  • Physicochemical properties of six cultivars of Cheju citrus fruits were investigated according to the harvest date. The fruit index of Citrus. unshiu Marc. var. miynawa, C. $natsudaidai{\;}H_{AYATA}$ and C. sudachi ranged from 1.14 to 1.38 with oval form. The fruit index of C. grandis OSEECK, C. aurantiun LINN and C. platymamma. Hort. SWINGLE ranged from 0.89 to 1.03 with a round form. The fruit weight showed the heaviest in C. grandis, followed by C. natsudaidai, C. aurantiun, C. unshiu, C. platymamma and C. sudachi. The rate of flesh showed the highest in C. unshiu, followed by C. platymamma, C. nat녀daidai, C. sudachi, C. grandis and C. aurantiun. The ratio of juice showed the highest in C. unshiu, followed by C. sudachi, C. platymamma., C. natsudaidai,, C. grandis, C. aurantiun. C. unshiu and C. platymamma, which showed a possibility to be used as raw materials for juices. The soluble solid and the Brix/acid ratio of all the varieties increased as the fruits ripen. Especially those of C. unshiu and C. platymamma were high(10.39, 7.67) in full ripe compared to other varieties. Acid content of C. natsudaidai, C. aurantiun, C. grandis and C. sudachi was sustained higher than $3{\sim}5%$ from the middle of September to the middle of January, and there was the possibility of manufacturing aromatic products like citrus vinegar. The C. sudachi contained the highest content of vitamin C,77.48 mg/100 g. The correlation between vitamin C extraction and season was insignificant. Rind and color value of all varieties were investigated, and the value of the L, a and b increased as the fruits were ripen. The value of a of rind of C. $natsudaidai{\;}H_{AYATA}$ and C. grandis until the end of November was negative. This means that their color was not presented by November since the chlorophyll was in the rind, unlike the colors of the rind of C. unshiu, C. sudachi and C. platymamma which were completed by that time.

  • Chufa (Cyperus esculentus L.) belongs to one of the sedge family and pows well in summer. The aboveground part of chufa is mostly consisted of leaves and the underground part is mostly composed of a clump of fibrous root with tuber. At the seeding year, it does not reproductive development but produces a lot of tuber. It produced many tillers from the tuber and grows in clumps as a bunch type. The plant height of mature chufa was 73 to 75cm and it grown fully in the middle of July. The number of tillers were increased rapidly until the end of July and still increased slowly after August but it showed very poor growth. The final fresh weight and dry matter yield of aboveground part of chufa were 40.3 tou/ha and 12.1 tou/ha. respectively. The regrowth of aboveground part was vigorous in the early stage of growth after 1st cutting but it was decreased rapidly after the second cutting. In control plot, the number of tubers per a clump were 722 at final stage and their fresh and drymatter yields per m: were 4.2kg and 1.9kg, respectively. In experimental plots, the amount of tubers was decreased steadily according to delay of cutting date, but late cutting date was not affect the tuber formation severely because the tuber produced already early in August. The nutritive value of chufa in vegetative growth stage was good but it was decreased according to growing up. The contents of crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), dry matter digestibility (DMD) and total digestible nutrients(TDN) of aboveground part of chufa harvested finally were 6.1%, 51.5%, 39.8%, 33.2% and 39.4%, respectively. The contents of crude protein(CP), neutral detergent fiber(NDF), dry matter digestibility(DMD) and total digestible nutrients(TDN) of tubers of chufa were 6.1%, 81.5%, 39.8%, 33.2% and 39.4%, respectively and the content of oil was as high as 16.2%, especially.

  • Soybean (Glycine max L. (Merr) is commonly consumed and found in major foods including soymilk, soy sauce, tofu, and soy sprout in Korea and east Asia. In addition, it is common to cook the whole seeds with rice. Soybean is known to have ranges of health benefits including antiaging, anticancer, neuroprotective and antidiabetic taken either as supplement or dietary food. Anthocyanins and flavonoids in G. max are found to be the main contributors to such wide arrays of health benefits. Due to increasing economic values of soybean, development of specialty soybean cultivars is becoming an area of interest worldwide. In this study, 746 black soybean accessions from National Agrobiodiversity Center were characterized as part of an attempt to identify important germplasms of G. max. Seed coats of each accession were analyzed for their total anthocyanin, cyanidin 3-O-Glucoside (C-3-O-G), delphinidin 3-O-glucoside (D-3-O-G), petunidin-3-O-glucoside (Pt-3-O-G), and their whole seeds for crude protein contents. HPLC was used to determine and quantify the anthocyanin compositions while crude protein was determined using Kjeldahl method by Kjeltec auto-analyzer (Kjeltec 8400, Foss, Sweden). Accessions were grouped according to their anthocyanins and protein contents; the mean content of which were correlated to agronomic traits including maturity date, one hundred seed weight, cotyledon color and seed lust color. The results indicated that the total anthocyanin content (TAC) ranged from 273.77 to 6250.52 mg/100 g, with mean value of 1853.03 mg/100 g while the crude protein content (CPC) being between 33.43 and 47.51%, with mean value of 40.81%. The highest number of accessions (45.97%) showed TAC between 1000~1900 mg/100 g while 30.96% of accessions showed CPC between 41~43%. Among the 746 accessions considered, 11 (IT142935, 175818, 175855, 177191, 177209, 177211, 177214, 177216, 177218, 177220, 177274) of them showed TAC above 4000 mg/100 g. C-3-O-G was found to be the major contributor to TAC showing strong correlation. Accessions with green cotyledon color showed high mean TAC compared to those having yellow cotyledon color, and accessions with dull seed lust color showed high mean TAC than those having shiny seed lust color. One hundred seeds weight and maturity date showed positive correlation with all anthocyanin contents, except for Pt-3-O-G in the latter case. The overall result of the present study could be used as background for developing new black soybean cultivars and breeds with high anthocyanin and protein contents. The result depicted that many of the accessions could be used as potential parental lines.

  • The objective of experiment was to investigate the effects of seeding rate on forage yield and feed value, and to clarify the optimum seeding rate of rye in middle west area when cultured in paddy field. The field experiment treated with 5 levels of seeding rate was carried out at Yesan area in 1989. The plant height and the number of tillers per m' were increased but the dry matter rate was decreased as seeding rate increased. The fresh and dry weights of rye plant were increased as seeding rate increased. The highest yield was obtained from the harvest of May 15 and 25 in Yesan area. The TDN content and RFV were decreased by the increased seeding rate and delayed cutting date. The highest TDN yield was obtained from the seeding rate of 18kg/l0a and the next highest yield was obtained from the 23kg and 28kg/l0a seeding rate. The content of ENE, NEL, NEM, and NEG was decreased by the increased seeding rate and delayed cutting date. The highest ENE and NEL yields were obtained from the seeding rate of 23kg/l0a and May 15 harvest. The highest NEM and NEG yields were obtained from the seeding rates of 18kg/l0a and May 15 harvest, and of 18-28kg/l0a and May 5 harvest, respectively.

  • Dry matter yield and ear percent are commonly considered the most important factors for evaluating silage corn(Zea mays L.) hybrids for silage production. But quality of stover as well as forage production in important in identification of hybrids. The objective of this study was to evaluate nutritional value of stover, ear and whole plant from eight corn hybrids for silage at two dates of planting. In content of fiber components(ADF, NDF, ADL, hemicellulose and cellulose) from stover, ear and whole plant samples, optimum planting corn was lower than late planting one(P<0.01). Differences(P<0.01) in the content of fiber components in stover and whole plant were observed among the corn hybrids. Differences between different planting dates in TDN and $NE_1$ were detected in the stover and whole plant samples(P<0.05). Differences among the corn hybrids in TDN and $NE_1$ were also observed in stover, ear and whole plant samples. TDN and $NE_1$ of 'G4624', 'P3352' and 'P3394' for whole plant were higher than those of the other corn hybrids. ln vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD) at optimum planting date was higher than that of late(P<0.05), and there also were significant differences among the corn hybrids. Correlation coefficients for whole plant IVDMD with NDF, ADF, hemicellulose, and cellulose were $-0.82^{**}$, $-0.71^{**}$, $-0.63^{**}$, and $-0.69^{**}$, respectively. Results of this study indicate that optimum planting of corn resulted in increased quality of silage corn. Differences among corn hybrid, particularly, in nutritive value of stover and whole plant were also observed. Therefore, the nutritional value of stover and whole plant may be important in assessing the corn hybrids for silage.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the quality characteristics of ripe fruit based on harvest date and to examine the ripening phase of 'Seolhyang' strawberry suitable for room temperature, cold-chain, and low temperature distribution. The strawberries were harvested six times between December 20 to May 9. The appropriate maturity of strawberries is characterized by the firmness of approximately 2.9-3.0 N, and SSC remained above 8.6 °Brix until March and declined after April. The quality index values that determine the maturity stage of strawberries should be red color, Hunter a value ranging from 32 to 37, and hue angle of 36-45℃. For the after-ripening experiment, the progression rate of the ripening stage determined based on strawberry color was 10%/day at room temperature, 5%/day at 10-12℃, and 3%/day at 5℃. Thus, strawberries should be harvested at 80% coloring stage for distribution at room temperature and at least 90% for low temperature storage to maintain the merchantability. Besides, strawberries harvested at 70% coloring stage at room temperature and strawberries harvested below 80% coloring stage at low temperatures below 5℃ had lost commercial value before reaching 100% coloring stage.

  • 'Niitaka' (Pyrus pyriforia) has been the major cultivar of the Asian pear since the 1970s, and yielded about 70% of pear production in South Korea in 2002. When Chuseok (Korean Thanksgiving Day) is earlier than the fruit maturation period, farmers seek to advance the harvesting date to keep pace with the increase in consumer demand caused by the holiday. However, unripened fruit is of suboptimal marketable value because the flesh has a low soluble solid content, the fruit color is not attractive, and stone volume is high. Compost treatment can enhance soil microbial activity and affect soil chemistry, which may accelerate fruit maturation and allow an earlier harvesting date. Therefore, we examined the effect of 2 years of compost application on the fruit quality of Asian pear trees grown under conventional management conditions. The Hunter "L" and "a" values were higher in compost-treated fruit, which also showed greater sweetness and lower acidity than did conventional fruit. The stone volume was reduced and fruit calcium concentration was increased by compost treatment. Therefore, compost treatment may advance fruit harvesting owing to the increased marketability afforded by attractive skin color, sweetness, and reduced stone volume.

  • This study was conducted to determine the effects of seeding date on agronomic characteristics, productivity and feed value of Italian ryegrass, barley and rye during cropping after rice in Suwon, middle region of Korea, during 2004 and 2005. In general, early seeding (26 September) showed longer plant length and branch numbers per square meter than late sowing (11 October). Italian ryegrass had more early seeding effect than barley and rye. The yield of each plant was affected by sowing date in all experiments: the earlier seeding had higher yields than late seeding. In case of Italian ryegrass and barley as late-heading varieties showed more early seeding effect than rye. On the other hand, feed value tended to respond differently to yields. The feed value of each plant were based on liquid swine manure (12%) > composted cattle manure (7%) > composted swine manure (2%). The present results highlight the earlier planting obtained higher yield compared to those planted conventionally.

  • H.264 SVC(Scalable Video Coding) provides the advantages of low disk storage requirement and high scalability. However, a streaming server or a user terminal has to extract a bit stream from SVC file. This paper proposes a bit stream extraction method which can get the maximum PSNR value while date bit rate does not exceed the available network bandwidth. To do this, this paper obtains the information about extraction points which can get the maximum PSNR value offline and decides the spatial/temporal resolution of a bit stream at run-time. This resolution information along with available network bandwidth is used as the parameters to a bit stream extractor. Through experiment with JSVM reference software, we proved that proposed bit stream extraction method can get a higher PSNR value.

  • Due to climate change and its consequential spring temperature rise, flowering time of Robinia pseudoacacia has advanced and a simultaneous blooming phenomenon occurred in different regions in South Korea. These changes in flowering time became a major crisis in the domestic beekeeping industry and the demand for accurate prediction of flowering time for R. pseudoacacia is increasing. In this study, we developed and compared performance of four different models predicting flowering time of R. pseudoacacia for the entire country: a Single Model for the country (SM), Modified Single Model (MSM) using correction factors derived from SM, Group Model (GM) estimating parameters for each region, and Local Model (LM) estimating parameters for each site. To achieve this goal, the bloom date data observed at 26 points across the country for the past 12 years (2006-2017) and daily temperature data were used. As a result, bloom dates for the north central region, where spring temperature increase was more than two-fold higher than southern regions, have advanced and the differences compared with the southwest region decreased by 0.7098 days per year (p-value=0.0417). Model comparisons showed MSM and LM performed better than the other models, as shown by 24% and 15% lower RMSE than SM, respectively. Furthermore, validation with 16 additional sites for 4 years revealed co-krigging of LM showed better performance than expansion of MSM for the entire nation (RMSE: p-value=0.0118, Bias: p-value=0.0471). This study improved predictions of bloom dates for R. pseudoacacia and proposed methods for reliable expansion to the entire nation.
