubble is evaporated and condensed periodically in the chamber, the fluid flows from inlet to outlet with respect to the diffusion effect. In order to avoid backflow, the double chamber system is introduced. Analytical and experimental results show the validity of the developed double-chamber micropump.
